ABOUT THE COMPANY AND THIS NEWSLETTER
Farriers Greeting Cards was started by Gina Keesling in 1986 (in a very small way) to provide helpful promotional materials for farrier husband Rob. Along the way we became HoofPrints.com, too, adding a selection of fun horse and dog products geared toward women of a certain age. This newsletter is emailed to subscribers a few times a month, depending on how often I have something to share. Watch for special sales, interesting stories, uplifting quotes and more.
2012 Fall Catalog Cover
First, the BAD NEWS
Longtime newsletter subscribers will remember that every summer for years I have run a story wringing my hands about what it's like to put together the HoofPrints catalog; It takes a LONG time to put one of these together. I start in the summer - when everyone else is doing vacation stuff and having fun. I am analyzing sales numbers, reviewing submissions, making prototypes, scheduling photo shoots...

...then there's the layout; Imagine having a 48 room house. Go in every room and take away some of the furnishings. Then go shop for new stuff - beautiful new stuff that no one has ever seen before, but that you're sure they will love - AND will make sense with the stuff that you already have. Then figure out how to arrange it all in a way that is useful, sensible, and visually appealing. That's kind of how catalog layout goes. Except I have to keep in mind the tastes of thousands of viewers - people that I've never met (most of them, anyway) Whew! It's a big job and I've done it every year since I started the company in the late 1980's. Until now.
This year, there will be no catalog. The good news is now you don't have to wait for it to show up in the mail! You can do your holiday shopping NOW! The complete product line is showcased on the website here. If you want to mail in your order, you have a couple of options. You can pretend you're ordering online - place items in your shopping cart as usual - then when you get to the last step where the cart is all tallied with the shipping charges added, etc, PRINT that out and mail it in with your check. You can even print a second copy for your records that way. The other option is to go to the pdf version of the most recent catalog and print the order form that's on page 47. To do that click here.
Horse Woman Sweatshirt
It's SWEATSHIRT SUNDAY!
20% OFF ALL ITEMS on orders that include a SWEATSHIRT - use Coupon Code SS20
Chilly fall temps are upon us, and it's time to break out the sweatshirts. If you're like me, when you dig this stuff out you notice some of it's looking pretty shabby. Why not give yourself a little pick-me-up and order a few fun replacements?

Here's one of my favorites. This chocolatey brown sweatshirt was YEARS in the making...   A few years ago, while shopping for nothing in particular, I happened upon some fabric that looked like tooled leather. It was expensive, but I bought a whole bolt of it - intending to use it on a shirt design that I had on the drawing board at the time. When the sample was made of that design, it looked terrible. No amount of tweaking improved it, either; much to the chagrin of my embroiderer, who endured my multiple requests to change thread colors and make new prototype sew-outs, etc.

So, sadly, I put my treasure aside. And the fabric "haunted" me - it was the upholstery in a gorgeous Sundowner horse trailer that I toured at a trade show. It's the cover of our Tooled Leather Scrapbook here. Everywhere I looked, I saw this elegant brown floral leather pattern. Still - nothing worked out design wise for the shirt and it was driving my crazy. Here I had this perfectly western, beautiful fabric - and I could NOT seem to make it into an attractive design no matter how hard I tried.

This dragged on for two YEARS! Then, we got a sample sweatshirt in - in this nice dark brown - intending to market it to men. Something made me revisit the forgotten fabric, and this time it was a winner! After that, the designing was easy. It's funny how things fall into place easily when the time is right... I was able to find a company in southern Indiana that specializes in precision cutting fabric using high-pressure jets of water. As luck would have it, the customer service rep who handles my orders is also a horse woman - and she took special care to make sure our H-O-R-S-E letters were cut just right. Then the fabric letters come back here to Alexandria to be carefully stitched onto this lovely brown sweatshirt, complete with the silhouette of a woman and her cantering horse. Whew! I think it was worth the wait.

