WELCOME BACK!!!

From the Principal
Welcome Back to School!
Thornton Creek Principal

Thornton Creek families, welcome to the new school year! Staff is tremendously excited that the schoolyear has begun and they look forward to working with your children.

Please make arrangements to be at school for our annual back to school night on September 24th. We will briefly meet together at 6:45pm in the lunchroom. Classroom meetings will follow from 7:00-8:00 in your child's classroom.

Community Meeting on SPS Enrollment Process and Possible NE Growth Boundary Changes
Thornton Creek is hosting a regional community meeting on October 1st beginning at 6:00PM. Flip Herndon of SPS will be sharing information about 2016-17 enrollment and possible growth boundaries changes in the Northeast region of the District.

SPS Calendar
The early release day scheduled for September 23rd is still scheduled. Students will get bus transportation or be picked up from school at 1:40.
The SPS 2015-16 calendar has changed October 9th from a teacher, professional development non-student day to a regular school day. Students will be in school on October 9th.

School Start Time - Proposed Changes for 2016-17 the School Year
SPS has proposed recommendations to the Superintendent for a change in the start of school times for the 2016-17 school year. The recommendations are the result of a Bell Times Analysis Task Force research and discussion, information provided by the district, lessons learned from other school districts, and feedback from families in community meetings and surveys.

The Task Force will have additional community meetings to gather more input for the Superintendent before making the recommendation to the School Board in September or early October 2015. Here is the schedule of the next round of community meetings:
  • Sep. 29 - Chief Stealth International High School 6:30 pm
  • Sep. 30 - Ingraham High School 6:30 pm
  • Oct. 1 - Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary 6:30 pm
  • Oct. 2 - Washington Middle School 6:30 pm
Moving into the new school building
Although the school year has just begun, it is not too early to begin thinking about how to help support our program with the transition into the new building next July/August. Please consider joining us for Site Council meetings the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00. We will be working together to explore Thornton Creek's mission and vision as well as many of our foundational philosophical documents and update them if needed. Your voice in this work will help guide the community into our next five years. Please consider joining us and being part of this important transition work.

School-based Tutoring Program at Thornton Creek
The Thornton Creek Site Council has discussed concerns with our school-based tutoring program as it has been offered over the last few years. While a service to students and parents, many competing priorities have arisen for uses of Site Council funds. The program has been designed as a 50/50 shared cost between Site Council and parents of tutoring students. This shared arrangement for tutoring has not been working.

The primary problem with the 50/50 shared cost of tutoring has been the non-payment of the family share of tutoring costs by many families with children receiving tutoring. Despite repeated requests for payment, parent payment of the family share of tutoring has been unsuccessful.

It became clear in discussion that the Site Council was unwilling to take on the role of bill collector. During the past few years, there have also been increasing requests for Site Council funding assistance.

Based on the funding problems that have been experienced with our school-based tutoring, the Site Council decided that it would no longer commit parent Site Council funds to pay for tutoring.

Parents wishing to continue tutoring support for their child will need to communicate with tutors and pursue tutoring independently from the Site Council.
From the Office
Updates from the Thornton Creek Office
by Jenny Evans - jevans@seattleschools.org

Welcome back!
The first day went well and TC staff appreciate all your support during the strike.  Teachers across the district have been in awe of all the support from our school communities, neighbors and the city!  We are excited to be back to the work we love.  You have no idea how much your efforts helped!

This year, your school office is doing its best to run more efficiently. There are a couple changes below that we want you to know about:

Early Release 9/23 (Wednesday)!
We will have early release this Wednesday the 23rd. October 9th is now a regular school day with students present. Stay tuned for further updates about make up days.

First Day Packet
Parents, please fill out your first day packets and return them before the end of September. Volunteer paperwork must be processed before volunteers are allowed to volunteer and we cannot process paperwork at the last minute. Last year paper work was still being returned in June, just before some of our children went to camp. Please help us achieve our 100% return goal. (We had 100% return rate the previous 8 years!) The information you turn in is used in emergencies and a variety of other ways daily, late returns keep us guessing all year long.

Field trip paperwork MUST be returned well ahead of time or students will not be allowed to attend field trips, neither teachers nor office staff can process paperwork at the last minute.

