Barker Fairley
By Paul Duval (1980)

Barker Fairley was a British-Canadian painter and scholar of art and literature. Fairley came to Toronto in 1915 to teach at University of Toronto. He was renowned as a scholar on German literature, particularly Goethe. He was also extremely influential as an art critic. His friendship and promotion of the Group of Seven was one of the keys to their success. [The famous Group of Seven photograph at the Arts and Letters Club in Toronto shows Barker Fairley at the table, fourth from left.] An accomplished painter in his own right, his work was very popular while he was alive and continues to be sought after by collectors.

In 1980 Paul Duval wrote a comprehensive monograph on Fairley's work. It was published by the Marianne Friedland Gallery in Toronto. There are were only 300 limited edition copies published, which included signed lithographs by Fairley.

This copy is leather bound and includes two lithographs by Fairley, numbered AP 25/25. The book is signed by Paul Duval and Barker Fairley. It is in excellent condition and is accompanied by its original hard case.
