Greetings,

An opinion piece written by Baron Concors, CIO at Yum! Restaurants International, caught my attention. He wrote about the new role for IT as the generator of innovative ideas. Traditional tasks such as keeping the email system operational and developing and implementing security policies are taken for granted. He says, "Success is now measured by what we are doing to drive the business and the bottom line. What operational efficiencies can we deliver through technology? What incremental profits do we enable?" Now that's worth considering.

All the best,

Beryl Morimoto

Program Manager

TechNet Asia Pacific

TechNet 2012 There are a lot of changes this year with AFCEA's TechNet Asia Pacific 2013 Conference.

  • Dates changed from November to December 3 through 5
  • Location changed from the Sheraton Waikiki to the Hilton Hawaiian Village
  • Opportunity to earn CEUs to sustain your DoD 8570.01-M

This event continually amazes with the breadth of technology and opportunities to speak directly with representatives from various companies. PCATT is a constant. Look for us at TechNet Asia Pacific to get your computer calendar for 2014. Register here. We'll be looking for you.

Test Drive VMware Products

Seems nothing is free these days but here's a way to test drive VMware products with online hands-on labs (for FREE). These labs were successfully introduced at VMworld this year. If you like what you see and need additional training, check out the PCATT schedule. We do our own VMware training and also host VMware's training at PCATT.

For the CIO on Managing People

Fred Wilson is an Engineer and co-founder of Union Square Ventures. He says managing people is like managing technical systems. He shares his "eight rules for managing both computer systems and people systems--along with the language we use to talk about this concept in the world of people systems." This is helpful framing for engineers who manage people.
Solar Technology for Instructors
Bryan Bass representing Solmetric gave an overview of solar analysis products.
Good things are happening between the sunny states of Hawaii and California.

The Solar Instructor Training Network (SITN) is a program for the California-Hawaii region, funded by a grant from Federal Department of Energy. Our local goal is to train instructors throughout the state of Hawaii in advances in energy technology through a series of inter-related curricula. The partnership between the states has led to a productive sharing of resources and knowledge. Continue reading on the PCATT Hawaii Blog.

Hot IT Skills for 2014

computerworld logo People ask us all the time about "hot IT skills"To answer that, we like the results of a recent survey conducted by ComputerWorld which reports the skills employers want to hire in 2014. Take a look at the chart that indicates the skills most difficult to hire and also note the soft skills wanted by employers. We invite you to make PCATT your place for learning.
