CREATIVITY
4th in our series of suggestions for ways to kick-start, or to continue stimulating YOUR creative juices.

Did you know there is actually a Creative Process? While people describe the steps differently, there actually are steps you can follow when you want to create something new or different.

Here are the steps:
  1. Motivation.
You have a fire in your belly. You really want to create something new or do something differently.
  2. Preparation. Explore sources of new ideas, practice or learn new techniques. Gather your tools and materials.
  3. Incubation. Ruminate. Mull the idea over. Look at it from different directions.
  4. Illumination. Aha! Finally, a clear idea!
  5. Implementation. Take action. Do it.
Over the next few months we will explore each of these steps, giving you more encouragement and ideas for following your creative bliss.

Let us hear from you! What is your creative process? Where do you get stuck when you are trying to create something new or different? How do you get un-stuck? Share with us on Facebook, or send us an email.

If you have read our book Design Your Personal Hawaiian Quilt, these steps will sound familiar. We discuss the Creative Process in Chapter 3.

Pick Me! Pumpkins, short runner
Pick Me! Pumpkins pattern
With the holiday season fast approaching, many of us will be spending time around the table with our family and friends. I always love setting a beautiful table as just one way to make my guests feel special and important.

My family does not get together as often as we would like. Distance is our largest obstacle, so when we are together there is always incredible food and conversation. There really isn't anything much better. It always amazes me how quickly time passes while we are catching up, and it seems like all we do is eat and talk and eat some more.  Oh, and maybe we assemble a jigsaw puzzle or two while we chat. What are some of your favorite things to do when you gather for the holidays?

As my Thank You gift to you find the FREE
placemat pattern I designed so you can create a colorful table for your family and friends to enjoy this season.

October was an incredible month here at Pacific Rim Quilt Company! We are busy planning 2016 so please check our Calendar for details. We hope to see you in the New Year.

E komo mai,
Welcome,

A THANK YOU GIFT FROM ME TO YOU
FREE Holiday Pattern!

FREE Holiday Stars placemat pattern
To show my gratitude for your patronage and support this year I designed this simple placemat pattern for you. I plan to use these on my holiday table and thought you would enjoy them too! I will be using different colors for each placemat, but I see so many possibilities for embellishment and creative quilting on these. Let your imagination run wild!

I have chatted with many of you who love needleturn applique but I know some of you are intimidated by it. I designed this pattern with all of you in mind.

Whether you want something simple to practice your skills, or you want something quick to stitch by hand or machine this is it!  Each placemat can be made with just two fat quarters. The pattern can be printed on two 8" x 11" sheets of paper. I have made my placemats 13" x 16". You can make yours with fusible web by machine, or by hand with needleturn applique. Just follow the instructions in any 2 Fabric Applique Quilts pattern.

TIP: Find help with your pointy-points and valleys by clicking on these links to our past e-newsletters. Click this link to find our tips on machine applique.

Come Celebrate!

CANDLELIGHT: 2 Fabric Applique Quilts

Shine a Light on Your Holiday Season
  candlelight-blue-200
There are many different reasons why candles are associated with Christmas, although no one knows when they first became connected.
Candles were used during ancient winter solstice celebrations as a way of remembering that spring would soon arrive. One of the earliest records of candles being used at Christmas is from the middle ages, where a large candle was used to represent the star of Bethlehem. While candles were used as decorations on Christmas trees beginning in the 18th century, they were (thankfully) replaced after the invention of electricity with electric lights. Candles are also used during Hanukkah, the "Jewish Festival of Lights".

Candles represent Hope, Inspiration and Happiness. However you celebrate during this season we wish you health, happiness and a bright future.

Joyce's Quilt Story

We received this email and photo from a reader in response to last month's e-Newsletter. We were so impressed with her story and design that we are sharing it with you, too.

"A while back, I bought Design Your Personal Hawaiian Quilt Book. I thought I was buying a book about HOW to put a quilt together, not how to DESIGN a quilt. I almost returned it - how could I possibly design and make a quilt when I didn't even know how to put a basic quilt together?
Joyce Phillips
"Wave After Wave"
by Joyce Phillips
I decided to keep it - I was intrigued by the pages and so I watched the CD. It seemed so possible! And so Fun!! And I needed a project - my husband was beginning chemo and I knew I'd spend MANY hours by his side at clinics and hospitals, and on weekends. I asked him his favorite things about Hawaii - a special place we travel to whenever we can. He said turtles, whales, and dolphins. So I designed this quilt and began it. The nurses all wanted to see what I was doing and I was fortunate to have the nurse in charge be an avid Hawaiian quilter as well. She loved checking in on my progress!"

"Well, my husband finished chemo (and is doing great!!!) long before I finished the quilt. I also work full time and was in grad school! I was so pleased to present this quilt to him last Christmas. And, now that I have graduated, I will have to start my King size Hawaiian quilt for our bed - because I've already designed a lovely hibiscus pattern."

"Mahalo for making something that seemed impossible so incredibly fun and totally do-able!!"
Joyce Phillips

Joyce, thank you for sharing this incredible story with us. You are SuperWoman in my book! I love hearing about inspirational people and how they handle what life has handed them and your story will be one we will all remember and draw from when time's are tough!  Thank you again!
Inspiration. We invite you again to see the quilts people just like you have designed using our book and DVD set, Design Your Personal Hawaiian Quilt. Visit the Gallery - Design on our website. You will be impressed and encouraged to know that you too can design your personal Hawaiian quilt!

Washington State Quilt Show

Didn't know there were T-Rexs
in Eastern Washington
Last month Nancy and I had a booth at the Washington State Quilt Show in Spokane. I enjoyed sharing photos along the way with you on Facebook. I love taking photos. So much so that my children were always thankful when I forgot the camera!

It was a very exciting couple of days in Spokane. We were able to meet many of you whom we have chatted with on the phone or corresponded with through email. We always love catching up and sharing stories in person.  Thank you for making this a fun and successful show.

As I travel for Pacific Rim Quilt Company I love to take photos of the places I see. Here are a couple of fun photos I took as I headed south from Spokane. On my way to the show I spotted these lovely cows in the boat going for a ride. I decided on my way home to stop and take photos when I would have more time. Now, for those of you who have never been to Eastern Washington, it is farm country. Some places there are wheat fields that seem to go on for miles, so when you see sights like this you just have to pull over and take a moment to enjoy! We all love things that make us smile!

The Girls Out for a Joy Ride...

Register NOW for classes. They can fill quickly, or be canceled if not enough people register in advance.

Schedule Nancy now for your show or event in 2016, 2017 and beyond. If you would like her to come to your area to teach, let your quilt shop, quilt guild, or show organizer know. Print Nancy's Brochure and pass it along.

Piggy-backing is good!
Nancy is always eager to teach or speak at more than one location when she travels. If she is able to book multiple events, then each group shares in her travel expenses. So it is really an economical and efficient way to book. If you see that Nancy will be anywhere near* you, then contact her to see if additional engagements can be arranged during the same trip. That way EVERYONE WINS!

*Remember, Nancy is traveling from Washington State. So near means that if she will be in Virginia even Florida is near. Think regionally.

Thank you for spending a little of your precious time with us, we really appreciate it. Remember to send us your stories, pictures, questions, or suggestions. We love hearing from you.

A hui hou,
Until next time,

 Connie & Nancy
