Hi!
JesseAdelberg
  Meet our intern, Jesse Adelberg

I hope you enjoyed your long Memorial Day weekend and the short work week. :)

Have you met Jesse Adelberg yet?  Jesse is a senior and a rugby player at Greenwich High School and will be here at Elite Health Services to learn about manual physical therapy, functional training, golf fitness and triathlon performance over the next several weeks as part of the GHS internship program.   However once the summer is over, Jesse is off to Endicott College to begin studies in exercise science.  He fits in so well here, we're really going to hate to see him leave.

EHS Tri  will be up at Quassy Amusement Park in Middlebury, CT this weekend for the Revolution3 Triathlon.  If you're up there racing or spectating, don't forget to stop by the booth to say hello!

Have you ever wondered if barefoot running is right for you?   On Wednesday, June 19th Physical Therapist, Matt Silvaggio, MSPT, CFMT will be presenting, "Barefoot Running: The pros...The cons...and What the Research Shows."  Bring a friend and your questions, and get informed!

Cheers,

Diet and Inflammation in the Body
Q & A with Heather Whiting, PT, DPT, CSCS, CFMT

Is there a connection between diet, physical therapy and the healing process?

There is a significant connection between what you consume into your body and the healing process. Your food is the building block and fuel for your body. You wouldn't build a house with a crumbling concrete foundation, and consuming foods that lack nutritional value is the same when it comes to building a healthy body. In physical therapy, we are breaking down bad tissue and trying to rebuild healthy tissue and improve strength. The best way to aid this process is to eat foods that promote tissue growth and the laying down of muscle.

Which types of foods are best to reduce inflammation and promote recovery?

A few key nutrients and minerals can help decrease inflammation and promote a faster recovery. Vitamin C is important in the production of collagen in the body. Collagen is the building block for tendons, ligaments and muscles.  After an injury where these tissues have been damaged, vitamin C is good to consume to help improve collagen synthesis. Omega 3 rich foods are good to consume while in physical therapy due to its systemic anti-inflammatory properties. Concentrated cherry juice is another great systemic anti-inflammatory with its rich antioxidants, anthocyanin and melatonin. Magnesium helps with nerve conduction and muscle contraction, especially when used with vitamin D. Everyone these days seems to have a vitamin D deficiency and are put on large amounts of vitamin D supplements with very little improvement in blood work levels. Vitamin D cannot be converted without magnesium in the system so adding either magnesium supplements or magnesium rich foods to your diet will help with not only nerve conduction but also bone growth. Of course no new supplements or vitamins should be added or changed without your physician's supervision.

Tell me a little bit about the difference between an acidic and alkaline pH?

Your body is very sensitive to pH changes in the body and likes to stay at a comfortable 7.4 pH balance for optimal function. Our diets can throw off this balance and lead to impaired healing. A body that has a more acidic pH (<7.4) can have more joint pain, chronic fatigue and osteoporosis. Sounds like a lot of us, and that's because our diets are filled with less fruits and veggies and more meats and dairy than we need. A more alkaline diet will bring your body back to our happy pH balance. The vast majority of the Westernized world is dealing with an acidic body and could benefit from a more alkaline diet.

Can you recommend any resources to find out more information about this?

Some great resources on what foods are acidic and which are alkaline are: www.acidalkalinediet.com or http://rense.com/1.mpicons/acidalka.htm

For more information on the role of diet and healing the body, Cheryl Wardlaw has written a great resource, Taming Pain: Lessons from the Trenches, that explains pain in a way everyone can understand.

"Ali has helped me lose 32lbs to date...and added 10 yards to my drive..."

"Before deciding to work with Ali Gilbert on my nutrition and weight loss, I felt somewhat embarrassed about my appearance. Even as a successful and confident professional, it affected a few aspects of how interacted with people and the way I thought I was being perceived.

I felt tired, lacked energy and struggled with mobility. My goal was simple, to cut weight and get back to my original healthy weight. Ali advised me that we weren't necessarily looking for a specific number on the scale, but more of a healthy feeling and physique.

To begin, Ali had me send her 3 days' worth of meal consumption which gave her the important information she needed to create my individual plan. We did everything online and while it wasn't always easy. Ali was there for me every single step of the way throughout the entire process until I reached my goal.

Some of the most significant improvements I have made along the way are increased energy levels and mobility. My range of motion has increased by approximately 20%. I can now get to the top of my swing without any strain in thoracic rotation. My carry distance has improved by 10 yards with my driver to 290yds on average, along with 4mph of club head speed with my driver bringing it up to 118mph.

Ali has helped me lose 32lbs to date. (225 lbs (starting) 205 lbs (8 weeks) 198 lbs (12 weeks) 193 lbs (14 weeks)

It was so much fun to see the progress. Everyone, including members at my club are so impressed and very complimentary. I couldn't have done this without Ali. If you really want to make a change in your game, health or lifestyle I highly recommend that you contact Ali and the team at Elite Health Services."
