WHAT'S UP WITH THE PINK SALE?
January has historically been the month for HoofPrints Customer Appreciation Sale. For new subscribers, the Customer Appreciation Sale consisted of a storewide discount on every product HoofPrints sells. The sale pricing was activated by entering a simple coupon code in the shopping cart. Easy-peasy, right? Well, not really. My dear subscribers (that's you all) would read about the cool stuff I was featuring, click the links and place their orders. WithOUT remembering to put in the code. No matter how BIG, BOLD, BRIGHT COLORED, whatever, my reminders were - most didn't remember to do that part. Because so many of you have taken the time to send me personal comments over the years, I recognize your name(s) when you order. Soooo - with each order that was missing the awesome discount, I'd go back in and manually apply it when I processed the paperwork. However, with the change to the new, improved website (details here) it's a lot trickier to be changing up pricing on orders once they're submitted. So, this year, instead of the storewide discount, I'm giving you my VERY BEST DISCOUNT possible on a whole lot of customer favorites.
No coupon codes to apply - all you have to remember is to order BEFORE February 15. The Pink SALE items are here

AT LAST! A Sequel to Healing Shine -
does NOT disappoint. A sequel to the highly popular Healing Shine - A Spiritual Assignment, The Trials of Joe Ben Black - Confessions of a Rope Horse was intended to be a collection of best practices to start a young roping horse. However, the subject matter turned out to encompass a much larger area.
What is the best way to train our horse? According to Michael Johnson's latest book "The process is far less about training the horse... and far more about training ourselves." Within the pages of Joe Ben Black you will find a collection of best practices to start a young horse... with a twist. A good portion of the book is told from Joe Ben's point of view and from the stars of Healing Shine - the Shine Man and the hilarious Little Blue.
Joe Ben's story begins with Michael by Joe Ben's mother's side the night of his birth, and chronicles the young horse's adventures en route to becoming a skilled roping horse five years later. The book is replete with Michael's honest appraisal of his mistakes along the way - the same ones we all make. An excellent read for the novice and seasoned horseman alike, there's wonderful humor throughout with stories of hope and clear strategies to improve your horsemanship skills.
Consider this excerpt:
So, does the horse come on earth knowing how to be a roping horse? Not exactly. I know however, he comes on the earth hard-wired to help man. Like the spider knows how to spin a web, and geese and hummingbirds know where to fly, the horse is instructed to help man. His purpose is encoded when he arrives. Whaterver task we present to him, he watches, he listens, and he learns. Once he becomes aware of what we want, he will do it for us - whatever the task might be. If we give the horse sufficient time, he will do anything we ask. He will launch himself onto spears of the enemy in battle and die for us. He will run alongside a buffalo for us and he will spin for us so we can shoot our enemies from all directions. He will even help us rope cattle. The key is we have to ask him the right way. If we do that, we learn something extraordinary, something almost unbelievable, and something life-changing. And that is, the horse is a cosmic Swiss Army knife made by something grander than we can imagine. Once that awareness comes, the horse knows we know what he is... and he will respond." This new story is available in paperback here or audio CD here. If you've not read Healing Shine - A Spiritual Assignment, I highly recommend starting with that. More info about Shine's story below.

HEALING SHINE - A Spiritual Assignment
This is still one of my very favorite books. It's a rare candid MAN'S account of struggles with a horse that wouldn't comply with traditional riding and training.
In it Oklahoma Cowboy Michael Johnson shares a great deal of the inner dialogue that he has with himself surrounding his struggle with the "flighty, spooky, special needs, mentally challenged" horse - Shine.
The reader finds himself alternately laughing out loud, and shedding a tear as we realize that Michael's words of frustration and anguish are a lot like our own. Here's an edited excerpt from chapter seven:
"Long solitary conversations in the barn were the norm for me in those days, sometimes with the dog - but mostly with my self. I considered options, weighed angles, and most of all, wrestled with that internal voice we find inside us all; the one when someone else asks about, we deny knowing. "What?" we say. "No, I don't talk to myself; that's what crazy people do." I admit to hearing mine, and also that not only did I hear it in that barn, but we argued constantly. Then, to my surprise, I found someone - or something else - in there. I talked to myself all right, but at some point, somebody else butted in. Something - something more than me - started talking too. And by the way, what is that "thing?" That internal voice we all share our innermost thoughts with, that sparring partner we tell things we tell no other.
Who is that?
Is that our "self" or is it the Spirit? Is that Jesus, and does he know where Idabel Oklahoma is? Is that voice the "Comforter" He promised to send? Be it guardian angel or deceased ancestor looking down on us from above, I have no idea - not a clue.
Not only was the voice interested in Shine, it was the only one - considering the number of friends I had alienated - as interested in the topic as me. Indeed, it seemed to want to talk about Shine more than I did. Not just idle chatter, either - this thing had ideas, suggestions, and thoughts I simply could not have generated on my own. And the voice even claimed to have the answer. And the answer was...
"You do it!"
"Best way is - you do it!"
...whatever had lit on the shoulder of my mind just didn't understand. The reason I was in this fix with this horse was due to my lack of knowledge. So why on earth did the answer keep coming to me that somehow the solution was in me? That was impossible."
...
"You are like all the rest. You pray for great horse. You say, 'Oh, please give me great horse.' Get one, and what do you do? You say, 'Oh, he's crazy, I can't handle him, I need help, send him to someone else.' HEY! Are you listening? We didn't send him to someone else! We sent him to you!"
On the other hand, Michael received plenty of advice from EXTERNAL voices, too.
"Wet saddle blankets are all he needs." "Guarantee you a good ten-mile lope everyday for a week would solve most of your problems." "Hell, just rope on him. All that psychology stuff is messing up your brain. Just rope on him." "Why don't you find a horse that has some sense and will just let you rope and enjoy yourself?"

