Naviance Links Learning to Life

This week the WHS Foundation sponsored several information sessions to introduce WHS Parents to the new Naviance system.  Attendees were given an overview of the college application management features and the College and Career Exploration tools in the Family Connection section of the site. Tools in Family Connection provide an opportunity to leverage the partnership between the student and parents and the school counsellors, working towards the common goal of optimizing our students' potential. The more the parent understands the resources and program design, the more likely the parent is able to be a helpful partner in the process.

Naviance is intended to engage and support the student in applying an effective decision-making process for choosing a career, a major, a college and even which courses they should take at Walton. But parents can play a big support role in guiding their student through this process. Parents can encourage their student to spend the time and thoughtful effort to discover and understand their talents and interests and connect these talents and interests to rewarding career options. Then, by researching the career options more deeply, the student defines potential career goals and develops an academic strategy for achieving these goals. Once students are ready, Naviance makes it easy for them to apply to colleges, look for scholarships and track their admission status. In short, Naviance offers students a better understanding of what they want to be, and how to get there.

Plan to spend some quality time with your student in the Family Connection site over Fall Break.  Encourage them to take the Career Interest Profile to find their top 6 traits and which professions would be a good fit for your student's profile.  Search for the perfect college using the SuperMatch feature. Work on building their resume. Or, maybe check out the Walton HS Catalog of Courses to find interesting courses to add to their 4-year academic plan.....
More information on Naviance can be found on the WHS Counseling webpage.

WHS Principal's Leadership Committee Raises Funds & Awareness for WWP

"The greatest casualty is to be forgotten." The motto of the Wounded Warrior Project inspired Walton's PLC to seek to become Student Ambassadors for this special philanthropy last fall. This status allows students to work with the WWP to raise funding and awareness to support our heroes.  The PLC, a committee of Walton students gaining leadership skills through the planning and implementation of fundraising and advocacy campaigns, has been raising funds to benefit WWP this week.
Wounded Warrior Project serves veterans and service members who incurred a physical or mental injury, illness, or wound, co-incident to their military service on or after September 11, 2001 and their families. With the mission to honor and empower Wounded Warriors, WWP encourages warriors as they adjust to their new normal and achieve new triumphs. Offering a variety of programs and services, WWP is equipped to serve warriors with every type of injury - from the physical to the invisible wounds of war.
The PLC will use the proceeds of their fundraising efforts to make a general donation and to purchase WWP backpacks, filled with essential care and comfort items such as clothing, toiletries, playing cards, and more - all designed to make a hospital stay more comfortable. Wounded service members receive backpacks as they arrive at military trauma units across the United States.

WHS Raiders Will Wear Camo to Support WWP at the Walton/Wheeler game tonight!
Activities include t-shirt and other merchandise sales and a donation drive during the Walton/Wheeler football game on 9/18.  The t-shirts will be on sale Friday during lunch and at the game Friday night.  Come visit the PLC table at the game to learn more. Donations given by check should be made out to the Wounded Warrior Project.
Thanks for your support, Raiders!

NEW PSAT Scheduled for October 14th

The PSAT will be administered at Walton on Wednesday, October 14th during the school day. This test is particularly important as it will be the first opportunity for the class of 2017 and beyond to experience the redesigned PSAT.  The new PSAT will aid students in their preparation for the redesigned SAT that begins in March of 2016.  This test is also a requirement of 11th graders who are pursuing the National Merit Scholarship.

The PSAT is designed to measure what students learn in high school and what they need to know to succeed in college.  The College Board encourages students to take charge of their education and learn as much as they can. Instead of testing over lists of obscure words that no one ever encounters in daily life, the new PSAT will focus on words in context, exploring important words and phrases found in texts in many different subjects. The Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section asks students to interpret, synthesize, and use evidence found in a wide range of sources. The Math Test focuses in-depth on three essential areas of math: Problem Solving and Data Analysis, Heart of Algebra, and Passport to Advanced Math. Current research shows that these areas are used disproportionately in a wide range of majors and careers.  In fact, throughout the new PSAT, questions are grounded in the real world, directly related to work performed in college and careers and reflect the way student will evaluate the evidence to make sense of recent discoveries, political developments, global events, and health and environmental issues.

And, there is NO PENALTY for guessing!  Students simply earn points for the questions they answer correctly. So encourage your student to go ahead and give their best answer to every question - there's no advantage to leaving them blank.

To prepare for the test, students can take the Practice Test for PSAT on the College Board website.  This test is in the same format as the official redesigned PSAT.  There are also tools to score the test when the student is ready to take it.

WHS English Teacher Tamara Hollingsworth has been preparing students for the PSAT and the SAT for 15 years.  Ms. Hollingsworth says the key to a stellar score is to practice taking the actual tests within the time constraints allocated to each section.  Practicing under testing conditions gives the student an opportunity to pace themselves so they can deliver an optimum performance.  It also allows to the student to relegate some aspects of the test, like reading & applying directions, to an automated response, saving time and brain power for comprehension and reasoning!

Another way to prepare for the PSAT is to take advantage of a new partnership between the College Board and the Khan Academy. "For the first time ever, the creators of the SAT have given Khan Academy exclusive access and advice to build a personalized practice program for anyone, anywhere.  These tools are free and available now for every student to take ownership of their learning and their future."   For more information on this collaboration, click here: Free SAT Prep