Celadon Barn Girl Hood
It's SWEATSHIRT SUNDAY!
20% OFF ALL ITEMS on orders that include a SWEATSHIRT - use Coupon Code SS20
The black BARN girl sweatshirt was a big hit in spite of the $60 price tag... she was even spotted trekking on horseback in Outer Mongolia! (full story here)
Many of you preferred a full zip hoodie instead of a pullover (the un-zippered front was necessary to accommodate the bazillion stitches that it took to embroider the design - which, BTW, is beautifully sketched by artist Lesley Bruce) I found one in this lovely celadon green. It's garment washed, super soft, and ladies cut. We've separated the girl from her name, and her rude horses; she stands alone with her hay bale. To order click here

Not To Say Horse Owner Sweatshirt & Mug

Here's another favorite:
Things not to say to a horse owner
We've all heard them... "helpful" comments from well-meaning folks who haven't got a clue. We've gathered them all up and placed them on a sweatshirt and mug. Do you have a non-horsey friend or family member who just doesn't "get it"? Maybe these will help...

Things Not To Say to a Horse Owner:
Riding isn't a sport, the horse does all the work. If you kept the house as neat as you do the barn, we wouldn't have to look for things. Sure, I can ride. I went riding on my vacation two years ago. Your horse is only worth what someone will pay you for him. Oh - you're going to breed her... how long will it take her to have a litter? Gosh - your horse trailer cost more than your house! Shouldn't that saddle in your front room be in the barn? Why do you have so many horses? You can only ride one at a time. Geez- It's ONLY a horse! How much did you say you paid for those shoes? ____ is old and you don't ride him anyway, why don't you sell him? Did you know that your horse is foaming at the mouth? The way you treat that horse, you'd think it was part of your family. I heard that Dr Phil said that owning a horse is good exercise - for the horse. Haven't you outgrown that horse "thing" yet? Any phrase containing the word "hayburner" If you spent as much time with your husband as you do your horse, you'd have a happier marriage. My car/boat/motorcycle just sits in the garage until I need it. You have a Quarter Horse? Where's the rest of him?
Did you step in something? Your boots stink. Should you still be riding at your age? When can we come to ride? You have to buy hay? Can't they just eat grass? What, I shouldn't wear flip-flops out to your barn? Do you have any clothes besides jeans & horse t-shirts? Why do you take lessons? I thought you knew how to ride. The baby horse is so cute - (when referring to an aged PONY) You should show that horse who's boss, then he'll do what you want! My teen is so lazy. I'll send him/her to your place-maybe you can get him/her to work! How many more times are you going to let that horse throw you off before you give it up? Do horses really have a personality? Eew! Horse poop. How do you walk around here? So where do you get all of your money? I know you have money, cause you've got horses. Doesn't it hurt when you fall off? Your barn is cleaner than your house. Imagine how much money you'd have if you didn't have all these horses to feed! Why put your vet's/farrier's kids through college? You could be taking a vacation! Your horse's only talent is stimulating the economy. You have horses... you must be RICH! Are you sure he can breathe with that thing (girth) wrapped around his gut? Why don't you train him to go outside like a dog, instead of in his stall? You paid HOW much?

Arab Tent by Landseer
THE HORSE IN ART I talked about this one last time - this wonderful coffee table book by John Baskett also has a full page image of The Arab Tent by Sir Edwin Landseer. He's another one of my favorite equine artists and is featured in this latest HALF PRICE BOOK offer. This profusely illustrated hardcover book begins with the horse in ancient civilizations, including masterpieces from Asia, and then discusses the horse in the Middle Ages, in which the animal was bred for warfare and agriculture and is represented in such scenes as the Bayeaux Tapestry. Renaissance artists, whose interest in horses was as great as that for the human form, are then discussed, evidence of which is shown in the skillful drawings of Leonardo da Vinci. The 17th century brought beautiful examples of naturalism from such masters as Peter Paul Rubens, while George Stubbs became the premier horse painter in 18th-century England. Works by Americans George Catlin and Frederic Remington are also explored, along with exquisite miniatures of natural scenes produced by Persian and Mughal painters from varying periods.

