Interviewing
Staff and parents have been very busy interviewing applicants for our open positions.  I am very pleased to let you all know that Thornton Creek has hired a new kindergarten teacher who as the unanimous recommendation of our interview committee.  We will be continuing our interviews during May and look forward to hiring more outstanding new staff.

New building
Work continues on the new building.  We will soon be able to take staff on a tour inside the building.  Everyone looks forward to getting an inside look at the new spaces.  The contractors are still anticipating substantial completion by the end of July.  Once completed, SPS will schedule a thorough cleaning, moving new furniture into the building, and installation of technology during the first two weeks of August.  Staff is tentatively scheduled to work on room set up in their new classrooms the third week of August.  Please stay connected for ways to help with the move.

A gigantic THANK YOU to Kaori Tanaka and Cara Neumann and their team of volunteers who made the Secret Garden Book Fair such a grand success. Our library relies on funds from parent group fundraisers to keep our collection robust and current. Thank you to everyone who came in and browsed or bought a book. My favorite day of the whole year is Dress as a Book Character Day. I hope you and your children had fun with that event!

Scrip Donations
by Kristina Miller - klmiller1@seattleschools.org

Hello Generous TC Families,

Thank you so much for what you have already given the school with your time, auction contributions, and other donations.  If any of you would like an opportunity for further giving, the scrip team, in conjunction with me, your school counselor Kristina Miller, is setting up a Helping Hands program to offer financial assistance to families in need. If you are willing and able to purchase an extra gift card to a grocery store (minimum donation of $25), then Kristina will distribute these cards to help Thornton Creek families who are on a tight budget. Please stop by the scrip table and let the scrip seller know that you'd like to make a donation. Alternatively, you can contact Leslie Cary (scrip@thorntoncreek.org) or myself (klmiller1@seattleschools.org) to make arrangements, if you're not able to stop at the scrip table.

Thanks!
Kristina

Bikey News
by Amanda Thornewell - thornewell@hotmail.com

Thornton Creek's May Bike Everywhere Challenge is in its final stretch. Most data from May 1-20 have been processed. Not all the data are in but so far over 26,000 minutes have been logged.

The rules for the contest have been amended so that any class with 6000+ minutes OR 20+ riders can win a pizza party. It looks like P6-Treehouse is getting very close to winning their pizza party. With 17 riders from their class size of 20,  P6-Treehouse  just needs 800+ minutes to win their pizza party. P4-cottage is another contender, needing 2200+ minutes or 6 more riders to win their pizza party. Hurray for the Kindergarten class room 2, which only needs another 5 riders to win a pizza party for their class.

Don't forget to log the biking activities. Each rider gets a prize, a spoke card.   Riders with more than 360 minutes get 2 spoke cards. Cycling can be done ANYWHERE, not just to school. Please log all cycling activities to help your class win their pizza party, there's still time. Logging can be done online at https://goo.gl/h7HgR1  (or at http://www.askmeqr.com/s/7ddf54 for mobile devices).

If your kid rode their bike to school on the national Bike-to-School Day on May 4, don't forget to log in their time. There are still about 20 kids who haven't logged their time for that day.
