What good does it do, anyway?
When I agreed to work on the Horses & Hope Calendar, I didn't really know...
Photographer Sarah K. Andrew approached me about HoofPrints helping to produce a calendar using her photos of auction and rescue horses. I'd been a fan of Sarah's work for a long time; continually astonished at her ability to take soulful photos of ordinary (and often unkempt/unattractive) unwanted horses in extremely challenging conditions. She chose One Horse At A Time as the recipient for the funds generated by the calendar. One of the reasons - OHAAT writes "gelding grants". This is funding they've set aside for worthy recipients to pay for gelding stallions, in order to make them more adoptable. Shown below is one of those horses. Silver Gem spent the first 8 years of his life as a stallion, on a chain in someone's back yard. Most people wouldn't have given him a second look - an unhandled stud-horse at that age would seem to have limited potential to ever be a "good citizen". Horse Rescue United's Anouk Busch thought differently. She negotiated with his owners to purchase him. OHAAT funded his gelding. Anouk and the staff at HRU worked with Gem, and in spite of his late start at training, he proved to be a quick study. Now he's in a good home, with a good life!
Little successes like this make me think of the Starfish Story (below) - when a problem seems so big and so terrible that it almost isn't worth trying to solve - that's when we all need to think of the individuals... instead of the masses. For Gem, it made all the difference in the world.
We're down to the last couple hundred Horses and Hope Calendars. Most of the folks who bought them, bought one. What can $20. do? Is it even worth the bother? I am here to state a resounding YES! So far we've dispersed over $100,000. in calendar sales proceeds to One Horse At A Time. They've wisely and judiciously distributed it where it's most needed. If you've not ordered your calendar yet, you can do so here If you don't already have them, consider adding back issues to your order, too. They're only $10.00 more and the photos are beautiful - it's a collector's item, for sure.
This whole thing started with Facebook, at least for me. I thought Facebook was just something that bored people used to post selfies or pictures of what they were eating in a restaurant. But the marketing gurus say it's important to have a social media presence, so somewhat against my will I created an account for myself and one for HoofPrints. After I took the plunge and learned more about it, I realized there's a whole lot more there than I thought. So much interesting news that I'd never have encountered otherwise, updates from friends and classmates that I would have never heard from or about for the rest of my life, so many beautiful and amazing images.
This is how I discovered the work of Sarah K Andrew.
Once I'd made a few horse loving Facebook friends, I kept seeing these pictures with the wording: HIP #___ CAMELOT, a date, SARAH ANDREW. The horses all had auction stickers on their rumps. Upon investigation I learned that these were unwanted New Jersey auction horses that were in danger of being shipped to slaughter. A group of volunteers called Camelot Horse Weekly was working to find them homes via Facebook networking. They've placed about 5,000 horses to date, an impressive number considering the effort is only a few years old. Many of the photos used in the Horses and Hope calendars were taken at the Camelot Auction facility, and as you will read below, were instrumental in saving lives.
Here's one woman's testimonial in the form of a thank you letter to the Camelot volunteers:
"To the volunteers at Camelot Horse Weekly: I'm writing to say thank you. Thank you for Bonnie. (see pic) Thank you for Elliott and Caleb - two other rescues we have pulled directly from a local slaughter auction here in TN. Thank you for using social media to educate, inform, enlighten humans, and to rescue and rehome horses. I was naively unaware of horse slaughter before last summer. I thought the only horses that went to slaughter were the aged, sick, or infirm. I was CLUELESS. And then, a Facebook friend posted the picture above and I saw it on Monday, August 20, 2012. Again, being oh-so-naive, I thought this little mare was the only horse being sold at a CATTLE AUCTION, so I quickly called my husband, told him I was going to rescue this girl, and then contacted Camelot and bought her.Thank you for all the information you share here on this page regarding transport. I found an excellent shipper and she arrived in great shape. Thank you for all the information you and others post here about "what to expect" with a rescue horse. I was shocked to learn Bonnie was NOT just one horse at a cattle auction, but, rather, one of literally THOUSANDS of horses that are sold for meat each week. I had no idea. So, Camelot, I am writing to say, "thank you." Every one of you has helped educate me. My family thanks you for three lives saved because of your combined, dedicated efforts. Having visited the local auction twice - each time to pull one horse - I cannot imagine how difficult it must be to go week after week and do all those evaluations, photographs, and etc. Dark, cold, hot, wet, dusty - in all conditions, there y'all are - trying desperately to showcase another horse, save one more, share & crosspost just one more pic, so another horse can find its forever home.Words seem so inadequate, yet that's all I have - to express the profound impact y'all have had on me, my equine family, my awareness of this issue, and the seismic shift that occurred in my value system. I no longer dream of some "well-bred" high-dollar dressage mount. Instead, I work with my rescues and celebrate each step forward in our partnership of trust as much as I ever would a Grand Prix championship ribbon. And I spend what dollars might have gone towards that well-bred dressage mount to support other rescue efforts. So, when y'all are thinking, "does anyone really care out there in social-media land?" or if you're feeling burned out or frustrated, please know that you are making a HUGE impact and a HUGE difference, in the lives of these horses that arrive at Camelot each week, as well as in the lives of humans and horses you will never meet. May God richly bless each of you in 2014 and beyond." - Esther

The Starfish Story -more info & credits here
An old man had a habit of early morning walks on the beach. One day, after a storm, he saw a human figure in the distance moving like a dancer. As he came closer he saw that it was a young woman and she was not dancing but was reaching down to the sand, picking up a starfish and very gently throwing them into the ocean. "Young lady," he asked, "Why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?" "The sun is up, and the tide is going out, and if I do not throw them in they will die." "But young lady, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along it? You cannot possibly make a difference." The young woman listened politely, paused and then bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it into the sea, past the breaking waves, saying, "It made a difference for that one." The old man looked at the young woman inquisitively and thought about what she had done. Inspired, he joined her in throwing starfish back into the sea. Soon others joined, and all the starfish were saved."

