New Parent Tours
The last of our new parent tours ended last week. First of all I want to thank Emily Wong and Jennifer McDowell for organizing the tours again this year.  They did a fabulous job organizing printed materials for new parents, training parent docents, and scheduling building tours.  The total numbers of parents interested in assignment at Thornton Creek continues to amaze me.  I'm certain the interest in our program remains high because of the outstanding staff at Thornton Creek. It was a pleasure to meet with parents again this year to be reminded what an valuable resource Thornton Creek is in Seattle Public Schools.

SPS Budget
Parents, staff and I will be working on next year's District budget during March. I will write an update on key information for the newsletter each week. With the District budget just released, the most notable information is our addition of a fourth Kindergarten and First grade, as well as the addition of a special education pre-K program. Stay tuned for more detail.

SPS Fall Enrollment closes March 1st - be sure your children's younger kindergarten aged siblings are enrolled!
If you have a TC student with a sibling who will be enrolling in SPS and hope to have them enrolled at Thornton Creek next fall, March 1st is your last day to enroll them with the district and choose TC for fall placement with the Elementary Choice Form. Please be sure to check the district enrollment web site and enroll your new kindergartener following the district process!  Every year we have at least one family who misses the deadline and loses the experience of having their child start kindergarten at their older child's school.
Safety Issue, Parents and friends of Thornton Creek
by Jennifer Evans  - jevans@seattleschools.org

Please be sure to close and latch all gates as you enter or leave school property each time you visit.  As you can imagine, with so many people coming and going all the time we could employ at least 3 full time gate keepers! A small amount of help will go a long way in keeping your school staff sane and comfort to any parent with a child that might wander out to know that we are all invested in keeping all students safe!  Thank you!

Thursday March 3, the Book Thieves Global Reading Challenge team will take the bus downtown to the Central Library to represent Thornton Creek in the regional finals of the Global Reading Challenge! All the teams worked very hard from November to February to prepare. The nail-biter in-school challenge on February 11 ended with extra-tricky questions (to break a tie) from Erica Delavan, SPL NE Branch Youth Services Librarian. All students who participated in the Global Reading Challenge will celebrate with a cookie party on Friday, March 11. Many parents helped make the challenge a fun learning process-- thank you! And thank you to Alan Chitlik for taking video of the event that we hope to share at the party on the 11th. 4th and 5th graders can participate in this event next year!

Share Your Thoughts & March Meeting
by Stacy Earlywine- stacy.earlywine@gmail.com

TC families,

Recently your child should have brought home some paper chain links ("What makes our school special"... and "The magic at TC is...")  We are collecting information and we really need your input.  If you have not returned these, please take a moment to share your thoughts and send them back to school with your child.  This is an assignment for you!  NOT for your child.  They have already given their input at school.  Your words and the unique way you articulate your thoughts are truly valuable to our process.  Please send these in!  Alternately, you may email me directly with your responses. Thank you.

Site Council March meeting coming up:  March 8th at 7pm in the school library. Room parents, please make sure your classroom has a room rep.

Thank you and happy almost spring!
