NANCY IS MOVING
| |
Northward Bound
After enjoying eight years living on the gorgeous Oregon coast, it is time for Nancy and her husband to return to the Seattle area to be closer to family and a major airport.
They have a buyer for their house, and expect to have re-located by early October. They are hoping to find their next house in Snohomish County.
Nancy is looking forward to finding new teaching opportunities in the Western Washington quilt shops. Let your favorite quilt shop know Nancy is returning, and that you would like to take a class from her.

CREATIVITY
| |
Over the next several months we plan to give you lots of suggestions for ways to kick-start, or to continue stimulating YOUR creative juices.
Discontinuity is good for creativity. The more often you experience something in the same way, the more predictable it becomes and the less you think about it. Habit, routine, clich, stereotype. Mixing things up a bit makes your mind see things in new ways.
Introduce these interruptions into your routine and see if it sparks your creativity anew:

- Drive different routes to familiar places
- Listen to different radio stations
- Shop at different stores
- Make new friends
- Try new recipes
- Subscribe to a new genre of magazine
Use our Facebook page to share ways you vary your routine to stimulate creativity, or just add more joy to your life!
We'll share some of the ideas we get in future e-newsletters, too.

I HAVE A NOTION
| |
Introducing you to the notions Connie and Nancy use.
Applique Pins
How do we love thee? Let us count the ways:
- Holds small applique pieces in place long enough to get them stitched, instead of basting.
- Only 3/4" long so don't catch the applique thread.
- The shaft is thick enough to hold the pin in place.
- The point is very sharp and easily pierces fabric.
- Come in a handy little case that snaps shut, and stays shut.
- The white heads don't melt under an iron.
- $7.20 per box.

CUSTOMER QUESTION

Choosing a Hawaiian quilt pattern
Q: I want to make a special quilt for a friend who lives in Hawaii. What would be a good pattern to choose?
A: One of the things that makes Hawaiian quilts especially meaningful, is that the pattern is often chosen based on something very personal to the recipient of the quilt.
When you are considering a pattern for your friend, you can start by knowing which island they live on (or which is their favorite, or the one they were married on, etc.). Each island has a nickname, a flower and a color. Making a quilt that incorporates any of those elements adds meaning.
Another consideration is the person's favorite flower, or activity. A pattern which incorporates the person's favorites is always a good choice, in their favorite colors, of course.
On the Questions & Answers page on our website we give more specific information about the island flowers and colors, birth-month flowers, and other suggestions.
If you can't find just the right pattern, then consider designing a quilt yourself. It is not as hard as you might be imagining, and with the help of our book and DVD set Design Your Personal Hawaiian Quilt you can give your friend a truly one-of-a-kind gift from your heart.
Did you know? We answer this and many other questions about our patterns, videos and book, our website, and quilting in general on our Questions & Answers page. Check it out!

It has often been said that "Variety is the spice of life." We agree! How boring it would be if we all liked the same things, did things the same way, believed and behaved all the same. Yuck.
It is exactly because we all have such different tastes that we work so hard to bring you a large variety of quilt designs. We hope that with the four NEW PATTERNS we promised you last month and are introducing this month that you will find your next quilt project! Enjoy!
As we write this Nancy and I are surrounded by quilts at the Oregon Coastal Quilters Guild "Quilt by the Sea" show in Newport, Oregon. Creativity and inspiration are abundant in the variety of techniques, colors, and shapes that surround us. We are having a great time. It has been rewarding to have our new designs greeted with such enthusiasm! We love catching up with long-time friends again, and making new friends.
We hope when we are at a show near you, that you will come by and introduce yourself. Remember to watch our Calendar to see when Nancy will be teaching in your area, and to find where we will be vending at a quilt show near you! We hope to see you soon.
E komo mai,
Welcome,
Connie & Nancy

4 NEW PATTERNS - 2 Fabric Applique Quilts
As promised!
Last month we gave you advance notice that we would be introducing FOUR NEW 2 Fabric Applique Quilts patterns this month. And here they are! I am so very excited to share with you our newest additions.
Nancy created two of the new designs and I created two. Can you guess who did which ones? Of course, there is no prize for the right guess, just personal pride and satisfaction. Nothing wrong with that!
Over the past few weeks I have been sharing photos of small sections of the new patterns with visitors to our Facebook page as teasers. Building the suspense has been fun. We began selling the patterns this weekend at the quilt show in Newport, Oregon. Now you can all see and buy the new patterns on our website.

