Greetings!

There are moments I find myself saying, "I'm not a Techie" because there are people, like my co-workers, who are much more knowledgeable and technical than myself. Recently, I read an Inc. article written by Jessica Stillman, "Never Say 'I'm Not Technical' Again." The article revolves around the Internet and informs us the only thing preventing us from being technical is ourselves. At the end of the article, the following question is posed: "What tech skill would you learn if you just believed you could?" Think about the possibilities, then take action. If you are looking to expand your technical skills, make PCATT your educational destination. You are always welcomed here.

All the best,

Beryl Morimoto

Do You Know Ang Cui?

Ang Cui is a nice PhD student who hacks into IP phones, printers, webcams, routers, and more... because he can. Ang is not destructive or malicious; he wants to help companies strengthen their security and identify potential problems. As you read this article, you may be alarmed, but it is meant to raise awareness about potential security problems and being receptive to what needs to be done. Read the following article, "You're Being Watched-And Not Just By the Government" written by Keith Collins for Medium. Afterwards you'll feel compelled to purchase his product, Symbiote.

CCNA Exam Certification Changes

If you were thinking about obtaining your CCNA certifications, we suggest you carefully review the upcoming changes. The final day to test for some of the CCNA certification exams is Monday, September 30, 2013. There will be changes to the exam content, as well as the exam sequence structure. Participants currently taking the CCNA 4 course at PCATT will be contracted for a bridge review.

Here is a resource from networking-forum and a reference from Cisco for you to review.

Twenty Critical Security Controls for Effective Cyber Defense SANS

SANS, a respected resource for security, has posted a good list with details on critical security controls.  Also of value is their Security Trends Blog which will keep you up to date as new threats arise and things change. We will post these on the PCATT Facebook page and encourage you to share other resources on our Facebook timeline.

Have you ever wondered what other employees in your career field earn and how satisfied they were with their work? If this interests you, research PayScale chart featuring Fortune 500 companies and listed in order of median pay. For example, Microsoft employees are a median age of 33 years old, have worked for Microsoft for 4 years, earn $109,000 and 69% of the employees experience high job satisfaction. Whereas Apple employees are slightly younger at a median of 31 years old, have a shorter job tenure at 2 years, earn less than $83,100 annual salary and 76% of employees experience high job satisfaction. Intelligent Energy Systems

Smart Grid LCC Bill Labby
Participants learn with hands-on equipment at Leeward Community College

What if we created training in real time while a new technology is developed. That's what is happening at PCATT through a grant funded by the U.S. Department of Energy in the area of Intelligent Energy Systems, also known as Smart Grid. The curriculum is being developed in partnership with HECO,  Siemens Industry, Inc., and the University of Hawaii Community Colleges. First to be trained will be the first users which include HECO with the intent to share the training with all island utilities. To prepare for a trained workforce, both continuing education non-credit training and a 2-year degree program will be offered to the public at a later date. Read more in the PCATT blog.
