125th Street Happenings in June

Message from the President/CEO
On September 9, 2013, the 125th Street BID hits a milestone anniversary - 20 years of operations. This presents an opportunity for us to show everyone how special 125th Street truly is. We began by creating a celebratory logo that recognizes our 20 years but also brings attention to a second milestone -125th Street being placed on the Manhattan Street Grid. It also presents an opportunity for me to acknowledge what a rewarding experience that this has been for me. I came to 125th Street in 1988 as the merchant liaison for the 125th Street Local Development Corporation. My job was to work with city agencies, elected officials, the businesses and the community to ensure that the construction work that was being done ($17 million dollar face list) would not become a hardship for business operations. At the same time, we had the charge of creating a Business Improvement District to maintain the improvements. Continue the message here

The businesses on 125th Street west of Morningside Avenue met for a third time on Tuesday, July 9th. The meeting was very well attended and the discussion was extremely productive.

Public safety issues were discussed at the June meeting and forwarded to the 26th Precinct. At this meeting, we were honored to host special guest Deputy Inspector Steven Griffith, Commanding Officer of the 26th Precinct. Deputy Inspector Griffith and attendees discussed the public safety issues faced by in this area and measures that the businesses could take together as an organized group. To the Right: Special Guest Deputy Inspector Griffith
The discussion was very positive. Attendees appreciated having a forum to have their voice heard, and were provided with valuable resources and connections. Thank you to Deputy Inspector Griffith for taking the time out of his schedule to speak with the businesses in this area! Thanks to an Avenue NYC grant from the NYC Department of Small Business Services and our sponsor the Aloft Harlem Hotel, the BID was able to present the businesses with the 2013 Map & Guide. Each business located west of Morningside will receive 150 copies to distribute from their stores.
Also discussed: Using Social Media for better communication; Funding Requirements to continue beyond grant funds; and potential Resident and Youth Engagement initiatives.
We would like to congratulate Bethlehem Belatchew of Amalgamated Bank for being elected our Interim Leader and Kamal Nuru of Levels Barbershop for being elected Assistant Interim Leader as we move closer to a formal structure. A big thank you to Bethlehem and Kamal for taking on these roles!
