WHS SWIM & DIVE TEAMS MAKE A SPLASH...

IN AND OUT OF THE POOL!

Swimmers support Susan G. Komen Fund

The WHS Swim and Dive   teams have competed against over 25 teams thus far this season, winning each meet to date! The swimmers and divers have performed exceptionally well and have represented Walton with great sportsmanship and pride. Coaches Sharon Loughran, Allison McGraw and Ty Vernon have guided this extraordinary group of student athletes to County level championships for the past three years!  The WHS Boys are 2014 State Champions and the girls team finished 4th in the State! The teams are supported by a committed group of parents in the Booster Club and are sponsored by many businesses in our community!

The Swim and Dive program also takes time to work for a special cause that is near to their heart.  They invite the Walton community to join the WHS teams this Saturday, December 6th at 1pm for the 6th Annual Margaret Gilbert Memorial Invite! Hosted by Walton High School and held at the Cobb Aquatic Center on Fairground Road in Marietta, this is not only a swim meet but also, a fundraiser in memory of Margaret Soulen Gilbert. Margaret was an All-American swimmer for Virginia Tech where she met and trained with Coach Loughran.  In 2001, she was inducted into the Virginia Tech Hokies' Hall of Fame. She also swam for North Springs High School, one of the six high school teams competing in Saturday's meet.

Margaret Gilbert

Upon Margaret's passing from a two-year battle with breast cancer, Coach Loughran dedicated this annual December Swim and Dive Meet to her former college teammate. Each year, the participating high school teams compete in the water, on the diving board and by collecting loose change and donations to be turned in upon arriving at the meet. The meet has a festive air about it and many swimmers wear a pink cap in honor of the fight against breast cancer.  All proceeds raised by this event go to the Susan G. Komen Fund in memory of Margaret Gilbert. The high school that raises the most money is awarded a small token of appreciation for their effort.

The WHS teams invite you to come and support the Raiders and this great cause! For those who would like to contribute in Margaret's memory but cannot attend the meet, please go to the WHS Swim and Dive Team's website: Swim & Dive.  There will be food trucks at the Swim Meet as well with a percentage of the proceeds going to the team.

Other upcoming meets are Dec. 12 & 13 at Wesleyan High School, Cobb Diving Challenge, Dec. 19 at Cobb Aquatic Center and Cobb Quad Meet, Dec. 20 at Cobb Aquatic Center.  The Swim and Dive teams invite you to meet them pool-side at one of these meets to support your Walton Raiders!

Sleep! It does a Body Good!

Sleep is important for people of all ages to stay healthy.  Getting enough sleep each night rejuvenates your mind, body and spirit.  Here are a few steps to take to help you get a better night's sleep:

1.  De-Stress!  During this busy and stressful time of year, the body over releases the stress hormone cortisol.  Too much cortisol messes up ALL of your other hormones creating an imbalance.  Take time to relax a few minutes everyday through meditation and yoga which will help you lower cortisol levels so you sleep better.

2.  Unplug! Turn off your electronics a half hour before bedtime.  The blue light from the TV, lap top and cell phone prevent you from getting into your REM sleep pattern by inhibiting the production of melatonin.  This makes it harder to fall asleep.  NEVER sleep with your cell phone by your pillow or on your night stand.

3.  Journal!  If you struggle with slowing your mind down, keep a journal at your bedside.  Write down whatever is on your mind, and mentally put it aside. You can get to sleep, and  you can address your "to do" list in the morning.

Try for at least 7 hours of sleep each night.  Physical and psychological repair and regeneration occurs  between the hours of 10pm-6am.  So go to sleep early to get your rest and rejuvenation!

Georgia Department of Education Seeks Parent Input on new Math and English Language Curriculum

The Common Core Georgia Performance    Standards (CCGPS) in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics have been revised based on a formal review and evaluation process as directed by an Executive Order from the Governor. A Working Committee representing K-12 Georgia public school teachers, post-secondary staff, parents, and instructional leaders from across the state made revisions to the standards and the structure of the math and English curriculum. An Academic Review Committee then reviewed and finalized the proposed revised standards for presentation to the State Board of Education. The drafts of revised standards will be posted for public review and comment for 60 days from November 12, 2014 through January 10, 2015. To read the drafts of the revised standards and complete a survey, go to the Ga Dept of Ed website:  SURVEY
