July eZine 2014

Greetings,

I've been using Viber, a free IM-VoIP platform, to communicate with a mainland friend on a limited budget and a not-so-robust smart phone plan. She travels internationally and Viber keeps us connected. I was surprised to hear Viber is known for its "killer encryption" and may be used by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). Talmon Marco, one of the co-founders, still runs Viber from his office in Tel Aviv. You never know about technology. I learn something new every day and hope you do too.

All the best,

Jeremiah Owyang on the Collaborative Economy

The Chief Catalyst at Crowd Companies, Jeremiah Owyang, is focused on his passion for the Collaborative Economy. In his words, "The Collaborative Economy is an economic movement that empowers people to get what they want in the physical world from each other." What makes this possible is that people are now self-reliant, tech savvy, connected, and purpose-driven. Companies must be able to respond to this changed and ever changing environment by being more innovative and agile, empowering their employees and customers to participate in their processes. If we're not operating in this way, we can possibly be out of business. If you read one thing today, you may want to read about Crowd Companies.
The Dangers of Technological Unemployment

Thomas Frey is a well-regarded futurist who analyzes difficult topics, specifically as they relate to technology. One of these topics is how technology requires new skills as people lose one job and must gain appropriate skills to move to a new one. With the rapid pace of changing technologies, businesses need employees with new talent in just months notice. Training providers such as Udacity offer NanoDegrees and DaVinci has a Micro College. PCATT aims to be a quick skill upgrade solution for companies in Hawaii. We welcome you to communicate with us and hope you're willing to talk with us when we reach out to determine your training needs.
What Security Professionals Are Saying

4,800 worldwide IT and security practitioners were surveyed by the Ponemon Institute and it's clear communication is lacking between the front line and business management resulting in poor understanding of security threats and inadequate budget funding. 29% would like to "do a complete overhaul of their current enterprise security system" if they had the resources. The most frightening statistic is 76% of respondents said they knew intellectual property and customer data were compromised by insiders. Although half of the corporations surveyed provide formal cybersecurity training, at PCATT, we think that's not enough.

Making the Internet More Meaningful

The Meaningful Content Fund was started by Sharethrough, an advertising company, to highlight quality content on the Web. Their Board of Advisors developed criteria for content selection and use their $1 million fund to feature three to five stories or films each week. You can read content they've selected and learn more about the Meaningful Content Fund if you're curious.
