South for the Winter
From Marga Zacky:  REPLY
My cousin will be visiting over the holiday season and we are planning a vacation in the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area. We would like to rent a house or condo in a safe area for six adults, ages 36 and up, including two couples and a mother and a daughter. Proximity to the beach is optional. We prefer traveling over tanning and would like to visit as many places as we can in South Florida. If you have any recommendations for accommodations, restaurants and things to see and do, please contact us. Thank you!

By the Numbers
From Aliette Moran:  REPLY
I need to find a CPA in the South Miami/Coral Gables area to complete my business and personal taxes. I would like to find someone with big firm experience, but who is at a smaller firm that offers flat rate billing. Your recommendations will be very helpful.

Fatherly Bonds
From Team JAB
JABBERS, we asked you to tell us about the greatest gifts your father ever gave to you. In this tribute to Father's Day, we share your thoughtful and amusing responses.

Boo Zamek says, "Every Christmas when my sister Morgan and I were growing up, what we looked forward to most - even more than the surprises Santa had left under the tree - was the "love letter" from Dad we knew we'd find in our stockings. We woke up every Christmas at or before dawn, raced down the stairs, and tore in to our stockings to read our letters. Dad hand-wrote a special one for each of us every year and they were incredible. (My dad is a very talented writer and - sorry Dad - is a pretty mushy guy.) Both Morgan and I have saved all the letters to share with our children someday. Thank you, Dad!"

Megan Peffers
says, "My father is an avid sports fan. I remember as a child, he would take my brother and me to every home baseball game, and would spend hours with us on the weekends playing H-O-R-S-E and kickball. Watching games with him on television was as much fun as going to the movies. It's because of my dad and this love of sports I inherited, that I was voted "the coolest girl" in seventh grade by all of the boys in the class! The only other person who is as grateful as I am for the this gift is my husband. Happy Father's Day, Daddy!"

Carlo Costas says, "My father, Carlo Sr., had a way of expanding the minds of those around him with thoughts of growth and adventure ... and big thoughts led to big actions! Grandiose plans (and at least two small businesses) were often made after people had spoken with him. I think it's important that we inspire each other to keep "thinking big," and I try to incorporate that into my life daily."

Angel O'Connell
says
, "Dad taught my sisters and me all of the same life-skills he would have taught to a son. Because of my dad, there isn't anything that we can't fix around the house! This gift has saved us not only money on having to hire plumbers or handymen, but several arguments with our spouses."

Lissa Dorsey says, "The greatest gift I inherited from my father was my love for writing. Growing up, my father always had a pen and paper in his hand. Whether it was a poem, short story or a speech he was preparing, he always read his writings to me and asked for my input. It's because of him that I started keeping a journal at a very young age, and developed a passion for writing. And my writing skills have served me well in life: as an English major in college, as an attorney, and as the Managing Editor for JustAskBoo Palm Beach ~ I have a job I love where I write all day. Thanks Dad!"

Katie Menendez
says, "It took me a long time to appreciate it, but my father's greatest gift to me was his dark, good looks. As a child I desperately wanted to look like my mother and sister, but now when I look in the mirror I see all of his strength and character looking back at me through the beautiful brown eyes I inherited."

Language Learners
From Mariana Rodriguez:  REPLY
I would like my family (my husband, my kids and me) to learn a new language besides Spanish and English. I prefer one that will help my children, ages five and seven, throughout their lives and my husband in his career. If you have suggestions on a language and/or know of a teacher who can come to our home, please let me know.

The New Ashley Cusack

From Ashley Cusack:  REPLY

I hope you've noticed my new "look." It has been up and running on JustAskBoo, in The Miami Herald, on my website and on all of my other printed advertising. I was ready for a fresh and refined look and think I got it. Hot off the press are my new signs! Keep an eye out for them around town (hopefully more and more!). They stand out nicely with my signature "Ashley Cusack" blue and the EWM red. And, of course, if you're in the market for selling, I would love to have the opportunity to hang one in front of your home too! To learn more, visit my website HERE.*

Pumped Up
From Michelle Hernandez:  REPLY
Is there a company you highly recommend to repair pool pumps? Thanks for your suggestions!

It's Time to Get Rid of the Allergens!
From Netty Parente:  REPLY
Whether it's pollen, dust, dust mites or cat dander, you just want them out of your house. While regular vacuuming and dusting are important, nothing gets the culprits out of your home like OxyCleanFresh® carpet, floor and upholstery cleaning services. Carpets and upholstery are vital to a healthy home. They act like giant magnets and filters for allergens and other particles, catching them in the fibers which help to keep your air quality healthier. However, they must be maintained and refreshed regularly so that they keep doing their job. To learn more about our "Green Difference," click HERE for more information.*

Tile Style
From Nancy Ware:  REPLY
I am on the hunt for a great outdoor patio tile that won't look dirty all the time. Is there anything you recommend?

Happy Birthday Victoria Assa!

Sleepless in South Miami
From Anonymous:  REPLY
My four-and-a-half-year-old daughter has been having trouble sleeping for years. The issues she initially exhibited have changed over the years from trouble at bed time (screaming for hours) to waking up multiple times in the middle of the night. She does initially fall asleep in her own bed but often wakes up very early in the night before we're asleep and insists on sleeping on the floor in our room. The situation is now completely disruptive to our whole family since she refuses to sleep alone and we have no privacy or space from her. We have taken her to a child psychologist who labeled her with major separation anxiety. The therapist suggested she sleep on our floor (despite my objection) so that everyone can get more rest, but I am concerned that we are exacerbating the situation by encouraging her habits. Have you ever dealt with anything like this? If so, is there another therapist or healthcare professional I should speak with? Your suggestions and advice are desperately needed. Thank you!

Talk it Over
From Anonymous:  REPLY
My three-and-a-half-year-old son has a bit of a speech delay and I am growing concerned. Do you know of a speech therapist in the South Miami, Coral Gables, Coconut Grove or Pinecrest area who can help? I greatly appreciate your replies.

LemonAid
From Team JAB
We want to thank all of the JABBERS who, after reading last week's newsletter, joined Team JAB in celebrating National Lemonade Days. We heard from JABBERS who braved this weekend's temperamental weather to set up a stand and raise funds for childhood cancer research, and shared their updates and photos with us by email and social media.

JABBERS and Mini-JABBERS across South Florida raised hundreds of dollars one cup at a time. The updates we received are amazing:

  • JABBERS Shari Byrd, Allison Langer and Michelle Segal Janson raised an easy $131 by setting up their stand on the sidelines of a kids' soccer game in a local park on a hot afternoon.
  • Pinecrest business Joanna's Marketplace hosted their stand in the memory of Bella Rodriguez-Torres, and matched the more than $160 raised in lemonade sales over two days with a corporate donation.  They will continue to sell lemonade in-store until they reach their fundraising goal of $500.
  • JAB Palm Beach Managing Editor Lissa Dorsey raised $138 outside of her West Palm home, and wrote about it in yesterday's issue.

It's not too late to participate, JABBERS! Click HERE or text LEMONADE E113000 to 85944 to donate. Send your updates and pictures of last weekend's stand to us by email. And keep checking HERE to see photos of JABBERS in action. Happy JABBING!
