Have a Wonderful Summer!

We want to wish everyone a wonderful and restful summer.  All too soon we'll be back and starting a new journey together in a new building.  We anticipate a bit of stress while students, parents and staff are learning how to navigate a much larger facility, but we're looking forward to the journey and working together as we always have over the years.  Take a moment this week to enjoy walking through the halls of this wonderful place we've all come to love so much over the years.   Take care, have fun and we'll see you soon!  John, Cindy, Judy, Nova and Jenny
Thank You For Your Help With Packing!

On behalf of all our staff, we want to say thank you to so many parents, students and former students for all the help the last two weekends during our packing parties!   We'd like to especially say thank you to Susie Bunker - she has worked tirelessly over the last two years helping us work with the district, architects and helping coordinate the move.  The move is overwhelming to all of us and Susie has helped keep us all on an even keel.  Thank you to all of you who have helped us as we try to manage packing with the end of year activities, progress reports, camp and all the things we do each year.  We appreciate your help more than you know.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Summer Reading!
by Virginia Allemann - vaallemann@seattleschools.org

Look for summer reading suggestions lists to come home before the last day of school! The NE area teacher-librarians have compiled a great list of ideas for your child's summer reading pleasure! Also, on June 22, Erica Delavan from NE Branch Seattle Public Library will come to talk to our students about the Summer of Learning at SPL.

Happy reading!

From Your School Counselor
by Kristina Miller - klmiller1@seattleschools.org

Happy End of the School Year! I have enjoyed working with your children this year for individual support, in problem solving, in small groups and with their whole classes. I also met with many of you to discuss resources, advocacy, your child's social dynamics, mood or coping skills-among other topics. I saw many of you at Student Support Team meetings and to create support plans for your students, including 504 plans.

I have continued to use Social Thinking curricula (Socialthinking.com) in many of my weekly lessons with kindergarten and first grade students, as well as several other classrooms in second and third grades and in some small groups. You may have heard your student(s) talking about Superflex, the Social Detective or the UnThinkables / Thinkables - all characters in explaining social thinking to children from the curricula. Language you hear throughout the building like "expected/unexpected behavior" (instead of right/wrong), "size of the problem," "whole body listening" have their basis in or are reinforced in these curricula.

I wish you all a restful and enjoyable summer. Please let me know if you need any resource ideas before the end of the year.

Thanks again for your trust and partnership.

Bike News: Awards
by Amanda Thornwell - thornewell@hotmail.com

Thornton Creek school won the Golden Pedal award for having the most minutes out of the 51 elementary schools that registered for the 2016 Cascade May biking month (71,365, up 45% from last year). There's no trophy or award ceremony for the Golden Pedal award this year, but there are plenty of other prizes to be distributed.

Class awards: Pizza parties were awarded to rooms 2, 9, 14, P3, P4, P6, and P8. The village had its celebration on Thursday June 16. Room 14 will celebrate on Monday June 20, and room 2 and 9 will be on Wednesday June 22.

Individual awards: Each rider gets a spoke card, with riders with over 360 minutes getting 2 spoke cards. Most spoke cards have already been distributed. Please check your child's backpack for a laminated reflective card and help them put them on their wheels. Spoke cards for rooms 2, 4, 8, 9, 14, P1, and P2 are still being distributed.

Health and Fitness award: This year Sue has decided that the Health and Fitness award will go to the top 25 riders of the May Biking Challenge. Each rider will receive 4 tickets to a Seattle Storm home game (choice of games from June 30-Sept 11).
Congratulations to all the winners!

Thank you: Many thanks to Sue and the Seattle Storms for providing the Health and Fitness award. Thanks to Cascade Bicycle Club for organizing the May Bike Challenge. Thanks also go to the Safe Routes to School grant and to JRA Bike Shop. Thank you to all the teachers and parents for your support.

Volunteers are needed to help run the biking program next year. Funds are available.   Contact Amanda for more info. This wraps up our biking seasons. See you in the fall.  Keep on riding!