The Power of the Herd - A Nonpredatory Approach to Social Intelligence, Leadership, and Innovation
Linda Kohanov is beloved for her groundbreaking articulation of "the way of the horse," an experiential wisdom known to riders for centuries but little studied or adapted to off-horse use. Now Kohanov takes those horse-inspired insights on the nonverbal elements of exceptional communication and leadership into the realms of our workplaces and relationships. Here we explore the benefits of "nonpredatory power" in developing assertiveness, fostering creativity, dealing with conflict, and heightening mind-body awareness. In "A Brief History of Power," the first part of this far-reaching book, Kohanov profiles cultural innovators who employed extraordinary nonverbal leadership skills to change history, usually on horseback: Winston Churchill, George Washington, Alexander the Great, and Siddhartha Gautama (the Buddha), among others. She also draws on the behavior of mature horse herds, as well as the herding cultures of Africa and Mongolia, to debunk theories of dominance hierarchies, challenge ingrained notions of "survival of the fittest," and demonstrate the power of a consensual leadership in which governing roles are fluid. Kohanov then adapts these lessons into twelve powerful guiding principles we can all incorporate into our work and personal lives. Eloquent and provocative, this is horse sense for everyone who seeks to thrive in the herds we all run in - our communities, careers, families, and friendships. This hard cover book is a big 452 pages; a fitting sequel to Linda's first two books Tao of Equus and Riding Between The Worlds. To learn more about The Power of the Herd click here

VALENTINE'S DAY GIFT IDEA
Horse Woman's Balm
A great product that DOES WHAT IT'S SUPPOSED TO! The 3 ounce tin doesn't sound like much, but I have been using out of the SAME tin since it arrived here a couple years ago as a prototype. It's made especially for us by the folks at Little Moon Essentials - they make the
This special balm is formulated specifically to be soothing and healing to skin AND pleasant smelling to horses. As it turns out, we think it smells pretty good, too. Laura at Little Moon did considerable research, and even consulted an animal communicator friend as she worked on the formula. The result is a fragrant blend of lavender, sage, cinnamon, and oat extract in an emollient base of cocoa butter, vitamin E and essential oils. This stuff is great for dry skin, ragged cuticles, cracked heels, etc. And the scent stays there long after the balm has been absorbed - withOUT being too strong or overpowering. These are super-high quality ingredients and a little dab goes a long way.
And, like the rest of our products, we test this ourselves (more about R&D here). This particular product was put through it's paces quite a bit this fall. Most people don't think about cardboard being a drying agent to skin. But it is. Anyone who handles boxes all day will testify to that. It strips the oils right out of your hands, scuffs them, scratches them... ever get a paper cut from cardboard? It hurts badly - and is a nightmare to get healed.
So, as I entered January my hands were really feeling challenged after handling so many boxes. Then, the side of beef that we'd spoken for from a local farmer was ready to be picked up at the processing house. We always can a portion of our meat (in quart glass Ball jars) so there's a ready supply of pre-cooked meat on hand for fast meals. It's great for vegetable soup, barbecue, beef manhattan, beef & noodles, etc. Just open the jar and heat. But getting it to that point requires a bit of work. The meat comes in chunks from the butcher unfrozen in big plastic bags. The procedure after that is to stuff the raw meat into clean jars, put on the lids, and pressure cook each batch for the required time. Do you have any idea how many times a person washes their hands in hot, soapy water while processing 80 pounds of meat? Me neither, but it's a LOT. Between the physical effort required to pack the cold meat tightly into the jars, along with being wet/washed/dried over and over - my hands were a mess at the end of the day. All I had to do was slather on some Horse Woman's Balm at bedtime and they were like new in the morning. Whatever is in this stuff is what hands need - that's for sure. The great thing is, too, you can use a little - or a lot. For minor dryness, a little dab makes a thin film that absorbs quickly and doesn't feel greasy. For major dryness like I was having - you can use quite a bit so it continues to "feed" your skin as it soaks in overnight.
So, if the price on this discouraged you from trying it in the past - reconsider giving it a shot now - you won't regret it. I've marked the 3 oz tin size down by 20% (regular price $29.95 - SALE PRICE $23.96) - to order, click here

