Chagall Lithographe I
1960

In 1948 Marc Chagall was introduced to lithography by Fernand Mourlot. Mourlot owned a renowned print studio in Paris. He worked with Henri Matisse, Joan Miro and Pablo Picasso, among others, and popularized the use of lithography as a fine art form. Between 1950-1952 Chagall regularly worked in Mourlot Studios, learning the technical aspects of lithography. By the mid-1960s lithography had become one of Chagall's favourite mediums. He produced over one thousand original lithographs in his lifetime.

Six catalogue raisonne volumes were published featuring Chagall's lithography, with the help of Mourlot and printmaker Charles Sorlier. The first was published in 1960 and the last was published just after his death in 1985. For each volume, Chagall produced a suite of lithographs.

This is the first in the series of lithography catalogues. Volume 3, published in 1969 is also available.
