PTSA Reflections Winners Advance to State Level Competitions

Xinzhu Yang, "Beauty".

Each year, the Walton PTSA and its students participate in the Reflections contest sponsored by the National PTA. Reflections encourages students to display their creativity by submitting entries in six categories based on a universal theme. This year's theme was "The world would be a better place if..." Walton's contest was a huge success! Our students submitted over 350 entries to judges at the school level. Of those, 23 were selected to be forwarded to the East Cobb County Council of PTAs (ECCC PTA) to be judged with entries from other local high schools.

13 of those entries were selected by the ECCC PTA for recognition, with 11 of the entries forwarded to the Georgia PTA to be judged at the state level. Here are our winners at the ECCC PTA level:

PTSA Volunteers Make a Difference at WHS!

 Six Committees Contribute $100,000 Value/Year

Front Office Volunteers Enjoy Treats!

WHS and the PTSA Board say "Thank You!" to the many PTSA Volunteers who serve at Walton each month!  Volunteers usually work 2 to 2.5 shifts twice per month in the front office, the phone desk, PPO, the Copy Room, the Media Center and during WEB. Chairs Lisa Frits and Natalie Collins oversee 102 front office volunteers who collectively serve 75 hours per week greeting guests, providing information, answering the phone and freeing up the WHS staff to concentrate on their tasks without interruptions.

Attendance Office Volunteer Chair Cynthia Meyer, Media Center Volunteer Chair Carolyn Cadiou, WEB Volunteer Chair Martha Stevens, Guidance Volunteer Chair Suzanne Lynch and Copy Crew Chair Stacy Wolff agree that their volunteers play a vital role at WHS.  The PPO Volunteers sign students in and out of school for several hours each day.  Media Center, WEB, and Guidance Volunteers monitor students, greet parents and guests and do clerical work for the staff and administration. The Copy Crew acts as an in-house copy service for teachers, processing thousands of copies each week.  All total, these six committees contribute over 4800 volunteer hours each year with a dollar value exceeding $100,000!

To all these Committee Chairs and volunteers, from the WHS administration, faculty, staff, students and parents, we say, "THANK YOU!"  WHS runs more efficiently, is more welcoming to the community and is a better learning environment for our students because you choose to make a difference and give your time and talents to our school!

PTSA Hosts Holiday Staff Luncheon

Faculty and Staff enjoy performance by WHS Chorus.

The WHS staff and faculty were treated to a holiday luncheon in the Media Center on Dec. 2.  PTSA Co-Chairs Noelle Paramoure, Katie White and Ilysa Shneibaum created a special event complete with a fabulous catered lunch from ZEAL and an incredible dessert & hot chocolate bar contributed by WHS parents. WHS Chorus and Orchestra members performed holiday music at each of the 3 seatings.  Gifts of red and white stress balls with the WHS logo were a big hit.  Hopefully, they made the final exam week a little less stressful for the staff!

Thank you to Zeal and to the PTSA volunteers who served and provided dessert bar items. A special thanks goes to Noelle, Katie, and Ilysa for all their work on the holiday luncheon, the August back-to-school luncheon and the Staff Breakfast before the PSAT. Your committee lets the community show how much we appreciate the WHS staff and faculty!

Mr. and Mrs. Claus visited WHS last week.  Sources reveal Principal McNeill's "wish list" includes a new 440,000 s.f.  Walton High School!

The School Board authorization vote on the WHS build project

    WHS Team Wins State Wide

Video Contest

Attorney General Sam Olens, left, announced the winners of the Prescription Drug Abuse Video Contest at Walton High School. Pictured with Attorney Gen. Olens are, from left, Walton Principal Judith McNeill, Walton students Adam Schmidt and Vaughn Smith who produced the winning video, Linda Strouffer of WSB-TV, and Cobb Schools Superintendent Chris Ragsdale.

"Congratulations to the winners of the 'We're Not Gonna Take It' video contest," said Attorney General Olens. "We received many excellent entries, and I know the judges had a difficult task in choosing a winner. The winning video sends a strong message that abusing prescription drugs is not a game and can turn deadly quickly."

The "We're Not Gonna Take It" video contest, launched by Attorney General Olens in September, was open to all Georgia high school students. Students were challenged to produce a 30-second video encouraging their peers to live a healthy lifestyle by rejecting prescription drug abuse.

Cobb Approved as IE2 District

The State Board of Education has unanimously approved the Cobb County School District's final contract to become an Investing in Educational Excellence (IE2) system of flexibility. "This is great news for the students of Cobb County," said Interim Superintendent Chris Ragsdale. "The IE2 status will allow our schools the freedom to try new and innovative approaches to improve achievement, but in ways that best suit the individual schools." Chief Academic Officer Mary Elizabeth Davis agrees, "The Cobb County School District continues to be a model by leading a culture of innovation."It really highlights the work we're doing in Cobb to facilitate the innovative capital of our community. IE2 gives us the opportunity to customize the learning in our schools, to establish a 'made in Cobb' model that works and also serves as a strategy that other districts can follow."  More information about IE2, as well as the district contract, can be found at:CCSD
