I love Mother's Day. Instead of commemorating one big occasion, Mother's Day celebrates all the little things that moms do everyday, from packing lunches to wiping away tears to giving heartfelt advice. It is the mother of all holidays. I love Mother's Day not only because I am showered with homemade cards, flowers and presents from Paul and the girls, but because in our family, it's one of the most intimate and relaxing days of the year.
 |
Boo with her daughters Aly + Caroline
| For us, Mother's Day is always low key and we celebrate by enjoying the "little things." We gather our family, and we hang out somewhere quiet. We play cards. We swim. We read. We drink fruity afternoon cocktails. We play with the kids. Best of all, we just spend time together. It's a day of total leisure that is typically hard to come by, especially for a busy mother.
Enough about me. How will you spend Mother's Day? Whatever your plans are, and whichever type of celebration suits you best, I hope you will find some great ideas here in this edition of JustAskBoo Ft. Lauderdale. Most importantly, to all of you who are mothers, I hope your day is memorable and beautiful.
Happy Mother's Day and Happy JABBING!
- Boo

Does anyone know an appraiser or collector to help me determine the value, or who might be interested in purchasing the lot? I would also be willing to donate them for a tax deduction. Thanks!

Mother Knows Best
From Team JAB
JABBERS, we asked you what words of wisdom your mom passed along to you. We received some incredible responses! It's true; mothers do always seem to know what's best. Nancy McLeod Sabia says, "My mother is 99½ and is still as bright, spunky and wise as ever! When I was a youngster, I was too tall, too gangly, too clumsy, and too red-headed. So, my mother played a "game" with me: I could trade all my traits with any person that I saw or knew - with the caveat that I had to trade EVERY trait with the person I selected. She knew what she was doing - I never did trade my traits with any other person I saw or knew. It made me appreciate me for who I was, and am." Boo Zamek says, "My mom always told me to do something nice for someone every day, and listen more than you speak." Mindy Zeitlin says, "My mother worked for a divorce attorney, and she taught us to never have compromising pictures taken, the kind we wouldn't want a court full of people to see. I learned this lesson 20 years before YouTube and Facebook ~ it's even more valuable today!" Nancy Wynne Hoffman says, "There are two things that stand out when I think of advice my mother has given me: 'If you can read, you can do anything; and there are two things you can give your children: roots and wings.' I cannot tell you how many times I think about both of those as I go about my daily life." AJ Grossman's mother says, "If you have nothing nice to say, don't say it. "

Balancing Act
From Team JAB
We know how challenging it is to strike the perfect balance between one's professional and personal life, which is why we want to congratulate JAB advisory board member, Mike Tomas. The American Diabetes Association's Father's Day Council is honoring Mike with a "Father of the Year" Award on June 7, which recognizes "fathers who have demonstrated the ability to balance their personal lives, to serve as a role model for their children, and to help make a positive difference in their community." This honor is particularly exceptional given Mike's considerable professional accomplishments. He is CEO of Bioheart and President of the ASTRI group and is a highly regarded IT/telecom and biotech insider, entrepreneur and investor. He is the chairman of FIU's Global Entrepreneurship Center, serves on several business and community boards and is a Miami-Dade County Sports Commissioner. Congratulations on this well-deserved honor, Mike! If you would like to donate to the American Diabetes Association in Mike's honor, please click HERE.

(Un)happy Meal I am very concerned that my four-year-old refuses to eat anything. I have tried everything from disguising the food to bribing him, and nothing works. My pediatrician has no advice to offer except to be patient. I know that he does not have a problem with food textures, and I don't know what else it could be! If you have experience with this or can recommend someone I can consult about this issue, I would love to hear from you. Thanks!

Learn to Swim in Five Days, Guaranteed Results! As a parent, I know it's scary to think about your child around a pool when they can't swim. But as a swim instructor with over 30 years experience, I know just what it takes to teach them. I guarantee that your little one will learn to swim in five lessons - or you can return for free. In the heated pool at Westminster Academy, I offer group lessons with a 5-to-1 student to teacher ratio, and private lessons at our pool or yours. JAB's Favorite Recipes
From Team JAB Is anything as precious as a child's homemade gift on Mother's Day? An excellent alternative to a macaroni necklace, this delicious, easy-to-follow recipe for gâteau à yaourt is a staple in French households, where children learn to bake from an early age. Using empty yogurt containers as measuring cups, little ones pour and mix like pâtissiers, requiring only enough adult supervision to keep us feeling needed (someone has to work the oven, after all.)
Ingredients
2 six-ounce containers plain whole-milk yogurt (use the empty containers to measure the other ingredients) 2 eggs 2 containers sugar (or just one, depending on how sweet you like it) 1 teaspoon vanilla Just under 1 container of vegetable oil 4 containers flour 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder Crème fraiche (optional)
Directions Preheat oven to 375 F. Use vegetable oil to grease a 9-inch round cake pan or loaf pan.
Gently combine the yogurt, eggs, sugar, vanilla, and oil. In a separate bowl, mix the flour and baking powder. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients; mix gently until the ingredients are just combined (don't overmix). You can add 2 containers frozen berries, a container of chocolate chips, or any flavoring you like. Bake for 35 minutes, then five minutes more if the cake doesn't pass the knife test. It should be almost crispy on the outside, but springy on the inside. Let it cool. The cake is delicious served with tea and a dollop of crème fraiche.
