WHS Visual Arts Wins National Acclaim

Art students at Walton High School have been named the grand prize winners of the National "Water Is Life" Classroom mural contest for grades 9-12. The contest, inspired by the growing demands on U.S. water resources, drew more than 9,000 students across 45 states. Participating students painted 50 square foot murals depicting the range of habitats and uses for water throughout the United States. Over 35 students at Walton High School worked on the mural. Program organizers hope the process of interpreting water-based habitats through art will lead students to a greater understanding of their role as future caretakers of the resource.

The WHS Visual Art program includes Visual Art Comprehensive classes through AP Studio Art Classes under the direction of Ms. Kathleen Petka. A Walton High School graduate, Ms. Petka has been teaching at Walton since 2004. She won Cobb County's High School Visual Art Specialist award for The 2014-2015 school year. In addition, she was named Outstanding National Art Honor Society Sponsor of the Year for 2014 by the National Art Education Association at the National Convention in San Diego, California.

WHS students' artwork has been displayed throughout the state and country in the Georgia Capitol, U.S. Capitol, Atlanta's U.S. Department of Treasury, and the Dogwood Festival. Their work has won state-wide competitions, has been featured on Marta buses throughout Atlanta, and has been honored in NAHS and NAEA News Publications

The WHS National Art Honor Society shows art has a heart and is actively involved in giving back to the community through art. Recognizing the power of art therapy, NAHS students are learning to have compassion, respect, and empathy for the elderly, a growing population that is frequently overlooked. NAHS students have painted with residents of Golden Living, a skilled nursing and sub-acute rehabilitation facility and with residents at the Sunrise Assisted Living Facility. They also volunteer their time with the non-profit organization Foundation for Hospital Art by painting second layers of paint on canvases that will later be displayed in hospitals throughout the world, making the world a more aesthetically pleasing place.

WHS Commemorates

WWII 70th Anniversary

Talented WHS students are collaborating across many subject areas on a unique project to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of WWII. Students representing the WHS International Spanish Academy (ISA) who are currently enrolled in Honors World History have partnered with students in AP Studio Art to research a theme from this period. The students presented their research in both English and Spanish. The teams then created a historical artwork depicting their interpretation of their theme.

The resulting art work will be displayed at an Art Show on Thursday, April 23 from 5-8 PM at Walton High School in the Fine Arts Lobby.  Artwork and research will be on display with the students present to answer questions and talk further about their projects.  After the gallery showing, a Silent Auction of the artwork will take place.  All auction proceeds will benefit the Wounded Warrior Project and will be collected by the WHS Principals' Leadership Committee, official Student Ambassadors for the Wounded Warrior Project.  Music for the event will be provided by Walton High School's Chamber Orchestra.

The entire WHS Community is invited and encouraged to attend the Art Show and Silent Auction. Join the WHS students as they explore and commemorate this important time in world history by blending academics, fine arts, foreign language, and service.

ECCC  PTA Presents the
Margie Hatfield Scholarship to
WHS Senior Austin Wang

Each spring, the East Cobb County Council of PTAs presents a $1000 scholarship award to a graduating senior from each of the six public high schools in the Council.  Created in 1990 to honor the service and commitment given by Ms. Hatfield to the students of East Cobb, the Scholarship is awarded to students exhibiting an exceptional commitment to service and citizenship, characteristics that embody the philosophy of the PTA.

On the 25th Anniversary of this scholarship program, Ms. Hatfield presented this award to WHS Senior Austin Wang.  Scholarship Coordinator, Irene Barton reports Austin is active in his church and community. Music is a passion of his as evidenced by his leadership and success in the WHS Symphony Orchestra where he is the Concert Master this year. He also is the 1st Violinist in the Walton Chamber Orchestra.  Austin is the founder and President of the Business Club and has taught himself Greek in his spare time.  Last year, Austin developed Operation Book Drive where he organized a massive book collection which resulted in the donation of over 5,500 books to sick children from economically distressed families.  "Social entrepreneurship has wholly captured my interest," he writes. "I want to find new ways to address old problems."

Congratulations, Austin.

PTSA Community  Outreach Club Sponsors "COOL Girls" Accessory Drive

Cool Girls is a philanthropy dedicated to the self-empowerment of girls. Cool Girls' volunteer networks support girls in all aspects of their development - breaking the cycles of poverty, low self-esteem, and teen pregnancy. Their life skills programs develop girls into confident women through education and exposure to a broader world of opportunity. Today, Cool Girls serves over 400 girls through their partnerships with 9 Title 1 schools in DeKalb and Fulton Counties. The Walton Community Outreach Club supports the Cool Girls program through an annual accessory drive. This year's drive will be held next week, April 20-24.  Please bring gently used accessories, book bags, school supplies and "cool" room décor items to the collection box in the front office.  Donation receipts for tax purposes and a verification form for an hour of volunteer service can be obtained from the PTSA Front Office Volunteer on duty at the time the goods are donated.

Make a difference in the lives of under- privileged girls and get a service hour for cleaning out your closet!  It's a  win/win!

Thanks for your support!
