DOT Proposes "Reverse Logistics" Rulemaking for Hazardous Materials Shipments

Russ Boesch, CPEA, CHMM, STC Senior Program Director, Nashua, NH

On August 11, 2014, the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA, a division of the U.S. Department of Transportation) published a proposed rulemaking to revise the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMRs) for return shipments of certain hazardous materials by motor vehicle. The proposed rule defines "reverse logistics" as the process of moving DOT hazardous materials from their final destination for capturing value, recall, replacement, proper disposal, or other similar reasons. >>>

Electronic Manifests for Hazardous Wastes-One Step Closer to Reality

Deborah Hunsicker, STC Senior Analyst, Sagle, ID

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has finally moved a step closer to its goal of establishing an electronic manifesting system.  On February 7, 2014, the agency issued a final rule (79 FR 7517) outlining the regulatory framework for a system that will authorize the use of electronic manifests for tracking shipments of hazardous waste from the generator to the site of ultimate disposition. >>>

Fortune Cookie Wisdom: "No Matter What Your Past Has Been, You Have a Spotless Future"

Curt Johnson, CPEA, STC Senior Program Director, Richmond, TX

At least once a year, the Auditing Roundtable or a LinkedIn discussion group engages in a debate about how companies measure their audits and whether to rate findings. After all, without a meaningful means for measuring performance, companies can't tell if conditions are improving, staying the same, or deteriorating. >>>

My Mobile Briefcase: Real Apps for Real EHS Work

Melanie Powers-Schanbacher, CPEA, STC Principal, Bridgewater, NJ

Like most EHS professionals, my job requires traveling away from the office. As airlines impose more stringent carry on luggage rules, packing for business trips has become an exercise in space management. Safety equipment, audit tools, regulatory references and project materials compete for space with clothing and travel accessories. And frankly, I no longer want to lug all this stuff around an airport - especially since it seems that the time intervals between connecting flights are also getting tighter.

Luckily, I love Apps! >>>

Are there confined spaces at your workplace?

Please join us for this free webinar where STC President, Barbara Jo Ruble will provide a detailed look at the OSHA requirements, review common problems identified through auditing, and share insights on how to ensure that your Confined Space Management Program effectively protects your employees and contractors against the dangers of confined space entry.
