It's Week 2 of our books and beaches bonanza, so find yourself a patch of sand and settle down with today's issue. This week finds us at a perfectly pleasant Pompano Beach, where we uncover its remarkable reputation as the "Wreck Capitol". Yes, JABBERS, hidden deep beneath the surface of its waters, but within swimming distance of shore (only in South Florida!,) lie natural coral reefs and an abundance of shipwrecks, attracting snorkeling and scuba enthusiasts ... and Team JAB! Keep reading for more beach banter, and for our second installment of Books & Books founder Mitchell Kaplan's exclusive list top titles to enjoy this summer. But before you let yourself get drawn into another page-turner, help a fellow JABBER nail down a nanny, manage mosquitoes, and find foster care for a furry friend.

Happy reading and Happy JABBING!

~ Team JAB

A Real Page-Turner: Part 2
So many books, so little time ... Team JAB to the rescue! We bring you straight to the best reads of summer 2013 with the expert assistance of Mitchell Kaplan, founder of South Florida independent bookstore chain Books & Books. Happy  reading and Happy JABBING!

And The Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini
Perhaps his greatest novel yet, and that is hard to say after The Kite Runner. Follows a close-knit Afghan family over 60 years, tracing two young lives and Afghan history. Resonates with poetry and truth and brings us closer to understanding a culture that can still seem alien to us.

The Unwinding by George Packer
As a political animal who is deeply interested in the future of this country, I love looking closely at our social fabric, what we've won, what we've lost. With his fine journalistic eye, Packer delivers a great work of non-fiction, fascinating to read.

No Regrets, Coyote by John Dufresne
I'm really looking forward to meeting John's new sleuth, Wylie "Coyote" Melville. John is such a master craftsman, I want to see what he does while working in the noir form.

Stoner by John Williams
This book is rumored to be the best minimalist novel ever written. Yet, at heart it's a love story about the love of literature and passion in midlife. Very intriguing.

Is There a Doctor in the House?
From Geraldine Blunt:  REPLY
I am considering switching to a concierge doctor, as I can no longer tolerate the long waits at a doctor's office for a five-minute visit. Has anyone used this type of service? Do you have such a doctor to recommend?

See to It
From Anonymous:  REPLY
My five-year-old son has recently been complaining of objects looking small to him. For example, I'll be standing a couple of feet away from him, and he'll say my head looks really little. His doctor initially said it had to do with the persistent fluid in his ears causing visual-spatial issues, but he recently had tubes put in his ears and his problems persist. I'm concerned there might be something else going on. I've read about a condition known as Micropsia. Have you had a child with this? If so, I'd love to learn more about it. I'd also welcome suggestions for pediatric neurologists and pediatric ophthalmologists. Thank you in advance.

Guiding Light
Hillsboro Lighthouse,
as seen from
Hillsboro Inlet Park
From Team JAB
At the north end of Pompano Beach stands the iconic black and white Hillsboro Lighthouse. JABBERS can best admire this local landmark at their leisure, either from Hillsboro Inlet Park or farther south from the beach.  But to get up close and personal to this working, U.S. Coast Guard Light station requires a little planning ... and like all good things, it's worth the work. Mark your calendars for Saturday, August 10, the next scheduled tour date and National Lighthouse Day. To read more about the Lighthouse, including tour requirements, click HERE. To see the Lighthouse's live webcam of Hillsboro Inlet, click HERE

Part-Time Editorial Assistant Wanted
From Rochelle Broder-Singer:  REPLY
Freelance writer/editor hiring part-time editorial assistant to work approximately 10 hours per week, through the end of August. Work may be done remotely. Responsibilities include research, writing and administrative assistance. Hourly pay commensurate with skill level. Journalism or PR background required. Potential to extend beyond August if mutually agreeable.*

Ready to Retire
From Esther Reyes:  REPLY
After 40+ years of owning his own business, my father is serious about retiring ... or at least scaling back significantly. I am trying to get him to face the daunting task of clearing out his warehouse, but I have to overcome a few obstacles. One is helping him realize that this has to happen ~ he's 83 years old and hasn't quite accepted retirement! The other is knowing how, where and what to do with the contents of his warehouse, mostly tires, wheels, and auto service machinery that is 15+ years old. Much will go to the garbage or recycling, but there are a few gems to sell and I'm just not sure how and/or to whom. Do you have any advice or suggestions to offer? Thanks for your insight.

Ski Trip Tips
From Raquel Catalano:  REPLY
I am seeking advice on booking a family ski vacation, including recommendations for a travel agent with this specialty. If you have had a great experience traveling to ski with young children, I would love to hear about it! Thank you.

A Dog's Life
From Maria Polenghi:  REPLY
I am hoping to find a loving foster home for our sweet tea cup toy Maltese until we permanently relocate to our new home, which is currently under construction. Our new landlord in our temporary apartment doesn't allow pets. If you are interested or know someone who is, I'd love to hear from you!

Report on Rip Currents
The recent tragedy at Ft. Lauderdale beach reminds us how important safety is at the shore. Team JAB spoke with Chief Breck Ballou of Fort Lauderdale Ocean Rescue, who explained that a combination of factors kept lifeguards up and down our coastlines unusually busy with rip current activity from Memorial Day and through the 4th of July weekend: rough seas, sunny skies, and several holidays increasing beach traffic. His number one tip for staying safe at the beach? Swim in front of a lifeguard, as the vast majority of incidents occur on unsupervised beaches. For more safety tips provided by
Fort Lauderdale Ocean Rescue, click HERE. For more information on rip currents, click HERE.

A Watchful Eye
From Katiuska Aguilera:  REPLY
I am expecting, and I would like recommendations for a baby monitor with WiFi capabilities. I am looking for a reliable device with two-way audio and an easy app for an iPhone and iPad. If you have such a monitor, I would love to hear from you. Thanks for the guidance!

Horse Sense
From Cecily Wernick:  REPLY
My 13-year-old daughter would like to take horseback riding lessons. We tried Ascot Farm in Miami, but would like to explore other options. Is there a place you recommend? We want a stable that strives for safety and excellence and is also a pleasant learning environment. We are willing to travel up to an hour from Coral Gables for lessons. Thanks for your suggestions!

May the Force Be With You
From Alice Gabrieloff Wieder:  REPLY
I would like to have R2-D2 make an appearance at my son's birthday party. Do you know where I can hire one?

Mac Attack
From Galia Pennekamp:  REPLY
Are you upgrading your Mac? I want to buy your old one! My children's schools are implementing an iPad program this fall and I think it's a good time to transition them from PC to Mac. If you have a working notebook/laptop, please let me know!

On the Run
From Ana Bustillos:  REPLY
I am interested in buying a jogging stroller. If you can recommend a stroller, please share your experience with me. Also, if you are selling a gently used stroller or know of a store where I should look, please contact me.