Our Permissions Form Has Changed - Now only one permission for everything!
In years past, Thornton Creek used several different permissions for various activities at Thornton Creek, including the yearbook, the directory, class photo use, room lists, art displays, etc. Last year we were informed that our permissions process has to conform with district policy, and we must only use the FERPA form for all permissions. The FERPA form is one simple yes/no for all permissions (everything) non HIPAA related.  It no longer applies to our family directory, parents must sign up for that via the parent group individually on line.

Therefore, for the 2015-school year, Thornton Creek will only use the FERPA form to grant permissions to use student information for the general uses outlined above. This is a required form; parents must indicate yes or no and return the form to school. This is a major change from our past practice. Should you choose to check NO on the FERPA form, we cannot post your child's photo or name in the school yearbook, the directory, school photos, year-end video. We apologize for the abrupt change.

Please be sure to return your completed FERPA form, found in your child's first day packet by October 1st. If the form is not returned, SPS considers the lack of response as consent.

Clothes
As most of you know, we are a school that goes out when it rains. Children of all ages need a change of clothes from time to time so be sure to keep a spare in your child's locker, cubby or back pack. We will not be able to help more than a couple students on any given day with extra clothing so be sure to help keep your child comfortable at school all year long.

Advanced Learning Application are an online item this year! October 8th deadline.
Instructions are on the Seattle Public School Website.  Go to: http://www.seattleschools.org/

Site Council President

Welcome Thornton Creek Families!

With just 2 school days under our belt, it has already been quite the year!

As I embark on this new adventure with all of you, I would like to pause and thank our outgoing Site Council Chair, Tim Fonken. He spent 3 full years at the helm and I am thankful for his dedication to our school.

I would also like to thank our community for the outpouring of support for our teachers during the strike. It is my belief that the positive effects of coming together in support of a common goal far outweigh any inconveniences we experienced.

I invite you all to harness this energy and let it grow. We have a big year ahead of us with many changes and much growth. It will literally take a village if we are to hold on to the many facets that make Thornton Creek such a special place. Together, we can make it better than ever.

As I dive into the Site Council Chair role, I suspect it will take me a bit of time to get up to speed. I appreciate your patience during this time and I invite your thoughts and feedback at any time. My first priority is to establish clear and effective lines of communication with our families. To that end our weekly newsletter will continue to provide you with up to date information. We are in the process of revamping our school website so be on the lookout for changes there. And lastly, we've established a new Facebook page to serve as yet another avenue for disseminating information. You can subscribe here

I look forward to seeing you at the next Site Council meeting (Oct 13th @ 7pm) or in the halls at school.

Warmly,
Stacy Mercier Earlywine, Site Council Chair

Updates from the Library
by Ginny Allemann - vaallemann@seattleschools.org

I'll be setting up borrowing privileges for parents, providing a brief tour of our collection, and informing you about volunteer opportunities! Please RSVP to vaallemann@seattleschools.org. Hope to see you!

Spencer Shaw Leccture at UW iSchool.
This year's Spencer Shaw lecturer will be Kadir Nelson (We are the Ship, Henry's Freedom Box, I Have a Dream, among others)! The event is Thursday, October 22 at Kane Hall. Hope to see you there!

Thank you library volunteers!
I have super volunteers in the library. The helpers collect the book carts from classrooms, check in the books, and shelve them. I could still use a couple of helpers on Friday morning, and one more on Wednesday morning. I am also searching for a couple of people who could come in every couple of weeks (preferably on Tuesday afternoons, but any day after school is fine) to wash tables and dust computers and shelf tops. Please let me know if you are interested or if you'd like to be on the "on call" volunteer list for simple projects.

Thornton Creek Families, the Student/Family Directory is Back!
by Amanda Thornewell - thornewell@hotmail.com

We are gathering data to create classroom lists and contact information for family-to-family communication. (Seattle School District does not provide student/family contact information to other students and their families).

This info will be given to teachers for assembling classroom family contact information, and an electronic school directory will be created for Thornton Creek family use only. There is an option within the form to have information only sent to the teacher, and not given to the directory.

Parents of 1st grade to 5th grade, complete this very quick e-form ASAP.

Kindergarten parents, please complete the form after you receive your child's final room assignment.

Please fill out contact info at this link.

For mobile devices such as iphones, smart phones, tablets, use this link.

Thank you.
