Welcome to Our Lady of Mount Carmel! Crusader Connection is a monthly newsletter that outlines upcoming events and explains policies to our newest Crusaders. Please see this month's details below.
Ongoing Volunteer Opportunity - Tuesday Helpers
Each Tuesday, parents gather in the cafeteria at OLMC School to help teachers prepare lessons and projects for the classroom. This involves laminating, cutting out figures, tearing out workbook pages, etc. You are invited to come after carpool for an hour or two to help the teachers with this extra miscellaneous work, while visiting with other parents from the school. Please call Julie Hill in the front office or Shari Pedonesi if you have any questions, or just show up on Tuesday morning after carpool.
October 11th Conferences
Each year at the first midpoint of the first trimester the School is closed for classes to make time for parent teacher conferences. We schedule conferences so that parents with multiple children at the school can see all the teachers consecutively. Please note that the conferences are brief and provide an opportunity to look at the interim report with the teacher and perhaps set a few goals. Should there be issues that require more than this brief amount of time, please plan simply to schedule a follow up conference or phone call for another day.
For 1st - 4th grade students: The interim report cards will be available at the conference time and you will be able to take them home.
For 5-8 grade students: Because these grades are posted regularly on Edline, a printout of all grades will not be provided on a report card until the end of the trimester.
At the middle school level, conferences are not automatically scheduled for each student, but are made upon request by the teachers or the parents.
October 15, 16, 18 Picture Day
On individual student picture days (15-16) Students are invited to wear their Mass day uniform or to dress in their Sunday best. This applies only to the day which the class is assigned to have pictures taken or on picture make up day. On class picture day, usually scheduled on a Friday, students are to wear their Mass day uniform. Please see the most recent edition of Our Lady's Word for details on dates for each class: see Our Lady's Word
October 18th Fall Festival & Marriage Enrichment The Fall Festival is a simple family picnic to celebrate back-to-school in the fall. Eighth grade students will host indoor games and activities for children, and athletic equipment will be set up outside for some additional team sport games. All families are welcome to attend. Please see the flyer on edline and RSVP to Julie Nguyen. Following the picnic, the parish is offering a new Marriage Enrichment evening with speaker Father Phil Dabney, beginning at 7:00 at St. Michael's Hall. Babysitting is available.
October 24th Living Rosary
October is celebrated in the Church as the Month of the Rosary and it is an opportunity to teach and re-teach the mysteries of the rosary, which help us to meditate on and imitate the life of Jesus Christ. Toward the end of the month the school community gathers in the afternoon before dismissal and prays the rosary together. Students from each classroom are asked to lead one of the prayers. They sit in the shape of a rosary and light a candle which represents a bead of the rosary. The rest of the class and many parents, sit throughout the gym and join in prayer. This generally ends around 2:40pm, at which time the students return to their classrooms for a regular dismissal. As with other afternoon events and parties (with few exceptions), we do ask that the children return to their classrooms with their teachers rather than leave directly with the parents. This ensures that we have proper supervision and safety measures in place at a time when so many extra people are in the building with us. We invite you to join us!
October 29th Fall Sports Banquet
Following each athletic season, athletes and their families are invited to look back at the lessons and successes of the season. The coaches share some reflections and offer recognition and awards to the athletes. This will be held in the gym and cafeteria. Parents of athletes should be contacted directly by the coaches or the athletic director for more information.
November 1st All Saints Day Hall of Saints and Parties
Please join us for Mass on All Saints Day at the regular 8:15 school Mass. Following Mass the fourth grade puts on the "Hall of Saints" for which each student dresses like his/her saint and shares the autobiography. This begins shortly after Mass and lasts about an hour. All Saints Day is also a day of afternoon parties for grades Pk-5. Parties begin around 2:00. The homeroom parent for your child's class should contact you with details and to ask help with supervising activities and/or baking treats.
