SUNDAY LETTER - FEBRUARY 21, 2016
MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL
A Hive of Husky Activity

OK, I know, two mixed fauna metaphors, but anyway . . .

With the gala coming up on March 5 ( Mary and I just bought our tickets and our Golden Tickets-Did you buy yours yet?) the Development Office is in high-activity mode. A very hardworking and committed group of parents, led by Stephanie Byers, is already putting in long hours to make sure the event will be a spectacular one for us. After the annual fund, the gala is our biggest fundraising event of the year. Have your kids told you about the luxury Staples Center suite for the sold out Adele concert? Or the romantic getaways in Paris or New Orleans? Further information is here. Buy your tickets now!

Only the Admission Office is more active at the moment as they process scores of applications for next fall. We will grow enrollment next year and are already looking at a record-breaking 110 applications (versus 90 at the same time last year) to fill approximately 60 spots. So, as returning families, please get your contracts back to the business office by this week. And, as a courtesy to newly applying families and the admission office's assessment of how many places are available, please let the business office know by tomorrow if you will not be taking up your place next year, or if, for whatever reason, you need more time to send in your contract.

And the office of College Counselor Burnie Dyment is running in a close third place for activity level as acceptances begin coming in for the class of 2016 (Cal Poly Pomona and West Point US Army Academy this week) at the same time as she is meeting one-on-one with class of 2017 students and parents. The college counseling process is very individualized here, and our students benefit not only from Ms. Dyment's close attention and deep knowledge, but also from letters of support from teachers and advisors with relationships developed over several years to back up academic and co-curricular records.

Phew! I'm tired just writing this!

SUPPORT THE COSTA RICA SERVICE LEARNING PROJECT
On March 28th, students from Rolling Hills Preparatory and Renaissance Schools will embark on a service learning trip for ten days, in conjunction with World Leadership School, to the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica. Eighteen of us are raising money to work on a Community Project that will be designed in consultation with the needs and desires of the Dos Brazos de Rio Tigre citizens.

It is our hope this trip will redefine service as:
- establishing a partnership instead of just donating money.
- understanding the importance of political and financial situations that impact a community.
- being respectful of and participating in different cultures.
- connecting on a personal level and listening to people of this community.

Your donation will directly impact this community. We appreciate your consideration to donate towards our project.

Ski and Snowboard Trip
Saturday, February 27, 2016

The trip is open to all RHP/Renaissance students, faculty and staff. Bus maximum capacity is 40...so space is limited.

All participants who wish to take part in our ski/snowboard trip to Snow Summit near Big Bear Mountain will depart from school campus on a chartered bus at 5:30 AM. Participants must be on campus by 5:15 A.M. Participants will be able to bring their own equipment or rent equipment in advance (including a helmet, if they wish). We expect the trip to return to campus around 7:00 PM.

The cost is $100 per participant. All checks should be made payable to Rolling Hills Preparatory School and should be turned in with the waiver forms by Wednesday, February 24, 2016. In addition to the cost above, participants will also want to pack food for lunch or bring money to buy food in the lodge.

Two waivers need to be signed for students to take part in the trip. The waiver for the school can be downloaded here, but the waiver for the mountain is electronic and all participants must go to this link (http://goo.gl/wMxz4i) and complete the questions asked.

Participants interested in the trip must turn in all waivers and the $100 payment to the main office by the end of the day on Wednesday, February 24, 2016.

Please contact Claire Cassidy (ccassidy@rollinghillsprep.org) with any questions.

SERVICE LEARNING OPPORTUNITY: COMMUNITY HELPLINE
Directory Deliveries for Community Helpline
Community Helpline needs volunteers for the annual PV Directory Delivery taking place on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at Rancho Vista Elementary School. Adults are needed as drivers and students are needed to hand deliver the small phone books. This is a great service learning opportunity for families to volunteer together.

Contact Ms. Ramirez for more information at hramirez@rollinghillsprep.org
SERVICE LEARNING OPPORTUNITY: KIDS IN THE KITCHEN
NHS is helping to promote an event in Long Beach to teach kids about healthy habits, including healthy eating and physical activity. Students from NHS will be volunteering to help get kids active at the fair. One of their goals is to make sure each kid at the fair leaves with a raffle prize. So, they are looking for raffle items kids can use that day to be active: all types of balls, jump ropes, hula hoops, bikes, etc. Items need to be new and each item donated will count as one service hour. There is no limit to the items students can donate, but if they want to donate cash ($10 is one service hour) they can only donate up to $20, or earn 2 service hours.

Items/cash should be turned in to Mrs. Wratschko (Room 8A) by March 4th. This is an awesome opportunity for middle schoolers in particular to get their required hours.

SENIOR SPEECH: SARA B.

We were waiting in line looking at the crazy menu of ice cream when I received a phone call. I went outside in the brisk air and answered. My uncle Will had called. He asked if I wanted to be a Camera Production Assistant (PA) for a Disney shoot. Without hesitation I said yes. My aunt was waiting in the car and was looking at me like I was crazy because I was so excited. Once we got back to the house, I told the rest of my family and they were beyond excited and jealous for me. I waited the next two weeks only for the shoot to be pushed back two more, three weeks ago from this weekend...
