June eZine 2014

Greetings,

I was recently at Stanford University in Palo Alto at a conference to learn to maximize the use of our new registration system. It was a great conference with side benefits that included a visit to the Googleplex and seeing a Google self-driving car on the road. It's good to get out, to learn new things, and experience best practices quality examples like Stanford and Google. At PCATT, we're always learning.

All the best to you,

Can Innovation and Creativity be Taught?

Tina Seelig, Executive Director of the Stanford Technology Ventures Program, says yes. The SVForum honored her with one of the 2014 Visionary Awards. Her global program operates at the Stanford School of Engineering to teach students how to be entrepreneurial, not necessarily to start companies although many have, but to think innovatively and take risks, skills required to succeed in current tech environments. You may take advantage of over 3,000 free lectures available through Stanford University's Entrepreneurship Corner.

We've posted salary surveys in the past but this one from Robert Half Technology is especially good. It starts with a management perspective on how to attract and retain the best employees. The depth of salary detail by types of jobs is useful and a valuable part of this IT Salary Guide is the variance by state. You'll find the pay variance for Hawaii on page 19 of the download. There's a glossary of job descriptions if you're looking to change careers, advance or just learn new skills.
What Programming Language Should I Learn?
Image: tufts.edu

This is a question callers frequently ask us at PCATT. Will Little, co-founder and CEO of Code Fellows, has definite opinions about this ("Learn JavaScript" he says) in his guest post written for Venture Beat. Blog comments suggest other ideas such as Lisp, Clojure, PHP, learning how to learn programming languages, and a data driven response citing an article written for sitepoint by Craig Buckler, Contributing Editor. In the end, which programming language you select depends on what you want to do and your abilities.
Where to Learn to Program

The good news is there are many options to learn to code, one of which was announced this past week by Google and c<>de school. To create opportunities and to close the gender gap, Google is paying for three months of training. Gregg Pollack, CEO of the c<>de school, clarifies the offer and provides links in his blog should you want to apply for this opportunity if you did not attend I/O.
Questions to Ask Your Cloud Provider
Image: blogs.oracle.com

Whether you're looking for a cloud provider or evaluating your current one, there are questions you should ask in the areas of data security, completeness, and social, mobile, and analytics. Although there is a bit of overlap, the combination of these two lists, one from Oracle and the other from the Onyx Group, are good places to start developing your list of questions.

"10 hot cloud computing skills"

What's clear in the "cloud computing" work sphere is summarized in one sentence from Mary K. Pratt: "Just as there's no single path to cloud expertise, there's no single skill that defines it, either." She lists 10 "mix-and-match skills" for cloud computing and discusses how cloud computing is changing IT employment.
