ABOUT THE COMPANY AND THIS NEWSLETTERFarriers Greeting Cards was started by Gina Keesling in 1986 (in a very small way) to provide helpful promotional materials for farrier husband Rob. Along the way the company became HoofPrints.com, too, adding a selection of fun horse and dog products geared toward women of a certain age. This newsletter is emailed to subscribers a few times a month, depending on how often I have something to share. Watch for special sales, interesting stories, uplifting quotes and more.

CHRISTMAS GIFT IDEA: The Doctor Is In! All I Pay My Psychiatrist is the Cost of Feed and Hay - he'll listen to me any day! Here is a delightful way to keep track of those ridiculous cold temps we've been experiencing! We found this spiffy metal thermometer - with the perfect horse saying - for only $14.95! It's made of durable, fade resistant tin, measures a big 17" tall, and is suitable for indoor our outdoor use. The thermometer glass is a FULL 6" tall - and the numbers are big enough to read easily.
What a great (and useful) gift idea for a horse-loving friend. And it's inexpensive enough to send "just because".
I have dozens of folks I call my friends - that I've met along my horse challenge journey, who I have never actually met in person. They're part of various internet communities that I frequent, and they've all helped me immensely with their wise words and advice for all manner of equine quandaries. Training, nutrition, tack - you name it - someone in cyberspace has answered my questions about it. In my experience, when used with discernment and further research, this information has proven to be every bit as helpful and valuable as the advice that I have gotten from a myriad of professionals that I have PAID along the way. When one of my internet friends goes out of his or her way to help me - I always wish I had something appropriate that I could send as a thank you gift. This is the PERFECT solution. To order one for yourself or for your friend(s) click here .

BAD NEWS (and GOOD news) about the Long, Tall List: The version pictured in the HoofPrints flyer is sold out. BUT - I came up with a replacement! For a couple years we carried the Long, Tall List pad picturing the bedraggled woman on her bedraggled horse - scanning the list with worried eyes. It was so popular that I brought on board a second pad of similar ilk that features a woman riding, facing backwards: "Some days I don't know if I'm comin' or goin'!" - and bundled the two into a money saving set.
But then, I got the news that the original Long, Tall List pad is sold out at the publisher! So I fabricated this replacement, using artwork by my friend, horsewoman Lesley Bruce. You can see closeups of these diligent women chipping away at their Long, Tall List here.
I think she's captured the feeling that most women experience when they scan their own list of chores! The list is magnetic (so you can stick it on the fridge) measures 9" tall x 4" wide, and has 60 full color sheets for you to keep track of your tasks.
At HoofPrints, we know what it's like to have a long, tall list of things to do. That's why we've assembled this fun group of unique and creative gifts for busy horsewomen. Whether you need to find a thoughtful gift for a horse-loving friend, or a little pick-me-up reward for yourself, we've got you covered. Right down to the long, tall list notepad to keep track of it all. I've placed these, appropriately, in the Useful Stuff category on the all-new website. There are plenty of great Christmas gift ideas - see them all here.

CHRISTMAS GIFT IDEA - Prayer with Horsewoman Medallion:
I had this one rattling around in my head for years
It took a long time to sort out how I wanted to word it - in a way that reflects my hopes and dreams for my interactions with horses these days. It's not about perfecting a certain movement, or winning a ribbon, or beating a time. These days it's more about just getting out there and enjoying the simple things.
A Horsewoman's Prayer is printed on parchment, double matted in a fancy mat with a brass Epona Medallion inset in the corner. The frame is an antique horseshoe pattern and it has a sawtooth hanger on the back for hanging. You can order the framed verse here
Here's what wikipedia says about Epona
"In Gallo-Roman religion, Epona was a protector of horses, donkeys, and mules. She was particularly a goddess of fertility, as shown by her attributes of a patera, cornucopia, ears of grain and the presence of foals in some sculptures suggested that the goddess and her horses were leaders of the soul in the after-life ride, with parallels in Rhiannon of the Mabinogion."
Epona is celebrated in Michigan each year;
"On Mackinac Island, Michigan, Epona is celebrated each June with stable tours, a blessing of the animals and the Epona and Barkus Parade. Mackinac Island, Michigan does not permit any personal automobiles: the primary source of transportation remains the horse, so celebrating Epona has special significance on this island in the Upper Midwest."

CHRISTMAS GIFT IDEA: Shiny Pink Gift Bag
Wrap her gift in something she can use later instead of tossing in the trash!
What woman doesn't want to get out of the house and onto a horse?
This sparkly pink gift bag is sturdy, durable, and UNDER $5.00! It measures a handy 9 "x 4" x 12" (not counting the handles) When I posted a picture of it on HoofPrints Facebook page, a customer immediately chimed in: "I love this bag! It's just the right size for my lunch, or shoes + a big bottle of my favorite flavored water. And, since I carry a giant tote anyway, it takes up no room to have it folded and available when I need it, Plus -- it's pink; what more needs to be said?" ~Jenne
You can see this, and a sweatshirt that matches, along with all our other Horsewoman products here.

