August eZine 2014

Greetings,

Did you know you could earn college credit based on experience or training outside a credit course? The University of Hawaii community colleges offers four types of assessment:

            Equivalency Exam

            Credit by Exam

            Portfolio-Based Assessment

            Credit for Non-Collegiate Sponsored Education

If this is of interest to you, more info is available at the University of Hawaii community college website or you may contact coordinator Barbara Belle.

All the best to you,

Beryl Morimoto

VMWorld 2014

At PCATT, it's important for us to keep up with the latest in the technologies we teach. Mario Mediati attended VMWorld and shared interesting insights with us about what's happening with VMware and virtualization in general. Several announcements were made in the general session of VMWorld by VMware CEO, Pat Gelsinger, which indicate a shift in the way things are being done.

"The 10 most terrifying security nightmares"

No PCATT eZine is complete without mentioning security. This comes from Black Hat and Def Con where Brad Chacos, senior writer for PCWorld, has selected truly scary security scenarios. For example, researcher Ruben Santamarta says he can hack into satellite communications through aircraft entertainment systems to impact navigation and safety. Each one of the scenarios will give you a good scare.
"10 Free Online Courses That Every Professional Should Check Out"

You may not agree that all these courses are needed by professionals but this is an interesting list with links to free courses. They're all from the Khan Academy because the person who was asked what every professional should know is Salman Khan, founder and executive director of the Khan Academy. The 48 minute interview with Elon Musk is engaging and interesting.

2014 Hawaii Small Business Fair

Over 150 small business owners and employees attended the 2014 Hawaii Small Business Fair in August held at Honolulu Community College. We are grateful to the many organizations and businesses that supported the event. Twenty-three free sessions were offered, one of which was presented by one of our own Monir Hodges, Professor and Software Engineer, on how mobile apps can be used as a small business marketing tool. Watch for details on this new course in our next PCATT schedule.
