Hi!

Golf Performance
EHS Golf Performance at Fairview Country Club Thursday morning

Happy Friday to you!  It's been another fun and productive week at EHS.  Director of Golf Performance, Ali Gilbert and Golf Fitness Trainer, Matt Atkins were up at Fairview Country Club yesterday for the club's member-guest tournament.  Ali and Matt spent the morning performing MAT (Muscle Activation Techniques) on all the golfers before they teed off.  It was a great day!

Congratulations to all those who competed in the Revolution3 Olympic and Half this past weekend.  There are tons pictures from the event up on the EHS Tri and Greenwich Tri Club Facebook pages if you'd like to take a peek.

Have you signed up for the barefoot running workshop yet?  On Wednesday afternoon Physical Therapist, Matt Silvaggio, MSPT, CFMT treated the entire staff to a preview of his presentation, "Barefoot Running: The pros...The cons...and What the Research Shows."   The feedback was unanimous  - it's chock-full of need-to-know info for runners.       You can register for it here.

PS.  There's only one more week until Father's Day - if Dad is a golfer, consider getting him this!

Cheers to an awesome weekend,

Tension Headaches

The majority of headaches are tension type (up to 90%). Tension type headaches are caused by trigger points in the muscles of the neck and head.

Tension type headaches are generally bilateral, of mild to moderate severity and generally described as achy, tight or pressure type pain. Pain can be at the base of the skull, radiate from the neck, back, into the eyes, on top of the head or the face. They are generally not associated with nausea, vomiting or auras; which can be related to cervicogenic or migraine headaches.

General factors that increase symptoms of tension headaches include: stress, sleep deprivation, bad posture, eyestrain, hunger and fatigue. Stress can increase holding patterns and muscle tension leading to increased headaches. Sleep deprivation can cause decreased healing of tissues in the body leading to chronic inflammation. Poor posture is almost always associated with headaches and can lead to increased stress and strain of tissues and joints in the body. Eyestrain can lead to increase of muscle tightness at the base of the skull due to common nerve pathways.

Treating Tension Headaches:

A Manual Physical Therapist can assess and treat dysfunctions of joints, muscles, fascia and nerves of the cervical spine. Improving balance and mobility of the cervical and cranial joints and soft tissues can significantly improve tension headache symptoms.

Therefore tension type headaches can be treated with soft tissue mobilization of trigger points in the muscles of the head and neck. Joint mobilization is used to improve alignment of the spine and mobility of the cranial sutures. Nerve tension can be treated manually to improve function of nerves.  Exercise for the cervical spine is also used to improve and increase overall strength and stability. In addition, relaxation techniques along with education on proper posture and body mechanics are all important components in the prevention of tension headaches.

"...I wish this kind of expertise was available when I was running competitively."

"I was referred to Elite Health Services after a groin injury prevented me from running for almost a year. I am an avid runner and have been active throughout my life, and when I injured myself, I forced myself to take several weeks off. However, after some rest, every time I attempted to run and inject any kind of speed into my workouts, my body would break down. After a year of start, stop, start, stop, I was finally referred to Elite Health Services.

I worked with both Brad Gilden and Dave Potucek, and was immediately struck by their, knowledge, professionalism, and a genuine interest in my welfare. This interest in the welfare of the client is a trait that is displayed by everyone I encountered at EHS. What is even more impressive about Dave, Brad and EHS is their constant desire to advance their own skill level, and be on the cutting edge of the latest thinking and research in physical therapy. On numerous occasions Dave and Brad have told me of the courses they are taking and advanced qualifications for which they are getting certified.

My therapy took a couple of months, during which I learned an enormous amount about my own body, especially how to take care of it. After more than a year of being sidelined, I still remember the day when, during a run, I had to stop because I ran out of gas and not because of pain in my groin.

I have told Dave in the past that I wished this kind of expertise was available when I was running competitively. EHS caters to each client individually, focusing on the needs and abilities of the client. I have no hesitation in recommending Brad, Dave and EHS."
