June 11  Thornton Creek Packing Day
Thank you in advance to all the parents who will volunteer their time on Saturday, June 11 to help staff with packing up our school. Lots of hands will make the work lighter for sure!

New School Start and End Time
Remember that Thornton Creek's start and end time will change next fall. The school day will begin at 8:00 am and end at 2:05 pm.

Graduation Ceremony
Thornton Creek will celebrate students moving onto a new school and our graduating 5th grade classes moving on to middle school on June 23rd at 9:50 in our school lunch room. We decided to celebrate on the original last day of the school year in case families had already made travel plans. Come join us on the 23rd and the classroom celebrations to follow.

Access Online Resources at Home
by Virginia Allemann - vaallemann@seattleschools.org

Seattle Public Schools online resources  (including TumbleBooks and PebbleGo) are available from home! Just go here and click the "Reach for the Stars" icon at the top right under "Public Resources." The username is studentsps and password is access for out-of-school use.

Kindergarteners and 1st graders were accessing TumbleBooks this week and may need your assistance getting there from home devices.
Summer Reading!
Look for summer reading suggestions lists to come home before the last day of school! The NE area teacher-librarians have compiled a great list of ideas for your child's summer reading pleasure! Also, on June 22, Erica Delavan from NE Branch Seattle Public Library will come to talk to our students about the Summer of Learning at SPL.

Happy reading!
Ginny
Book Fair Results!
Our book fair was a great success, thanks to all our great volunteers, patrons, and especially Kaori Tanaka and Cara Neumann. The fair raised almost $1200 for our library! First purchase will be paperback copies of literature group sets for Expeditions, and extra copies of the 2017 Soda Float books. Yippee for a well-funded library!

Town Hall Meeting - June 14th
by Stacy Earleywine -stacy.earlywine@gmail.com

All School Town Hall:  We Will Carry the Torch - Next Door!

When:  Tuesday, June 14 at 7pm
Where:  Thornton Creek Cafeteria

Please join us for an All-School Town Hall in place of the June Site Council Meeting. This will be a chance for us to come together as a community and reflect on what is precious to us about our school as we prepare to move and begin to grow into our new space.  Thornton Creek Elementary School has very deep roots.  Those roots make us strong and allow us to grow and change without losing touch with who we are.  We are the next generation to Carry the Torch!

We will break into small groups led by parent/ teacher teams focused on each of the following topics:

1  Staffing
2  Physical Location
3  Traditions
4  District Relations
5  Parent Relations
6  ELOB and Curriculum

We will ask ourselves " What are the risks our program faces in regard to ___________?  What are some opportunities to further strengthen our program in this area"?  Finally, "what are the key ideas our group would like to highlight for a future Site Council Culture and Community committee"?

Everyone will be able to share concerns, explore opportunities, and brainstorm future steps toward making the future of our school both bigger AND brighter.

Hope to see you there!

Time Capsule!
by Stacy Earleywine -stacy.earlywine@gmail.com

Greetings, Thornton Creek!

As part of our Culture and Community Exploration, our students have been meeting monthly for a Culture Assembly.  This month's focus was on the creation of a time capsule.  Students and teachers will be writing or drawing about:

 1. A memory from this 'old' building or playground and...

 2. A wish for the future.

We'd like to invite parents and families to participate as well.  Do you have year books or photos or newspaper clippings or other TC memorabilia that we should put in the time capsule? Items must be small - (to fit inside a tackle or tool box).

Submissions are due by June 20th.  Please place them in LaChrista's (P2, Lighthouse) mailbox in the office.

Thank you!

Have you signed up to help pack?
by Susie Bunker -
susie.bunker@comcast.net

It is time to come together and get packed for the big move.  It is going to take many hands to get us ready to move to the new building.  Here is how you can help.

Come to one or both packing days

Saturday, June 11 from 9AM-Noon
Teachers in Rooms 1,3,4,8 and 11 will be packing their rooms.  Please watch out for a sign up from your room parent.

If your classroom isn't packing that day, come help pack the Art and Book Rooms.  You can sign up for a shift here

Please note, this is a parent (and grades 7+ volunteers) only event.

Saturday, June 18 from 9:00 AM-3:00 PM
Teachers in rooms 1,3,4,9,11,14, 17 and P1 (Lisa's portable) will be on site packing.  Please watch out for a sign up from your room parent.

If your classroom isn't packing that day (or your room has lots of volunteers), please come help pack the Gym, Kristina's portable, and Room 6. You can sign up for a shift here.

We will provide playground supervision this day, but you must sign up here so we know how many high school babysitters to have on hand.  Please note, that elementary kids will not be assisting in the packing of classrooms unless your teacher informs you otherwise.  Please sign up here if you would like to have your child supervised on the playground.

Some important notes
  • Teachers are so busy right now and may not have had a chance to choose a packing day.  Even if your classroom isn't listed above, please keep an eye out for word from your room parent.
  • While the district is assisting with the packing of the portables, your teachers still may want some assistance sorting and planning.  Also keep an eye out for word from them.
If you know of any Thornton Creek alumni (entering grade 7 and higher) that would like to help with this project, please have them contact me (susie.bunker@comcast.net).  This is a great opportunity service hours.

Thanks to everyone for supporting our community in this big endeavor.

Fish Adoption
by Bodhi Earlywine

Hello, my name is Bodhi Earlywine and I am working on a community service project with Brennan Voss to save the goldfish in our pond.  We are doing this because we do not know what will happen to the fish and pond once the new school is finished.

The fish adoption will be held on June 21st after school.  Fish are first come, first served.  We think there are about 20 fish left.  Please email Bodhi and Brennan at stacylynn12@yahoo.com if you would like to adopt a fish. Or, see Bodhi or Brennan at school... we have a sign up sheet.

The requirements are:  a ten gallon or more tank (any 10 gallon container will do), a filter and the ability to care for the fish.  The goldfish can go with white cloud fish but not with other tropical fish.  Please bring a container on the day of the adoption.  We will contact you before adoption day.

Thank you!
Bodhi and Brennan
