Can You Receive Social Security Disability or Retirement if You Live Overseas?
|
The Social Security Administration (SSA) will send payments to U.S. Citizens who are eligible for Social Security Disability or Social Security Retirement benefits and are living abroad, with a few exceptions.
U.S. Department of the Treasury regulations prohibit making Social Security payments to anyone in Cuba or North Korea. If you are a U.S. citizen in Cuba or North Korea, your payments will be withheld until you move to a country where SSA can send the withheld payments.
In addition, the SSA generally does not send Social Security payments to individuals in Azerbaijan, Belarus, the Country of Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Vietnam, but those receiving benefits may be able to apply for an exception. In such cases, retirees and those on disability may have to agree to certain conditions, such as appearing in person at the U.S. embassy each month, to pick up their payments.
Citizens of other countries who receive Social Security Disability or Retirement Benefits have additional restrictions on the receipt of benefits while outside the United States.
For information on SSI Benefits if you leave the United States, please see the article in my March 2014 Newsletter by clicking here.

"Archie" Comic Books To Now Feature a Character With a Disability
|

Archie Comics has announced a new addition to the cast of characters attending Riverdale High School. The new character is Harper, the cousin of Veronica Lodge.
Harper Lodge will be the first disabled character in the comics, but her disability will not define her.
In an official statement from Archie Comics, publisher Jon Goldwater said: "Harper is, first and foremost, a funny, fashionable and witty teenager. The fact that she's disabled is only one part of her story, and we're excited to welcome her to Riverdale and Archie Comics."
Harper's recurring role will see her as the new love interest for Archie, who after all these years still cannot decide between blonde girl-next-door Betty and dark-haired rich girl Veronica.
Harper will debut in Archie #656, arriving June 18, 2014.
