Dietitian Advice Newsletter

June 2013

Greetings!

The month of June is typically very eventful with graduations, weddings, and Father's Day around the corner. With these events comes the worry of eating balanced as well as wanting to feel good in your body.

Do you feel like you have been disappointed with your eating or you have been restricting foods in order to "save up", this sets you up for failure.

It's important to satisfy your body through the foods that you eat as well as satisfy your cravings. This month we will talk about the reason why satisfying those cravings is so important as well as ways to get moving and introduce more summer activities.

Healthy Regards,

Kathryn Fink

Satisfaction in Food and Eating

Satisfaction in food and eating is so important. It is one of the tenants of intuitive  eating, to listen to what your body is truly wanting. It is that debate that some people go through when they really want a hamburger and fries, but think they "should" eat chicken breast, broccoli and a baked potato because it is "better" for them. This can lead to feeling unsatisfied with your selection and still have a desire for that hamburger and fries.

I heard of a client challenged with bypassing what the body really wanted for dinner, which lead to a late night binge at a fast food facility because the body still really wanted a hamburger meal. Part of honoring your satisfaction is realizing that eating what your body desires will often help you to enjoy your food more and most of the time your body is satisfied with a smaller amount.

What have you been craving and not allowing your body to have? Are you afraid you will not be able to stop?

My clients are excited to learn that they can have what their bodies crave and feel in control with it, when they have taken the approach of intuitive eating.

Welcome Intern

I am pleased to welcome Ashlyn, an intern from TexasTech, to my practice for a short time. It is always mutually beneficial to work with an energetic young intern who is excited to be in the "real" world to observe and collaborate ideas.

Being Active is Important

Summer time is a time to get outside and enjoy nature, before it gets too hot. Mornings and evenings are still cooler and great times to get out and enjoy nature.

Here are some tips and suggestions:

  • take an energetic walk to get your day started
  • yard work or gardening
  • water aerobics
  • tennis, basketball, or soccer
  • water volleyball
  • walk or jog in the pool (it takes the stress off the knees and adds resistance)
  • play at water park, lake or pool

Are you tuning into what your body really wants to do activity wise?

Being active is important to both your physical and mental health. You don't have to have a formal exercise plan or go to the gym to get moving!  These activities can allow you to stay active while having fun, and including the whole family.