CHRISTMAS GIFT IDEA and The Rest of the Story: Dog Collars from a Horse Book:
It's funny how one thing leads to another and things turn out in ways that we never could imagine.
Such is the case with Leslie Guttman. In researching her first nonfiction book, the author/journalist spent a year chronicling the everyday activities at famed Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky. The result of her efforts - Equine ER was a huge success. I think she did an incredible job documenting what she saw. Equine ER is much more than just an account of shocking injuries and illnesses, repaired / cured at the 11th hour by a team of the best equine veterinarians. Leslie adds a degree of observation and insight to the stories that make this book one of my favorites. But while she was watching emergency surgeries, riding along on farm calls, and interviewing vets who'd just been kicked for the umpteenth time, she was noticing something else there in the Bluegrass. The tack. "I had never seen such high-quality leather goods outside of Italy," Guttman says. She arranged to have a dog collar and a purse custom made (in horse tack style) by a Kentucky saddle maker. When strangers kept stopping her, asking where she'd gotten these lovely pieces - because they wanted them, too, Guttman was inspired to start her own leather goods company - daisy1010. The company's first product is equestrian style dog collars. Like the handmade bridles for thoroughbred racehorses, daisy1010's custom dog collars have a brass plate - engraved with your dog's name and a phone number if desired. These are handcrafted in Kentucky using the finest quality leather. Also matching the bridles used on valuable, thin-skinned thoroughbreds, they are padded for comfort, and all surfaces that touch the dog are smooth and soft. They come in two main leather colors (black or brown) and your choice of several different snazzy accent colors. Matching leashes are available, too. "The goal with daisy1010 is to make beautiful things that last," says Guttman.
"That very first dog collar and purse I had made are still going strong after six years. Actually, the older they get, the more beautiful they become. That's the way it should be."
I first ran this story last year. At that time, Leslie was not offering collars for small dogs. I wanted to order one for my Jack Russell Terrier Lucy, so inquired about the smaller size. Leslie and her leatherworker put their heads together, and worked out the details for scaling down these lovely collars. Keeping the elegant look AND managing the materials in such a way that they remained pliable and comfortable for a tiny neck presented a special set of challenges. I sent in my measurements, and a couple weeks later it arrived! I am thrilled with the result. All the details are perfect, and the fit is exact. It's smooth on all the inside edges, and not one bit clunky like thick leather could be on a 12" dog. When I put the new treasure on Lucy, she promptly took it for a test drive in the woodpile. And later, in the pond. I was horrified to see the collar get wet - but then it occurred to me that horses get their tack sweaty all the time and people don't think a thing about it. I dried it off when she emerged from the water and it remained as new. Lucy's worn her collar daily for over a year now, and it's lovelier and softer than ever! Leslie is offering a special discount for HoofPrints newsletter subscribers. Enter FRIENDOFGINA at checkout, and you'll get a $10 discount on each collar that you order! Offer ends December 1 - this is the last day to order for Christmas delivery. The discount also applies to gift cards - so you can reserve a collar as a gift without knowing the size and color preferences. To get started click hereEven if you're not in the market for a new collar for your dog right now, do take a moment to sign up for Leslie's newsletter. Her prototype collar was developed for her own dog, a standard poodle named Daisy. Like all of us, Daisy has issues. And she's teaching Leslie about life through their adventures. They're just getting started, so you can get in at the beginning of the story here.

Viral marketing... it sounds bad, doesn't it? You can ask my husband - a frequent topic around here is that of forwarded emails - and the psychology behind them - just WHAT prompts people to decide; "I am going to send this to everyone I know!".
We receive a lot of them. Some are pretty good, and others are dumb. Dumb in a myriad of ways... Alarmist email rumors that have been around forever - that folks keep sending "just in case it's true" Pictures of someone's butt (or worse) - don't even get me started about the firecracker butt - but at least that one was timely when it showed up around July 4. Christian messages that are uplifting - until you get to the end and you're threatened "if you're not ashamed that you love Jesus, forward this - if you are, then delete." Pictures of cute puppies and kittens (awww)
I enjoy writing these newsletters - and sharing all this stuff with you all. But the fact is, it's also a way to help us stay connected with customers and sell products during the time between catalog mailings (which is only once a year) So I really, really like it when someone new stumbles upon the newsletter and is excited to "discover" our company and the products we offer.
In all my efforts to make the newsletter interesting and forward-worthy - it never occurred to me to JUST ASK you all to send it! Duh. Sometimes the obvious is elusive, I guess. So here goes - my request to ask you to forward our email newsletter to your horsey friends. All we ask is that you please be judicious and only send to folks who might be interested. Otherwise we are no better than the "firecracker butt". Click to get started. (please note - using this form does NOT subscribe anyone to our list - it is a one-time only forward)
