Greetings,
You've probably said this to people you know:
Don't use unsecure public Wi-Fi hotspots.
You can tell people their login credentials will be exposed, their email and Facebook pages can be accessed, and recite all the warnings. Do they pay attention? If not, perhaps this straightforward description of what Eric Geier PC World contributing writer could easily see while on Wi-Fi at a local coffee shop will help.
All the best to you,
Beryl Morimoto

Mary Meeker on Internet Trends
In case you missed it, Mary Meeker gave her 20th annual Internet Trends Report on May 27, 2015. She is a partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, a prominent Silicon Valley venture capital firm. Her report has become a "must read" for most people in technology. Many of the slides contain facts but no surprises. She speaks of messaging, drones, design concepts, regulation, and of course, mobility. The value she offers is making the connections between concepts and trends to help us find our own relationships to the impact of changing technology. You may view all 195 original slides here.

LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner expresses a comment we are hearing more frequently from the tech industry: "There is a widening skills gap where the existing workforce has been educated and trained to obtain the jobs of yesterday and not the jobs of today and tomorrow." While some people have difficulty finding jobs, employers have trouble filling jobs with appropriately skilled individuals. Brian Solis looks at this dilemma and says, "Training and education is one way to address this." At PCATT, we believe in training and continuing education.

13th Annual PCATT IT Symposium
Many thanks for the educators who attended the PCATT IT Symposium. There were several excellent keynote presentations and a number of breakout sessions. Topics included security, virtual networking, mobile apps, IPv6, GIS, RAT, social media, and more.
We love seeing our local talent shine and that's exactly what we saw with Jason Leigh. Dr. Leigh is the Director of the Laboratory for Advanced Visualization & Applications (LAVA) and Professor of ICS at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. Read more.

Active educators affiliated with schools from K through college had a unique opportunity at the PCATT Apple Summer Institute held in May. These teachers and technical specialists participated in creative group activities for building meaningful learning experiences for students, facilitated by experts in Apple Education. The objective was to learn new teaching strategies through experiences as the learner. Rather than focus and worry about technology, the emphasis is on paying attention to the learning process. The outcomes were impressive. Our students are in good hands with these enthusiastic and forward-thinking educators.

Java Turned 20!
It's hard to believe it's been 20 years of Java. Besides longevity, Java continues to be a useful and popular programming language listed first in the TIOBE Programming Community index. The ever-popular introductory Java course is currently running at PCATT with a second level to be scheduled in late August. This quote from jClarity CEO Martijn Verburg says it all: "Java directly or indirectly touches just about every human on this planet. It is the glue that allows mobile health and banking in remote areas of the world, entertains millions with games such as Minecraft, and drives the economic engine of our global markets." -Source

"Why $71B Wasn't Enough To Fix Enterprise Security"
Although this title speaks of enterprise, security concerns impact companies both large and small. Ajay Arora, CEO and Founder of Vera, suggests we start by recognizing fundamental realities about security and work backwards.
-There Is No Perimeter
-Security Is A Bottom-Up Problem
-Above All Else, Protect the Data
-Every Company Must Become A Security Company
What do you think?
Many of you are concerned; we know because we filled our most recent CISSP course that started a few weeks ago. Watch for more Security training topics at PCATT.

What will you be doing this summer? Some at PCATT are diving into data science while others are looking at new security topics. Virtualization updates are also on our schedule. Call us nerds and geeks; to us those are compliments more than labels. If you like learning as much as we do, take a look at PCATT courses starting in June. If you don't find what you want, tell us via email or phone (808 845-9464).

Regular readers know we end with something a bit off-beat. Hope you find these emails presented by Tripp and Tyler as amusing as we did: "Email in Real Life".
