June 2013

Greetings!

My husband and I recently visited my parents out of state. Mom lives in a nursing home and her daily activities are often orchestrated by the Activities Director or whoever might be visiting at the time. We sometimes bring our hymnal to sing songs together with her or I'll open up my laptop to show her the latest pictures of her grandkids or great grandchildren.

It dawned on me during our recent visit that since mom had her first stroke 11 years ago, time has stood still for her mentally. Technology such as iPods, iPads, SmartPhones, and computerized appliances are completely foreign to her. She is unaware of the speed at which the world has changed.  It's almost refreshing.

Technology is constantly changing. Do you ever feel like you might not be able to keep up with everything?  Because I rely on the advice and recommendations of others when it comes to upgrading technology or software, I thought I would share my favorite apps in this month's newsletter in hopes you'll find it informative and helpful.

Warmly,

Maximizing Technology

Technology is supposed to help us be more efficient, get more done and save time. But sometimes the headaches encountered with checking my email or spending time with technical support seems to get in the way of increasing my productivity.

If you have a SmartPhone, you've got some real opportunities at your fingertips to help you manage life. Here are some of my favorite apps. Most, if not all of these, were free:

MyShopi

Never be without "the list" again.  This app allows me to create
and manage lists for all the places I shop. i.e. Groceries, Target, Sam's Club, etc.  As I think of things I need to pick up, I simply add them to my list. I can even scan an item's bar code and it will automatically populate. It also allows you to email or text your list to someone else who might be helping you run your errands!

HootSuite

This app allows you to view more than one social media site at a time. For example, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.

White Noise Lite

Being able to play white noise allows me a better night's sleep when I'm traveling or when someone, who shall go unnamed, is snoring. This app has several options such as airplane, beach, clock, chimes, crickets, fan, rain, thunder and train.

Mint.com

This intuitive software program connects your accounts all in one place and automatically organizes your spending into categories which allows you to stay on budget and avoid surprises at the end of the month.

Genius Scan

This app turns your phone into a pocket scanner. It enables you to quickly scan documents on the go and email the scans as a JPEG or a PDF.

PaperKarma

I'm all for cutting down on junk mail but usually don't take the time to contact a company to get off their lists. Now it's as easy as taking a photo with your phone.  PaperKarma then contacts the sender to add you to their "Do not mail" list.

Retail Me Not Coupons
My kids first told me about this one and I've used it on several occasions, including buying doors at Menards!  You simply enter the name of the store or restaurant you're shopping at and the app will show you both the in-store and online specials that are available.
Sleep better with the Cloud

I preach this all the time. You absolutely must be backing up your computer files and digital photos. You have several options, including using a thumb drive or external hard drive. But unless you store these in a fire-proof safe or safety deposit box, your information will still be at risk.  That's why I believe in backing up to "the cloud", using a service such as Carbonite.  I've been with Carbonite for over five years. They are reputable, reliable and safe.

There are many other "cloud" service providers. Here are a few of the most well-known:

      • Dropbox
      • Mozy
      • Rackspace
      • Quantum
      • Google
