April 2014

Greetings!

Spring into the season!

There is a lot of positive encouragement when it comes to buying local food but why? In this issue, we will take a look at why we are encouraged to buy local food and  how you know what  food is local.

Healthy Regards,

  Why Buy Food Local?
  • It encourages activity in the local economy that boosts security; it lowers the distance that food travels from the farm to the consumer's table.
  • The nutrients in the crops retained longer because the distance between harvest and the consumer is minimal.
  • It is sustainable to the local environment - fruits and vegetables are provided with clean water and rich soil.
  • You get to know where your produce is coming from, establishing community and support of local farmers.
  What is Local?
Many grocery stores in your local neighborhood will state whether produce is local.

Other places for fresh crops could be:

Farmers Market - It is usually an open market where fresh food of good quality is sold by the personal farmer or a valuable representative. Another nice perk is you typically can try many of the produce before buying.

Farms - as a consumer, there are many farms open to the public where one can shop for fresh food and learn about the harvesting of the crops.

Co-ops - groceries sold at highest quality to the consumer at best value, usually done in buying clubs. These can be from local farms or may just be a buying club. I recently bought a couple of shipments from Bountiful Baskets.

My basket was very reasonable and I got a TON of fruits and vegetables. It is a gamble of what you will get, but you do know that you got 50% fruit and 50% vegetables. I was pleased that in my first basket I received 2 heads romaine lettuce, broccoli, 2 large cucumbers, 8 apples, 3 large pears, asparagus bunch, batch cherry tomatoes, bulk sweet peppers, bananas, acorn squash and oranges, all for $18.50.

If you want to know more about my experience, feel free to give me a call. I loved it!