A new edition of a long out-of-print gem, The Horse in Art brings artistic representation of the horse to life - for only $20! See this, and the rest of the HALF PRICE BOOKS here

Clean Up CLOSEUP
SPRING CLEANING - (now SUMMER cleaning) continues at HoofPrints
My efforts to clear the warehouse (and my house- house) of accumulated oddball products continues to gain momentum. I've written about it before. The point continues to be, sometimes the space becomes more valuable than the items that are occupying it. So this is where most places say... "our loss is your gain!" Well, check out this super-cheap stuff and BUY IT. And your gain will be my gain, too. Because I need that space on the shelf.

The Half Price Page is here - check this often as they're one-of-a-kind things that will sell quickly and be replaced with whatever else starts to get on my nerves. I am currently going through a large stash of samples* - so many wonderful things, it's hard to choose just a handful for the catalog. And the rest have got to go! Only one of each available so act fast if you see something you like.

*A note about the samples - Someone made a comment on the HoofPrints Facebook page that the samples are free to me and implied should thus be priced accordingly. Just to set the record straight - I pay for almost every sample I acquire. Occasionally an author or publisher will send me a book unsolicited, but I prefer to buy these anonymously so if I review and don't think it is a good fit for the product line, I don't feel guilty about not including it.

Half Price PRINTS are here - there are a lot of lovely prints languishing in drawers here that really should be hanging on folks' walls making them smile and beautifying their homes. Summer is NOT the time that people are inclined for "nesting" - that usually happens during the colder months when everyone's inside. But fall/winter is busy season here and I don't encourage print sales then - I don't have the extra time it takes to wrap these carefully for safe delivery. I've marked them way down now to sweeten the deal.

ALSO New is Half Price JEWELRY here - The more I got to digging, the more I found. Jewelry doesn't take up much room - suffice to say there is a LOT of lovely stuff that needs to find a new home. Then there's that whole problem I have with the beads. It's getting worse. Stay tuned for details on that.

Newest is Half Price Books & Magazine Back Issues here
This represents a major turning point for HoofPrints owner Gina Keesling. This treasure trove of magazine back issues has been lovingly collected and hoarded for many, many years. It's getting to be a space problem, keeping them all stored AND due to the sheer volume of them, along with my busy schedule, they rarely get any attention. But even now, as I go through them to write sales descriptions, I am feeling sad at the prospect of letting go of this vast collection of pictures and articles about all the things I love - Horses, Dogs, Farriery and Blacksmithing, The West, Pretty Western Clothes and Jewelry, Awesome Country Homes, Recipes for Hearty Food, Healthy Living, Spirituality and more. I'll do my best to mention the content that stands out to me in the descriptions. Prices on these back issues reflect the fact that I am still very much in love with them, however they are at or below what the publishers are charging. The current sales list is small, but I'll be adding more as I am able; going through these is a slow process, as you can imagine, I get sidetracked frequently by all the fascinating content that lead me to hoard these in the first place.

Our Closeouts Page is here - it features items that are being phased out - still lots of good deals to be had there, too.

Viral marketing... it sounds bad, doesn't it?
You can ask my husband - a frequent topic around here is that of forwarded emails - and the psychology behind them - just WHAT prompts people to decide; "I am going to send this to everyone I know!".

We receive a lot of them. Some are pretty good, and others are dumb. Dumb in a myriad of ways...  Alarmist email rumors that have been around forever - that folks keep sending "just in case it's true" Pictures of someone's butt (or worse) - don't even get me started about the firecracker butt - but at least that one was timely when it showed up around July 4. Christian messages that are uplifting - until you get to the end and you're threatened "if you're not ashamed that you love Jesus, forward this - if you are, then delete." Pictures of cute puppies and kittens (awww)

I enjoy writing these newsletters - and sharing all this stuff with you all. But the fact is, it's also a way to help us stay connected with customers and sell products during the time between catalog mailings (which is only once a year) So I really, really like it when someone new stumbles upon the newsletter and is excited to "discover" our company and the products we offer.

In all my efforts to make the newsletter interesting and forward-worthy - it never occurred to me to JUST ASK you all to send it! Duh. Sometimes the obvious is elusive, I guess. So here goes - my request to ask you to forward our email newsletter to your horsey friends.  All we ask is that you please be judicious and only send to folks who might be interested. Otherwise we are no better than the "firecracker butt". Click to get started. (please note - using this form does NOT subscribe anyone to our list - it is a one-time only forward)
