     Collaborative Project Raises Funds for

Wounded Warriors

Last week, an Art Show was held in the Fine Arts Lobby to showcase the artwork created by WHS students to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of WWII. Teams of students partnered to research a theme from this period. The students presented their research in both English and Spanish. The teams then created a historical artwork depicting their interpretation of their theme.

After the gallery showing, a Silent Auction of the artwork was held and almost $800 was raised to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project.  Attendees were very impressed with the artwork and enjoyed discussing the themes and art projects with their student creators. Organizers agreed the evening was a great success and are making plans to make the project/art show an annual event. WHS students felt they learned a great deal and enjoyed exploring and commemorating this important time in world history by blending academics, fine arts, and service.  Enjoy a few of the artworks generated by this talented group of students.

WHS Cheer Squads Keep

Walton Spirit STRONG

Think Cheering is not a sport?  Think again.  Members of the four WHS Cheer Squads combine athleticism, grace and enthusiasm to support student engagement and school spirit at Walton. The sport has grown nationwide over the past decade and now demands an extensive background in tumbling and/or gymnastics. Daily practice schedules and private lessons make cheering a huge commitment. Walton Cheerleading includes Freshman, JV and Varsity squads that cheer for football and basketball games during the year and lead pep rallies, homecoming and spirit days. The Competition squad cheers during football games and participates in competitions during their season. This past season they made it to State and SE Regionals!

Seniors Rachel Friday, Lindsey Mashburn, Cara Seckman, Lauren Wetzel, Anna Grady Wilson, and Janay Wilson were honored at the Cheering Banquet recently.  Together, this group brought over 30 years of cheering experience to the squad. Co-captain Cara Seckman credits Coaches Roberta Manheim, Christy Lewis, Kimin Filardi and Callie Bryan for teaching life skills along with cheering to their squads.  Her co-captain, Anna Grady Wilson, added that being a Walton Cheerleader has opened many doors for her, creating great friendships along the way.

Walton Cheer has just finished tryouts for the 2015-2016 season and announced the roster for next year. As the new squads start preparing for their fall kickoff, Booster Club Presidents Tara Wilson and Lauren Seckman and the Executive Board are busy getting ready to support another year of Walton Cheer.  The biggest fundraiser for the Walton Cheer Booster Club is the Camp Walton Summer Cheer Program.  A long-time Walton tradition, Camp Walton is open to all ages K-8th grade and is staffed by the Walton Cheer Squads.  Camp Walton gives these junior Raiders a chance to experience the sport first hand. Holly Wasson, whose 6th grade daughter attended last year, endorsed the program saying, "Laney can't wait to come again this year!  She had a blast and really enjoyed working with the high school Cheerleaders."

Camp Walton will be held the week after school gets out from May 27-29.  Open to all interested students in grades 6-8, the Jr. Raider Cheer Squad camp will be held from 9am till noon each day. The Walton cheerleaders teach attendees a half time dance they can use during their season and help them with jumps, cheers and chants.  It is 3 days of fun ending in a performance for parents. Click here to register for the Middle School Cheer Camp .  The Elementary School Cheer Squad camp will be held from 1-4:00 pm. This group will learn cheers, jumps, dance steps, and tumbling. It is a great introduction to the sport.  Click here to register for the Elementary School Cheer Camp

Thanks to all the cheer squads for helping to make

WHS Named One of America's Most Challenging High Schools

The Washington Post  just announced the 2015 list of the Most Challenging High Schools in America. This list ranks schools through an index formula that's a simple ratio: the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Advanced International Certificate of Education tests given at a school each year, divided by the number of seniors who graduated that year.

This year, only 11 percent of the approximately 22,000 U.S. public high schools were placed on this national list.

In addition to this distinction, WHS ranked in the top 8% of the Most Challenging  schools on this year's list.  Congratulations to the entire WHS Community!

Family Chemistry Night A Huge Success

Last week, parents, elementary and middle school students followed the trail of balloons to four WHS Science Labs set up with multiple stations in each room.  Walton families could boil liquid in their hands, rescue ice cubs, and even do a bit of detective work in the WHS CSI lab.

WHS Science teachers, Lynn Dombrowski and Jennice Ozment conceived the idea for a Chemistry Night while collaborating on a lesson plan for one of their classes. Both teachers want to develop an interest in science in students and parents in the Walton Community. Nationally, there is a great demand for STEM majors and Dombrowski and Ozment want to hook the next generation on Science as soon as possible.

This was the first Family Chemistry Night at Walton and the faculty agrees that it was a success.  Students from all age groups came with their families for a fun night together. It was rewarding for the teachers to watch the students enjoy all the activities, and to observe their fascination with chemistry. Parents in attendance mentioned they were very impressed with the presentations that WHS Science students gave at each activity center.

Due to the overwhelming response of the community, the organizers have decided to make this an annual event. Ms. Dombrowski and Ms. Ozment were assisted by their colleagues Mrs. Pam Riley, Dr. Pat Harvey, and Mrs. Ann Baxley and many Walton science student volunteers. Several local businesses generously supported the evening program including Bagelious, Marco's Pizza and Subway on Roswell Rd. The Family Chemistry Night committee is already conjuring up new activities to amaze and astound for next year.  Make sure your family gets in on the fun at the 2nd Annual WHS celebration of science!

PTSA Awards Scholarships

Each year, the PTSA gives a $1000 scholarship to one boy and one girl recipient from the senior class. To be eligible to apply for the scholarship, the student must have received the Raider Pride Award at some point in their high school career. This award recognizes students who consistently demonstrated exceptional character traits, including honesty, integrity and kindness. These are the criteria that the judges apply to select the scholarship recipient.

Maria Granros and Sam Greene were presented with the Raider Pride Scholarship for 2015 during Honors Night. Maria will be an Honors Student at UGA this fall and plans to major in Psychology.  Sam will be attending the Georgia Military College in the fall, majoring in Political Science and Sociology.

Congratulations, Maria and Sam. And, thank you for being a positive role model at Walton. We know you will make a difference in your college, your career and your community.