The Western Horse
- A Photographic Anthology by David Stoecklein
This photographic tribute to the power, mystique, and grace of the equine features Stoecklein's best horse photography collected over years spent on a quest to capture the spirit of the West on film. Artist and horse specialist Buster McLaury gives an extensive history of the Western horse, from its arrival on the shores of North America in the 16th century, to the days when mustangs roamed the country, through the trail-driving period, and on into modern times. Some of the greatest living American horsemen answer questions about breed, color, training, and performance, and other contributors offer poetry and stories that complement the beautiful photographic images. Gina's note: I've worked with David Stoecklein for many years - several of HoofPrints Christmas cards feature his images. I was shocked to learn of his death on November 10 of last year. He was only 65. His sons are carrying forward his photography work, but this book is all David's. A five pound, oversize coffee table book featuring his images of Western Horses is covetable enough... I was caught off guard by the fact that the text is every bit as profound as the photos. There are several pages that mention the story of Ray Hunt and Buck Brannaman: I made a commitment to work on my temper, every day of my life if that is what it took. It was a turning point with the horses, too. The horse is so intimidated by someone who is angry. Some horses are so sensitive that if they find out you have this warlike part of your psyche, you might never get anything accomplished." ~Buck Brannaman Full disclosure: The text also includes some poetry by Sue Wallis, which, honestly isn't that bad. At any rate, the list price for this book is $60.00, it's on sale for HALF PRICE ($29.95) while supplies last here

Fun on the Farm: More about the folks at HoofPrints
For years, the HoofPrints order form included three tiny photos of our old farmhouse in various stages of remodel. I have had so many folks mention that they enjoyed reading about the transformation, that I've decided to blog about it! I married a farrier and unleashed all that repressed horsey art into promotional materials for him, and later, other farriers. The long story is here. In spite of both of us working full time, we were basically poor. Interest rates were in the teens and banks were stingy with loans. We desperately wanted a small farm, but there were none to be had in our price range. Except... an abandoned farmhouse situated on the corner of a remote patch of land owned by a corporation in another state. God had His hand in that one, as door after door swung wide open and this naive, albeit energetic couple purchased and fixed up our "dream" (and I use that term loosely) house in the country. Along the way we acquired a menagerie of animals, loved them, and cried when they left us. This blog is an eclectic compilation of our adventures along the way. You can read the debut entry hereThis week's entry is NOT so much fun of the farm. It tells the story of a gravely injured woodpecker. Sadly, he did not survive, but the story has some interesting twists and the ending is somewhat happy. To read Somebody should DO something!, click here.

ABOUT THE COMPANY AND THIS NEWSLETTERFarriers Greeting Cards was started by Gina Keesling in 1986 (in a very small way) to provide helpful promotional materials for farrier husband Rob. Along the way the company became HoofPrints.com, too, adding a selection of fun horse and dog products geared toward women of a certain age. This newsletter is emailed to subscribers a few times a month, depending on how often I have something to share. Watch for special sales, interesting stories, uplifting quotes and more.

Viral marketing... it sounds bad, doesn't it? You can ask my husband - a frequent topic around here is that of forwarded emails - and the psychology behind them - just WHAT prompts people to decide; "I am going to send this to everyone I know!".
We receive a lot of them. Some are pretty good, and others are dumb. Dumb in a myriad of ways... Alarmist email rumors that have been around forever - that folks keep sending "just in case it's true" Pictures of someone's butt (or worse) - don't even get me started about the firecracker butt - but at least that one was timely when it showed up around July 4. Christian messages that are uplifting - until you get to the end and you're threatened "if you're not ashamed that you love Jesus, forward this - if you are, then delete." Pictures of cute puppies and kittens (awww)
I enjoy writing these newsletters - and sharing all this stuff with you all. But the fact is, it's also a way to help us stay connected with customers and sell products during the time between catalog mailings (which is only once a year) So I really, really like it when someone new stumbles upon the newsletter and is excited to "discover" our company and the products we offer.
In all my efforts to make the newsletter interesting and forward-worthy - it never occurred to me to JUST ASK you all to send it! Duh. Sometimes the obvious is elusive, I guess. So here goes - my request to ask you to forward our email newsletter to your horsey friends. All we ask is that you please be judicious and only send to folks who might be interested. Otherwise we are no better than the "firecracker butt". Click to get started. (please note - using this form does NOT subscribe anyone to our list - it is a one-time only forward)
