Burma Announces Charges, Mass Arrests in Sectarian Violence

Praise God for...

1. An opportunity to preach the Gospel in the historic Immanuel Baptist Church,  downtown Yangon. Two to three dozen people responded to Tim's invitation to seek God's forgiveness and help to get back on their feet again, spiritually.

2. Many moments in our classes when the Holy Spirit touches the students in meaningful ways in the course of teaching, discussion, or prayer.

3. A translator for the Spirit-Led Leader material into Burmese! He expects to complete the translation of the book in the first quarter of 2014.

4. So many opportunities to show Christ's love to very poor, at-risk youth in Yangon

5. Many opportunities to talk in depth with individual faculty, staff, and students

Pray With Us for...

1. Peaceful resolution of the conflicts between Buddhists and Rohingya Muslims.

2. Protection for Christians as well as Muslims, especially in Rakhine State, where some Buddhist extremists are already threatening to extend their efforts to purify their state beyond Muslims to targeting Christians as well

3. A God-honoring, Christ-centered celebration of 200 years since Adoniram Judson brought the Gospel to Myanmar (Burma) in 1813. 25,000 people are expected to participate in the four-day event, December 5-8.

4. Granting of government permit for faculty housing on MIT campus, after unexplained months of waiting

5. Open doors to share Jesus and Christ's love in effective ways with at-risk youth and others we meet and work with in Yangon.

6. God's intervention in Eastern Congo, where fighting continues and thousands of people are displaced and suffering

7. Completion of translation of Spirit-Led Leader book into Khmer language

Here in Myanmar, we are overflowing with gratitude this Thanksgiving.  There are so many positive signs of change and new openness in the country, and we see God at work in many ways.

Yet, at the same time, not all is well. The tensions between Buddhists and Muslims, for example, continue to flare into violence, often without warning. Since June 2012, 240 people have been killed, with new incidents of random violence every month or so. 240,000 people have been displaced, resulting in even greater poverty and distress, especially for the million or so Rohingya Muslims who generally have no means of becoming citizens or ameliorating their situation.

Tim teaching 75 New Testament Theology students

In our ministries, our focus is on preparing theological students to serve in ministry over the next 40 years, and on equipping indigenous leaders to address the many challenges in Myanmar. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to do leadership development, but only the Myanmar people themselves can do the critical work of building up the church and spearheading efforts to bring the love and peace of Christ throughout the nation.

This past month, we have been teaching our four, semester long classes at the Myanmar Institute of Theology (MIT).  Jill continues to teach her class on prayer, and I am teaching New Testament Theology, an advanced level exegetical class, and Spirit-led Living.

One of the highlights of the month was preaching at the historic, Immanuel Baptist Church, founded by Adoniram Judson himself nearly 200 years ago, in downtown Yangon.

We are thrilled with all that God is doing, but we are also cognizant of the ongoing risks and struggles that affect everyone, including us. We serve with a daily awareness of our continual need for God's help and yours. Your ongoing prayers and financial support are deeply appreciated and needed. Thank you.

YangonYouth Ministry Update

So Many Opportunities to Share God's Love!

They visit us at our apartment. We visit them at their homes. We meet unexpectedly on the street. They show up unexpectedly at our door. Our relationships with various at-risk youth here in Yangon continue to deepen, and the opportunities to show Christ's love continue to multiply.

Youth acting out Luke 7:36-50

We spend our time with them talking, giving swimming lessons, taking someone to a health clinic, shopping for clothes, teaching photography skills, confronting a lie, sharing "gratitudes" before the meal prayer, listening to their challenges, drawing pictures, teaching each other English and Burmese, sharing highs and low from the day, or simply laughing together.

The joy in our hearts tell us how much we have come to cherish them and our relationships with each one. The light in their eyes and smiles on their faces tell us over and over again how deeply they appreciate our love and involvement in their lives. Please pray that God will draw them close to Christ, and help them to know Jesus as we do. Pray that they may have the kind of faith, hope, and love that will go far beyond what we can offer personally, and that will ground them in solid relationship with God for the rest of their lives.
