New Building Updates

The construction on the new Walton High School has been delayed due to projected dramatic increases in Walton's student population over the next 10 years.  The Cobb County School District and Cobb County School Board have been working to verify these projected increases and to make any necessary changes in the design of the new WHS facility. There will be a community Town Hall meeting held by Int. District Superintendent Chris Ragsdale and Post 6 School Board Member Scott Sweeney on Monday, October 20th at 7:00 pm in the Walton Theater.  Superintendent Ragsdale and Mr. Sweeney will provide a progress report and address any questions from the parents in our Walton Cluster. Make plans to attend this important meeting and bring a neighbor with you. We welcome a show of support from the entire Walton Cluster for this critical project.

HOMECOMING FESTIVITIES Next Week (Oct. 13-17)!

Next week is Homecoming for Walton High School! Each day of the week will have a different theme, and the students are invited to dress in costumes to reflect that theme. The administration encourages creativity but reminds the students that their costumes must meet the WHS Dress Code policy. (Just for fun, picture what you would wear each day and compare your selection to your students' ensemble!)

Homecoming Spirit Days (October 13-17):

Monday:        Country Club Day

Tuesday:       Safari Day

Wednesday:  Tacky Day

Thursday:      Nickelodeon

Friday:           WALTON SPIRIT DAY

Wednesday (Oct. 15) and Friday (Oct. 17) are WEB days.   The students will get fired up at the Oct. 17 Homecoming Pep Rally that begins around 11:45! The Homecoming Parade starts at 2:45 at the Temple Kol Emeth, 2972 Sewell Mill Road. (There is no parking at the Temple.) The Parade will route down Sewell Mill to Bill Murdock Road, ending at Walton HS. The WHS Marching Band will lead the parade which will feature the football team and coaches, cheerleaders, class floats, entries by several Walton Clubs and school dignitaries including Principal McNeill.

Friday night (Oct. 17), the Homecoming Game kicks off at 7:30 pm in Raider Valley against Milton High School. Tickets can be purchased during lunch on Thursday and Friday. It's School Spirit Night so wear school colors: red, white and blue to show your support for the WALTON RAIDERS! The Homecoming Court will be presented at half-time, and the game will be televised!

            WEB DAYS!  EVERYBODY loves them!

NEVER OUT OF THE FIGHT
WHS VOLLEYBALL TEAM

After graduating four of the Lady Raiders Volleyball 4-time state championship seniors, the state's other competitors are circling the waters, ready to take advantage of what many have deemed a "rebuilding year" for the Raiders. They may be in for a surprise!

A master at motivation, Coach Suzanne Fitzgerald was inspired by the movie, "Lone Survivor," the true story of Marcus Luttrell and his Navy SEALs Team whose ill-fated mission left Marcus and his team to fight for their lives in a valiant effort of modern warfare in the mountains of Afghanistan. The movie's tagline, "Never out of the fight," has become the Lady Raiders' adopted motto for this season. In short, they don't plan on going down any time soon.

The north Georgia mountains served as the backdrop for this year's team retreat.  Along with a rigorous training session on the mountain and "Lone Survivor" movie viewing, the team participated in team building sessions which helped develop team chemistry and has led to success on the court. The team has also been training with guest athletic trainers from the military and has traveled to Louisville for a tournament which included two teams ranked in the Top 10 in the nation to prepare them for another run at the GHSA 6A title, along with weekly area play matches.

This year's senior leadership is a strong indication of the team's resolve for success. Senior captains, Ashley D and Ashley M, are 3-year members of Varsity's winning dynasty. Junior captain, Celeste F, and Sophomore captain, Dalaney H, are joined by Tai B, a New Orleans transfer who was part of her own state-winning dynasty, and a talented roster of junior, sophomore and freshmen competitors also looking to continue the winning tradition. The team will have to survive circling sharks like Harrison, North Cobb and East Coweta High schools for a fifth ring! Please join the Lady Raiders at the Area Finals on Saturday, October 11 where they will continue their quest to become the "Lone Survivor." Location and times TBA at Lady Raiders

In honor of our military personnel, the Lady Raiders Volleyball team is hosting a Burpee-A-Thon on Wednesday, November 12 beginning at 1:15 to raise funds for the Lone Survivor Foundation. This amazing philanthropy's mission is to restore, empower, and renew hope for our wounded service members and their families through health, wellness, and therapeutic support. Middle and elementary school kids will begin at 4:45 PM. Over $2800 in pledges have already been received by the Varsity team. If you would like information on how you can support the Lady Raiders' Lone Survivor fundraiser, please contact Coach Suzanne Fitzgerald at Suzanne1.Fitzgerald@cobbk12.org.

"JUST MOVE!"

Implementing healthy habits permanently can be a challenge. That's because some of our bad habits have been around since high school or college, and they have become such a part of our everyday life.

But here is the good news. We get to CHOOSE HOW we take care of ourselves!

This week, let's focus on adding in the health-building habit of exercise.

EVERYONE knows how important this is and it's not just for weight loss!  You know the saying, "move it or lose it!"

Studies consistently show that High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) has many benefits such as healthy heart endurance, stimulated production of the "fitness hormone" HGH and more efficiently burned calories and fat in the 24 hours following interval training vs. long slow distance cardio which only burns fat during the activity.

Interval training should only be done 2-3 times/week on non-consecutive days. This type of training is suitable for any fitness level. Of course, you should always consult with your physician before beginning any new fitness program.

Some examples of interval workouts are:

Beginner = 30 seconds-1 minute of fast walking alternating with 45 seconds-2 minutes of light walking.

Fit = 30 seconds-1 minute of jogging with 30 seconds-1 minute of walking.

Athletic = 30-45 seconds of sprinting with 45 seconds-1 minute of jogging.

Repeat this no more than 8 times. This exercise only takes 30 minutes with warm up/cool down and stretching!

Daily activity is so important- especially when life pushes back!  Take a walk outside, do some stretching and throw in some push ups even though you don't have time!
