September eZine 2014

Greetings,

I recently joined several Meetup groups and it's been exciting to see the tech activities happening in Hawaii. Not all of the events are in person. The "Lucky We Code Hawaii" group is hosting a live, virtual event on October 9, "Intro to Web Development Free Q&A and Live Coding". There are tech-focused Meetup groups as well as many other Hawaii Meetups with interests ranging from hiking to karaoke to real estate investors. Hope you are able to take advantage of the many ways to network and learn.

Wishing you all the best.

Read Before You Click

The Microsoft Windows Insider Program allows a technical preview of Windows 10. It's a great concept where "Insiders" provide feedback to Microsoft directly through a Feedback app in the product. This is a developing stage so Microsoft wants to gather a lot of information about you and how you are using the product. As with anything, read before you click "agree".

Beware of the Person Bearing Malasadas and Manapua

Blogger Tom Olzak says human behavior is the weakest link in any security system and that's why social engineering works. What does social engineering look like? How can you prevent it? There are answers in Social Engineering: The Basics, a good article from December 2012 with relevance for today. The most important piece is employee awareness and training. If you'd like to educate your employees to prevent social engineering, PCATT can do that.

What Do CIOs Earn?

image Networkworld.com

Have you ever wondered how much a CIO really earns? This article at Network World will tell you. Topping the list is Filippo Passerini, Proctor and Gamble Group President and CIO at $5 million, of which $837,500 was salary, $834,462 bonus, $2.7 in equity awards, $528,000 pension value, and $66,932 in perks and other compensation. Whew! The average salary range for CIOs is between $153,000 and $246,750. Obviously, salaries are just the beginning of the compensation package. You may read more and see other CIOs through NetworkWorld; registration is required.

Following World Technology Trends

For those of us in technology, it's especially important to be informed about future trends. The World Economic Forum's Global Agenda Council on Emerging Technologies has a good list that takes a humanitarian, world view. The Council identified ten new technologies that could reshape our society. You may also want to view their 2013 predictions. As always, the comments are often as interesting as the predictions.

Unity - A New Experience

PCATT Software Engineer, Monir Hodges, attended the Unity presentation at Iolani School's Sullivan Center. "Unity is a tool for developing interactive content and deploying it anywhere. Whether you're creating games, architectural walk-throughs, online training simulations, or interactive art, Unity is the tool that will allow you to quickly achieve stunning results." Monir shares her experience about learning to use the software. You'll see why PCATT instructors are great. In addition to their love of technology, they have a passion for learning and teaching.

Jobs

Select IT Jobs

A frequent inquiry received at PCATT is about jobs - employers looking for trained employees and folks looking for jobs. The three sites we refer people to are the following:

Tech Jobs Hawaii (affiliated with HTDC)

Tech Hui

HireNet Hawaii

These sites are free to use and provide a wealth of information beyond jobs.

Assured Interoperability

TechNet 2012

"Assured Interoperability' is the theme for the annual AFCEA TechNet Asia Pacific conference. Although it focuses on defense and government technology, there is something for everyone in tech. The conference will be held at the Hilton Hawaiian Village from December 9 through 11. Save the dates.

"Is More Education in the Works?"

At PCATT, we certainly hope more education is in your plans, whether you go back to school or attend short-term training with us. It seems it's a trend for small business owners and those interested in furthering their careers to turn to education.

You'll find the PCATT schedule for the month of October here and future courses will be listed on the website. We can provide customized scheduling if you have sufficient numbers of people to run your own course. Let us know how we can help you meet your training needs.

And Finally...

the evolution of the desk by the harvard innovation lab

You know we end with something a bit off-beat and hopefully entertaining. The Harvard Innovation Lab recreated a typical desk from 1980 with actual items such as a rolodex, a Polaroid camera, yellow pages of the phone book, and a Macintosh classic (I had one of those). They take that desk through 2014. Sigh, my desk will never look like 2014.