She's at it again! What started as HoofPrints' owner trying to use up excess jewelry components and thus declutter... has morphed into a dozen new necklaces and bracelets, PLUS matching earrings! I tried pretty hard to come up with a necklace design using the glass pony beads - goodness knows I had plenty of components to work with - but it just wasn't working. Then, I found these GEMSTONE necklaces - in 3 lovely colors that match the copper perfectly and one that goes great with pewter (silver). These are unique in that they are a little longer (adjusts from 22" - 25") The beads are a chunky 7mm (about 5/16") so it makes for a substantial necklace. Comes in 4 colors - Rose Quartz (shown), Red Tigereye , Gold Tigereye, and Autumn Marble. See these, and the other HoofPrint jewelry here

Clutter busting continues at HoofPrints
My efforts to clear the warehouse (and my house- house) of accumulated oddball products continues to gain momentum. I've written about it before. The point continues to be, sometimes the space becomes more valuable than the items that are occupying it. So this is where most places say... "our loss is your gain!" Well, check out this super-cheap stuff and BUY IT. And your gain will be my gain, too. Because I need that space on the shelf.
The Half Price Page is here - check this often as they're one-of-a-kind things that will sell quickly and be replaced with whatever else starts to get on my nerves. I am currently going through a large stash of samples* - so many wonderful things, it's hard to choose just a handful for the catalog. And the rest have got to go! Only one of each available so act fast if you see something you like.
*A note about the samples - Someone made a comment on the HoofPrints Facebook page that the samples are free to me and implied should thus be priced accordingly. Just to set the record straight - I pay for almost every sample I acquire. Occasionally an author or publisher will send me a book unsolicited, but I prefer to buy these anonymously so if I review and don't think it is a good fit for the product line, I don't feel guilty about not including it.
Half Price PRINTS are here - there are a lot of lovely prints languishing in drawers here that really should be hanging on folks' walls making them smile and beautifying their homes. Fall/winter is busy season here and I don't encourage print sales then - I don't have the extra time it takes to wrap these carefully for safe delivery. Now that Christmas is past, I've marked them way down now to sweeten the deal.
ALSO New is Half Price JEWELRY here - The more I got to digging, the more I found. Jewelry doesn't take up much room - suffice to say there is a LOT of lovely stuff that needs to find a new home. Then there's that whole problem I have with the beads. It's getting worse. Stay tuned for details on that.
Newest is Half Price Books & Magazine Back Issues here
This represents a major turning point for HoofPrints owner Gina Keesling. This treasure trove of magazine back issues has been lovingly collected and hoarded for many, many years. It's getting to be a space problem, keeping them all stored AND due to the sheer volume of them, along with my busy schedule, they rarely get any attention. But even now, as I go through them to write sales descriptions, I am feeling sad at the prospect of letting go of this vast collection of pictures and articles about all the things I love - Horses, Dogs, Farriery and Blacksmithing, The West, Pretty Western Clothes and Jewelry, Awesome Country Homes, Recipes for Hearty Food, Healthy Living, Spirituality and more. I'll do my best to mention the content that stands out to me in the descriptions. Prices on these back issues reflect the fact that I am still very much in love with them, however they are at or below what the publishers are charging. The current sales list is small, but I'll be adding more as I am able; going through these is a slow process, as you can imagine, I get sidetracked frequently by all the fascinating content that lead me to hoard these in the first place.
Our Closeouts Page is here - it features items that are being phased out - still lots of good deals to be had there, too.

ABOUT THE COMPANY AND THIS NEWSLETTERFarriers Greeting Cards was started by Gina Keesling in 1986 (in a very small way) to provide helpful promotional materials for farrier husband Rob. Along the way we became HoofPrints.com, too, adding a selection of fun horse and dog products geared toward women of a certain age. This newsletter is emailed to subscribers a few times a month, depending on how often I have something to share. Watch for special sales, interesting stories, uplifting quotes and more.

Viral marketing... it sounds bad, doesn't it? You can ask my husband - a frequent topic around here is that of forwarded emails - and the psychology behind them - just WHAT prompts people to decide; "I am going to send this to everyone I know!".
We receive a lot of them. Some are pretty good, and others are dumb. Dumb in a myriad of ways... Alarmist email rumors that have been around forever - that folks keep sending "just in case it's true" Pictures of someone's butt (or worse) - don't even get me started about the firecracker butt - but at least that one was timely when it showed up around July 4. Christian messages that are uplifting - until you get to the end and you're threatened "if you're not ashamed that you love Jesus, forward this - if you are, then delete." Pictures of cute puppies and kittens (awww)
I enjoy writing these newsletters - and sharing all this stuff with you all. But the fact is, it's also a way to help us stay connected with customers and sell products during the time between catalog mailings (which is only once a year) So I really, really like it when someone new stumbles upon the newsletter and is excited to "discover" our company and the products we offer.
In all my efforts to make the newsletter interesting and forward-worthy - it never occurred to me to JUST ASK you all to send it! Duh. Sometimes the obvious is elusive, I guess. So here goes - my request to ask you to forward our email newsletter to your horsey friends. All we ask is that you please be judicious and only send to folks who might be interested. Otherwise we are no better than the "firecracker butt". Click to get started. (please note - using this form does NOT subscribe anyone to our list - it is a one-time only forward)
