Legislative WRPA - Current Events
Please keep contacting your legislators to push for $3 million in Capital Budget funding for the Youth Athletic Fund (YAF): To those of you who have already reached out to legislators and urged inclusion of $3 million to re-establish the Youth Athletic Field (YAF) account in the Capital Budget - we appreciate it very much. To those who may not have done so yet, it is not too late. Please contact your area legislators, and key Members of the Senate Ways & Means Capital Budget committees. Sample letter
Department of Revenue (DOR) Ruling: Skyhawks received a ruling by DOR that their camps qualify as "instructional lessons." Therefore they are not required to collect sales tax form their customers on charges for these camps. Income however remains subject to B&O tax under the services and other activities classification. Based on this ruling there are likely other applications to non-Skyhawk types of sports camps that park and recreation providers should consider clarifying an exemption through DOR.
The NRPA Legislative Forum is this week in Washington D.C. Jeron Gates, Seattle, is attending on a WRPA Young Professional scholarship and Sarah Sandquist, Redmond, is attending on a NRPA Young Professional scholarship. They join several others from our state in meetings with our congressional representatives and advocating for funding and resources that have a positive impact on our communities.

Kathy Kravit-Smith, Director, Pierce County Parks & Recreation announces her retirement effective end of July. "I am retiring from the sweetest County Park system in the country, with some of the most incredible park professionals I have ever had the privilege of serving. My plans are to be a full time mother, taking the next 6 years to give my daughter all of the heart and soul previously reserved for public service. I'm not sure my 12 year old shares my enthusiasm!" |

Kayaking Instructor Training
Free for qualified applicants: Level 2 Kayak Instructor Development Workshop, April 8-11 at Deception Pass State Park. Washington State Parks and leaders of Washington State's paddlesports community are working to prevent accident and deaths involving human-powered boats on our state's waterways. Paddlesports deaths in Washington are among the highest in the nation per capita, accounting for 35% or more of all boating fatalities. For this reason Washington State Parks is funding paddlesports instructor training for the staff and volunteers of community boating programs. Application
