STC Client Services News: Warehouse Racking Assessment

Barbara Jo Ruble, QEP, CPEA, President, Baltimore, MD

STC recently conducted an assessment of a client's warehouse storage racking systems. One of our Professional Engineers evaluated the racking systems against the ANSI standard MH16.1-2012 - Specification for the Design, Testing and Utilization of Industrial Steel Storage Racks, OSHA requirements, and good engineering practices. The assessment included an engineering analysis of the warehouse racking structure, an assessment of system capacity and capacity labeling documentation, an evaluation of racking damage and a complete deficiencies report with drawings and photographs.

The assessment helped the client to identify dozens of issues, many of which were difficult to spot, but easily correctable. Example issues included: columns out of plumb; column base plates that were not securely anchored to the floor; pallet support channels that were not secured; and damage to some structural members. The investment in this assessment and the resulting corrective actions will help the client avoid costly incidents that injure employees, damage valuable products, and disrupt business.
