WHS Swim/Dive Team Wins State!

The undefeated WHS Boys Swim/Dive Team successfully defended their Class AAAAAA State Championship at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center last weekend, beating out 40 other State teams in their division. The Girls captured 4th in the State 6A Finals.

Coach Ty Vernon attributed the successful season to teamwork. "The Walton swimmers and divers are not only great athletes, but wonderful students as a whole.  In a sport that often seems to place emphasis on the individual, they focus on the team.  This attitude paired with the seniors' ability to lift everyone up to the next level is what inspired the team to achieve greatness at all levels.  The coaches could not be any prouder of our team."  Coach Sharon Loughran agrees, "The end performance was really impressive and certainly a lot of fun; however, the real strength of this team is its unity. They were always encouraging and pushing each other both in practice and in meets. I was also proud that countless people from other schools, came up to me and said we were an easy group to pull for due to the spirit and class of our team as a competitive group. This season flew by for the coaches as well. The team was fun to coach; they were selfless, coachable, and met challenges head on!"

Five WHS records were shattered at the State Meet:  Emma Cole, Girls 200-Yard Freestyle; David Dingess, 100-Yard Butterfly; Thaddius Macon, 50-Yard Freestyle; Thaddius Macon, Nicholas Froemming, Tyler Yuen & Stephen Lane,

200-Yard Freestyle Relay; Nicholas Froemming, Thaddius Macon, David Dingess, & Jake Williams, 200-Yard Medley Relay.

Several seniors will continue their swimming careers in college: Mary Beth Beckwith at Vanderbilt; David Dingess at the University of Kentucky; Olivia Winkler at the Carson Newman College; Resse Guthrie at Birmingham Southern; and Thaddius Macon at the Navel Academy. Congratulations, Raiders!

Welcome to the Media Center!

The Walton High School Media Center would like to welcome you! We are open every day from 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.  We close on WEB days at 3 p.m.  We have a wonderful selection of print and non-print resources for both pleasure reading and research.  We receive a new selection of bestselling books each month. No need to spend money at Barnes and Noble, Amazon, or Target.  Come check out a great book for free in the Media Center!  Find the hidden heart in select books in the month of February, check it out, and win a pink "love" fortune cookie!  You will also be entered to win a free bestseller from our giveaway library throughout the month.

For your academic research, we have access to Cobb Digital Library - a one-stop shop for all of your research needs.  From home, go to Cobb Resources.  Enter the school name Walton. The user id is the student's identification number and the password is "read".  Cobb Digital Library offers access to wonderful databases such as Gale Virtual Reference Library, Science in Context, Opposing Viewpoints, EasyBibPro, GALILEO, and much, much more.  Students may also access ebooks that can be read on a digital reader such as an iPad or Kindle.  Many of the offerings are parallel reads.  See a Media Specialist for details.

During the school year, we sponsor numerous fun events to promote reading and learning.  In addition to monthly theme-related contests, we sponsor larger events.  This year during Teen Read Week in Oct., representatives from the Cobb County Public Library were on hand during all lunches to assist with library card and voter registrations and to promote the fabulous resources and programs of the public libraries.  We also participated in Hispanic Heritage Month festivities by featuring a collaborative lesson between the Ethnic Diversity classes and the Media Center.  Students wrote and narrated original poems which were on display at the Hispanic Heritage Festival. We enjoyed another successful Scholastic book fair which is a community-wide event. With Powder Puff funds, we purchased a Little Free Library which will be coming to the Walton community in Spring 2015. Also in second semester, we are looking forward to sponsoring the Powder Puff football game, organizing the March Madness Tournament of Books, and providing free books through our Beach Book Giveaway program in addition to many other events.

We would not be able to do any of this successfully without the invaluable help of our Media Center volunteers.  We have volunteers weekly who help us with the regular tasks of the media center, WEB volunteers who help with check outs on our busy WEB days, and special volunteers who help with inventory, Powder Puff, and the Scholastic Book Fair.  If you are interested in helping in any of these ways in the future, please contact our volunteer coordinator, Carolyn Cadiou

Live Your Passion!

Make time each day to spend making your soul happy.  Art, music, reading, crafts, cooking, connecting with friends or serving others.

Doing things that you love improves your quality of life, boosts a positive outlook on your day and puts a skip in your step.  Try to incorporate some of your life's passion into your daily life.  By doing this you will perhaps fill a void with happiness and positive energy instead of living in the status quo.  You never know, you may even be able to interlace your passion into your work.

If you don't know what you are passionate about ask yourself, "What makes me feel alive?"  Spend some time doing some soul searching and check out the TED Talk video "How To Find and Do Work You Love" .

LIVE YOUR PASSION, AND LIFE WILL TAKE CARE OF THE REST.

PTSA Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week

PTSA Chairs Kelli Evertsen and Susan Fanning and members of their committee hosted the Walton County Fair last week to show our teachers and staff how much we appreciate all they give of their time and talents to our students.

The committee played off the WaltonStrong: Mind, Body and Sprit theme and planned special events each day. Fabulous raffle prizes were donated by individuals and community businesses.  Thank you, Sponsors!

Lucky winners took home spa treatments, tickets to local events, gift certificates, fitness center memberships and even a large screen TV.  From chair massages to great food, the committee made sure the WHS Teachers and Staff knew they are APPRECIATED!  If you haven't already, make sure you take a moment to send a note or email to a WHS teacher, just to say "Thanks" for being a vital part of your student's life and making a difference at Walton, each and every day!

PUBLIC SAFETY TOPIC OF THE MONTH:  Being a Good Witness

All too often police respond to crime scenes and someone walks up to tell them about something or someone suspicious they saw but didn't think it was worth calling the police.  No matter how good we are at policing and patrolling, it is not possible to be everywhere and see everything. Our neighborhoods and businesses will be best protected with a cooperative effort of citizen and police communication and vigilance.

You could be responsible for preventing a crime. It is important to realize that by calling the police on the suspicious car parked in the cul-de-sac, or on the person walking around the neighborhood knocking on doors, someone may have prevented a number of burglaries or entering autos that may have happened. You know what is suspicious in your neighborhood better than the police do because you are there every day.

Should I call 911?  YES! Most of the time if  you have to ask yourself, "Should I call 911?", then more than likely you should. Cobb County dispatch has a non-emergency number, 770-499-3911. You can always save this in your phone, but there is not an issue with dialing 911 because you see something suspicious and would like to have the police check the area. The delay in calling the non-emergency number could be the time that was needed for the responding unit to get there in time to stop a crime in progress.

How to be a Good Witness  When you are going to call the police about something suspicious or a crime that has occurred, it is time to be observant. Be prepared to answer questions for dispatch and for the police. Dispatch will need a good description of the location which could include an address, cross streets, nearby businesses, etc.  They will want a description of the person or vehicle. There are a lot of similar cars on the street, be specific. Your memory is the best immediately after an incident. Most people carry smart phones that have the ability to take pictures, record video and the ability to record notes. Take notes on what you saw including anything that is easily forgotten such as tag numbers.  Always remember that your safety is a priority, no amount of information is worth you risking your
Personal Safety.

Characteristics to look for include: Vehicle (Type, Make, Model, Color, Damage if present, and the TAG NUMBER!!!) & Person Characteristics including: Race, Height, Weight, Distinguishable clothing (shoes are important), Tattoos, Piercings, Hair (color, length, style).

Working together we can make East Cobb as safe as possible. Remain safe and vigilant!
