Fields Report

New Fields for CBAA  We will have three new lighted soccer fields which will go online for CBAA programs this fall in Plumstead Township: Hanusey Memorial Park; located in the Carriage Hill Development (Route 313 and Ferry Road)

Field Survey   CBAA Soccer sent a survey to coaches trying to identify maintenance issues that could be resolved using volunteer efforts at our playing facilities. We are in the process of compiling those survey results, and will be coordinating a day of volunteer service to address as many issues as we can. Unfortunately, it is not within our power to address all concerns, particularly at township or school district owned fields, but we will do our best. For those issues we can't address within the organization using volunteer effort, we will work with outside service providers and/or with the townships and school district to resolve.

New Procedures for Volunteering
Volunteer
The CBAA organization runs on volunteers!
The Best form of Natural Energy!

New procedures will be put into place starting Fall 2013:  While registering your player you will have the option to select 'volunteer buyout' or agree to fulfill a volunteer opportunity during the season.   At the conclusion of the season, those families that did not select the volunteer buy-out option and did not fulfill their volunteer obligation will be asked to pay the volunteer buy-out. This will help us ensure that all our soccer families are treated equally. For intramural families, this process will occur each Fall and Spring, for travel families, this will be done on an annual basis in the Spring.

"Ask the DOC" Corner

A new feature that we have added to our eNews is the DOC Corner!  Our Directors of Coaching (DOCs) for IM and Travel Soccer answer commonly asked coaching questions.  Below are excerpts from this month's "DOC Corner".  Please visit the IM Website and the BUSC website We will be updating these regularly and welcome your questions to be featured in our next e-newsletter.

IM DOC Neil What factors are most important for a child in their first two or three years playing soccer?

For the complete beginner there are many important issues to consider but the 4 below items are certainly significant:

1.  They need to be in an 'environment of comfort' so the role of the parent remains key even though a formal coach may oversee the program

2.  The coach in charge of this environment needs to focus on Fun and more FUN! Personality traits of the coach of such young 'raw' players must include patience and a keen sense of humor!

3.  A main objective as far as the 'technical' content of the sessions is to get beginners and young players touching the ball and feeling comfortable while in movement with the ball

4.  It is essential the coaching environment is informal and low key allowing every child the opportunity to be as involved as possible       ....Neils Q&A continued here

Buckingham United DOC Ryan Hayward

Ryan Hayward

What is "Academy Training" and what are the benefits?

"Academy Training" is the concept of training all teams in the age group together, instead of separating the teams and training them individually.  The main benefit is building a cohesive age group, where all the players are given the exact same developmental opportunities.  At younger age groups, players develop at their own pace, and this method helps to ensure that late developers and younger players in the age group are not left behind in the developmental process.

What is the most important thing that my child should be focusing on in their first year of travel soccer?

U8/U9 players should focus almost entirely on becoming more comfortable on the ball, and in their 1v1 confrontations on the field.   It is my opinion that good teams are the culmination of technically proficient, and confident 1v1 players.  A good coach can always teach a team to play "team soccer" as they get older, if the players have been developed properly as individual players at a young age.     ....Ryan's Q&A continued here

Blast Boys, 2nd year in a row, State Cup Finals

For the second year in a row, the Buckingham United Blast found themselves in the State Cup finals.  This year, the U13 boys were playing in the finals of the Eastern Pennsylvania Presidents Cup.  On the road leading to the finals, the boys drew against Montgomery, and defeated YMS and Wyoming Valley....scoring a total of 15 goals.  On the day of the final match, they faced a very strong team from West Chester.  The match was tied 0-0 at the end of regulation, and both teams scored one goal in each of the overtime periods.  When the dust settled, West Chester defeated the Blast on the 10th shot of a penalty shootout.  Although the boys were disappointed in the outcome, the coaching staff could not have been more proud of their grit and determination.  The team also received great news that because of their performance in the State Cup competition, they would be headed to New Hampshire to represent Buckingham United and EPYSA in the Presidents Cup Regional tournament.  The boys are extremely excited and will do everything they can to make Buckingham United proud.  Go Blast!!

Festival Fun!!!

The U7/U8 Soccer Academy got off to a roaring start!  Over 40 kids have been playing hard and having fun on the Herbst micro-fields every Friday night.  They are putting their new skills to the test against other soccer clubs during festivals that have been scheduled throughout the spring season.  What a wonderful opportunity for these boys and girls to learn the skills necessary for travel soccer!  The sessions are held by Ryan Hayward, BUSC Director of Coaching, and assisted by Erin and Ian Lutz, two experienced soccer players who volunteer their Friday nights to share their passion for soccer with the Academy kids. The Soccer Academy is open to any U7/U8 player who is interested and has sessions in fall, winter and spring. Registration will be open for fall soon, so check the Academy website, and don't miss out on the fun!

Honoring the Game Would Have Saved a Life,  By Jim Thompson, PCA Founder and CEO
PCA's deepest sympathies go out to Ricardo Portillo's family and friends. Ricardo Portillo, a youth soccer referee in Utah, died last weekend after being struck by a player who was upset about a call Portillo made. That senseless tragedy -- a family losing its father because of someone's anger over a soccer game -- is indicative of a win-at-all-cost mentality in sports that PCA is working to change.

PCA Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) is a national non-profit organization developing "Better Athletes, Better People." For more information about PCA, including a video that features Hall of Fame Quarterback and PCA National Advisory Board Member Steve Young visit here.
