SBOE Hears RT3 Update 
The State Board of Education (SBOE) met in committee on Wednesday, August 20th and as a full board on Thursday, August 21st. 
 
The SBOE heard a report on Race to the Top (RT3), including information on the performance evaluations of educators in RT3 districts and RT3 merit bonuses detailed in PAGE'S separate report HERE.
 
Coleman Wins Superintendent's Impact Award
House Education Committee Chair Rep. Brooks Coleman (R-Duluth) was awarded the first Superintendent's Impact Award by state school superintendent Richard Woods in recognition of his sponsorship of HB 91. This bill retroactively removes outdated testing requirements that serve as a barrier preventing thousands of Georgians from receiving high school diplomas. Since the bill became law this spring, over 17,000 Georgians have received diplomas.

 
CCRPI Tweaked
The SBOE also approved an action item to change Georgia's College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI), updating testing language and removing RT3. Access 2016 CCRPI Indicators HERE.

High School Indicators
  • Removed GA HS Writing Test Indicator
  • Added Algebra I and Geometry to the mathematics content mastery indicators
  • Moved the IB Career Related Programme component
  • Removed RT3
Middle School Indicatiors
  • Added GA Milestones to EOC in mathematics and science content mastery indicators (in accordance with ESEA waiver)
  • Added Milestones EOC to indicators 

Elementary School Indicators

  • Removed RT3
District Flexibility
The "Investing in Education Excellence" (IE2) school district governance option, which is now referred to as "Strategic Waiver" district option, was approved for the following districts: Chattooga, Cherokee, Franklin, Glynn, Lee, Macon, Polk, and Worth.  Access an updated list of school district flexibility choices HERE.

Class size waivers were approved more than a dozen districts, bringing the total number of districts waiving Georgia class size rules to more than 100.
Other Items
The board also heard an overview of changes to the AP US History framework, initiated rules related to Suicide Prevention Training for certified school staff, approved contracts, and conducted other business. Review a full agenda, supporting documents, and archived footage HERE.
