July 2015
FROM THE GROUND UP
THE BUILDING MANAGEMENT NEWSLETTER
Community outreach to our Building Managers is one of the five core functions of Zone Management.  An important part of that outreach is to offer training on a variety of topics. We had a good turnout for the Building Manager Roles and Responsibilities class on Wednesday, June 24th, with over 35 Building Managers in attendance. Thank you!

Our next Building Manager class will be on September 8th at 9:30 am Bill Larson, Department of Public Safety (DPS), will present Building Security. Bill will focus on building security and give you theft prevention tips. He will also discuss how DPS can assess your building for building security issues. Save this date, 9/8/15,more details to come.

We asked you for suggestions for other classes and had a few good ideas that we will develop with Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) -
  • Hazardous chemicals management/Tracking chemicals in your building
  • Lab Design Guide
  • Hazardous Waste Management

We are always looking for more topics that can help you in your role as Building Manager. Please send me any class subjects that you would like Zone Management to present. We get our best ideas from you! kb1@stanford.edu

  2nd Annual Building Manager Survey

Building Managers,

I'm pleased to announce that we will be sending out our 2nd Annual Building Manager Survey of Key Performance Indicators (KPI) for building operation and maintenance on July 6th, 2015. Last year we surveyed building managers to identify their Top 10 KPI. We then asked building managers to rate their satisfaction level for each of the Top 10 KPI. We published the results of last year's 2014 Building Manager KPI Survey in our October 2014 Building Management Newsletter.

The overall ratings and comments from last year's survey were very positive. We received many detailed write-in comments citing specific issues and suggestions for improvement. Zone Management reviewed the comments, followed-up with applicable building managers, and partnered with LBRE departments to identify and implement action plans for improvement, such as:
  • Updates to the BGM website
  •  Additional staffing for the LBRE Ops Center, including call center operators and quality assurance inspectors.
  • Piloting of LBRE Operational's District Maintenance Model for the "Science and Engineering" and "Biology and Chemistry" districts.
  • Formation of BGM Facilities Collaborative Teams for Safety, Work Planning, Preventive Maintenance, Contracted Services, Outdoor World, Events Planning, and Building Security
  •  Building Manager Training
  • Zone Management outreach meetings with School facilities and planning groups, LBRE departments, and University service departments

Annual building manager KPI surveys allow us to us to benchmark performance and track improvement over time. Your detailed write-in comments and suggestions help us to better understand your building needs and improve our performance in meeting those needs. Thank you for partnering with us to improve building operation and maintenance services in support of Stanford teaching, research, and business needs.