DOGS and CATS: 2 Fabric Applique Quilts
|
|
Our furry friends
I am pleased to announce that we now have a Dog and a Cat in our line of 2 Fabric Applique Quilts patterns! Yes, the Dog and Cat designs belong to me, Connie. And I am so very excited to show you the first two of what will be many of my designs to come in the future.
First of all, I am a mom to two wonderful young adults. But they will tell you they have been replaced by my two furry kids: Butch the dog and Skittles the cat. Let me introduce you to Butch and Skittles, my inspiration for these two new patterns.
DOG AND DAISY
Butch is a Career Change dog from Guide Dogs for the Blind. Having raised three puppies for Guide Dogs, when we wanted a pet we applied for a dog that didn't make it as a guide, and we got Butch. Butch has been with us for 7 years and is by my side 95% of the time. So, it only seemed fitting that he would be my first model.
The idea of the daisies came from the third puppy I raised, Bronx. Bronx was quite a handful and the world was his to eat and taste. So while photographing him in a field of daisies and foxgloves one day he decided it was time to snack on the daisies. Since I needed an interesting setting for Butch in the quilt design I chose the daisies. While Bronx liked eating the daisies, Butch is more of a gentleman, so on the quilt he is just holding the daisy in his mouth.
CAT NAP
I also have a 16 year old calico cat who loves nothing more than to sleep in the backyard (or to pester Butch). The two of them are such close buddies that if he got a quilt design so should she! It was easy for me to imagine Butch sitting in the field of daisies with Skittles sleeping at his feet.
And now you know how Dog and Daisy and Cat Nap came to be. I hope you are as excited as I am about these new patterns and will have as much fun making them as I had designing them.
To get you started quickly on your quilts, here are Fabric Packs from which to choose.

CHRISTMAS TREE and KOI POND:
2 Fabric Applique Quilts
|
|
Nancy's stories
If you guessed that Nancy designed the Christmas Tree and Koi Pond quilts - you would be right! Here are Nancy's stories about these two quilt designs.
CHRISTMAS TREE
I began designing this Christmas tree back in 2009, when I created a very small version for a guild block challenge. You can see a similar version in our December e-newsletter. I stared at that block on the wall for years, playing with various ideas to enlarge and improve it. Nothing worked for me until I returned to my original vision--adding more of everything to fill the space available for our 24" x 36" 2FAQ format.
Connie suggested I try a pointed roof over the top of the tree--and that was exactly what it needed! TA DA!! Here is our Christmas Tree with all of its trimmings. I love it! And we hope you do too!
KOI POND
There is nothing quite so peaceful as sitting beside a pond, watching koi with their lovely long fins and tail. When we moved to Gold Beach, Oregon, the house we purchased had a koi pond. When sitting next to it I experienced a relaxation I'd only known before when appliqueing.
Even if you can't have a real koi pond, it is thought that displaying koi art in your home can bring abundance, prosperity, harmony and happiness. Who can't use more of all that?!
Now that we are moving back to the Seattle area (yes, it is official, my husband and I are moving back), I wanted a reminder in fabric of my koi pond (with nary a thought any longer about water level, chemistry, and who will feed them when we travel). I originally designed this pattern just for me; now I dedicate it to Rita Rose, my friend and koi babysitter; and you can have a carefree koi pond, too!
Who will be first to post their appliqued top, or finished quilt (!) from one of our new designs on our Facebook page? We all want to see your quilt! You say you're not on Facebook? No problem, you can view our page even if you are not a member of Facebook. You can also see others' photos in the Gallery page on our website, and send us your photo via e-mail to post in the Gallery.

CROWNING GLORY - Applique Quilt Borders & Table Runners
What's your pleasure?
Not only do quilters have a variety of tastes, we also vary in our technique preferences. What some of you love about applique is choosing fabrics, cutting, and stitching different fabrics for every shape in your applique projects. Others love the simplicity of cutting a design from a single fabric, basting and stitching it down.
Did you know that you can make our Crowning Glory pattern either way?! While the instructions with the pattern describe cutting the shapes from different fabrics, it is really very easy to do this pattern following the instructions from our 2FAQ patterns, like this one:
Nancy appliqued this Crowning Glory from one piece of dark green applique fabric, following the instructions we use for our 2 Fabric Applique Quilts. For this method you will need one piece of fabric 13" x 70" to cut the applique.
This red version was made using a variety of red fabrics, each individually selected, cut and stitched, as described in the Crowning Glory instructions. The fabric requirements are on the back of the pattern and here: Fabric Requirements (Option B).
Crowning Glory, 24" x 36". Normally this pattern sells for $12.00 For a limited time it is the Internet Special for just $10.00. Buy yours now.

Piggy-backing is good!
Nancy is always eager to teach or speak at more than one location when she travels. If she is able to book multiple events, then each group shares in her travel expenses. So it is really an economical and efficient way to book. If you see that Nancy will be anywhere near* you, then contact her to see if additional engagements can be arranged during the same trip. That way EVERYONE WINS!
*Remember, Nancy is traveling from Washington. So near means that if she will be in Virginia even Florida is near. Think regionally.
