Organizational philanthropy has always been a winning activity for organizations large and small because of the good it does for the less fortunate. It comes in many forms - giving money, giving volunteer time or giving products or services.
But more and more organizations are better understanding the benefits that come back to them and their employees - benefits that may not be fully measurable but are most definitely fully impactful. This has never been more evident and important as now as millennials fill the workforce. This generation, perhaps more than its predecessors, places an extraordinary emphasis on the goals that philanthropy addresses and accomplishes. Here's a quick look at some of those employee benefits.
- Increases employee engagement. One recent study revealed that companies with engaged employees outperformed others by 200%.
- Volunteerism (such as leadership and project management) can cultivate new skills, develop confidence in "working outside their comfort zone" and help build a network of contacts.
- Broadens their awareness of societal issues, providing a deeper understanding of the plight of the less fortunate by bringing matters "up close and personal" and can add an emotional element and connection to the cause.
- Enhances their emotional connection to the organization, thereby improving job performance.
- Elevates the respect of the organization's leaders who might be seen in a new and more personal light.
- Provides opportunities to broaden work relationships, sometimes sharing activities with senior people.
- Validates and reinforces company values. Philanthropy shows leaders and employees "walking the talk."
While philanthropy is a year-round activity, if your organization does not yet have an organized program in place, this holiday season would be an excellent time to start. There is no shortage of people who need help and support.
