READER QUESTION
| |
Q: What is the best way to transfer the pattern lines for a 2FAQ quilt onto
dark fabric?
A: Use our Pattern Transfer Paper, of course! To make a 2 Fabric Applique Quilt (2FAQ), you trace the entire pattern onto the right side of your applique (top) fabric before basting it to the background fabric. After that you will cut on all the traced lines, then applique. When your applique fabric is so dark you cannot see the pattern lines, even with a light box, the best thing to do is to trace the lines using our Pattern Transfer Paper (PTP). This works very well with any fabric, not just dark fabrics. Yes, complete instructions come in the package. The 18" x 24" sheets are large enough to mark one half of a 2FAQ quilt, then just slide the PTP over to mark the second half. You can choose from a single sheet in either blue, red, yellow, or white for $5.75. Or you can purchase one of each color in our Assorted pack for $20.00.
TIP: Some people like to tape 2 sheets together to mark the whole quilt. The sheets don't even have to be the same color! The quick, easy, safe way to transfer pattern lines to fabric!

Aloha!
 | Sailing on Puget Sound |
Seattle is best known for its rainy weather. Oddly, the city of Seattle only receives about 37 inches of rain a year, it just
takes 155 days to accumulate that much. Many locations in
Western Washington tally much higher rain totals (like at Janice's house). Of the twelve wettest spots on the mainland US (ranging from 105" to 130"), nine are in Washington - the other three are in Oregon (close to Nancy's house). And we find it interesting that many US cities get much more annual rainfall than Seattle, like Pensacola FL (64"), New York City (50"), Houston TX (48"), and Boston MA (43")...but whose counting?
If you live in the Northwest, you know that "Summer begins on July 5th", because it usually rains right up through the fireworks on July 4th. You also know that July and August are seriously sunny and dry. So, true to form, we are enjoying our sunniest days of the year right now. And it is glorious.
If you are making plans to visit Western Washington in August to revel in our sunshine, or if you live here, you will find Nancy teaching at several shops in Western Washington (Aug 7-11), with a stop in Portland, OR, (Aug 12-13) on her way back home. More classes and details are on the Calendar page of our website.
Wherever your summer activities take you, be safe, stay dry, be cool, and have fun!
E komo mai,
Welcome,
Nancy & Janice

TROPICAL FRUIT & NUT - Hawaiian Quilt Blocks
| |
Summer fresh
 |
Top row: Ohelo Berry, Macadamia Nut
Middle row: Pineapple & Coconut, Lilikoi
Bottom row: Lychee, Mokihana
|
As sure as the rain will fall again in Seattle, the warm summer sunshine brings an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables to our local markets. There is nothing better than fresh local strawberries on the day they are picked! Or fresh-frozen fruit blended into a cold smoothie on a hot summer evening.
This quilt will remind you year-round of the amazing beauty and flavor of tropical fruits and nuts. Macadamia nut chocolates or butter, pineapple and coconut pina coladas, pineapple upside-down cake, lilikoi jam. Yum!
Do we need to remind you that with blocks like these you can use all six to make a quilt approximately 42" x 63" (larger if you add sashing or borders). You can use three blocks for a tablerunner (see quilt at left). You can applique one design on a tote bag, or garment. How about pillows for your couch or bed? You can also use these blocks surrounding one of our wall quilts to make a bed-sized quilt.
TIP: For pictures of quilts using Hawaiian quilt blocks in a variety of creative ways visit our Gallery of Hawaiian Quilts. New quilt photos have been added!
Tropical Fruit & Nut: six 21" block patterns. Normally $12.00, for a short time this pattern is our Internet Special for only $10.00.
Read more about our inspiration for the Tropical Fruit & Nut pattern in the November 2011 edition of our e-Newsletter. Did you know? You can find the Fabric Requirements for all of our patterns on our website. With this information you can order the fabric of your choice and the pattern, at the same time. |
JANICE'S FRUIT SMOOTHIE RECIPE
| |
Make your Summer Cooler
Hankering a rich, healthy, delicious smoothie? Here is Janice's quick, easy recipe:
JANICE'S SMOOTHIE RECIPE
- 1 - 6 ounce carton yogurt (Tillamook Vanilla Bean is perfect, but any brand or flavor will do)
- 1 banana
- 1 cup or more of any frozen fruit (mangos, blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, raspberries, peaches)
- a splash of milk (dairy, soy, almond - your choice)
- a sprinkle of sugar, if desired, to taste
Put all the ingredients in a blender and pulse until the frozen fruit is completely blended with everything else. Pour into frozen mugs, and enjoy your summer cooler. Makes enough to fill two or three mugs.

SAILBOAT & LIGHTHOUSE - 2 Fabric Applique Quilt
| |
A new bonus
Nothing says summer like sunshine and fun on the water. Whether you live near the water, or wish you did, this quilt will bring to mind the carefree days of summer vacations.
We love receiving pictures of the quilts you make using our patterns. As quilt designers, we especially like when someone starts with one of our patterns, then takes it someplace new, adding their personal touch. About two months ago we received such a photo from Melinda Sword.
In her email she said, "My first Sailboat (quilt) went to live with a friend in Michigan. So I made another for myself :-)
 | Sailboat & Lighthouse, with seagulls |
& I added a couple of seagulls to this one." We were so impressed with the addition of the seagulls that we asked Melinda for permission to share them. She graciously agreed, and sent us the drawing of her seagulls. We have turned them into a free pattern add-on, available on the How-to and Ideas page on our website.
The instructions with the seagulls tells you how to add them to your paper pattern, or if you have already made the quilt, how to add them to a finished quilt. We love the life and movement this adds to the quilt, and we think you will too. Thank you, Melinda, for sharing your creative addition with us all.
Sailboat & Lighthouse: 24" x 36" pattern, $12.00.
