WE HAVE A WINNER!

Beam N Read Personal Light

Last month we announced that if you told us who you would give a Beam N Read light to, and why, you would have a chance to win a light.

The winner of our random drawing is Linda B.  Here is what she said:

"If I win this light I would give it to my mother-in-law who is 89 years old. She has been my mother-in-law for almost 47 years and has macular degeneration. She no longer can quilt or do embroidery but I believe this light will help her to see things better."

And we are sure it will help her, too.  Congratulations, Linda and best wishes to your mother-in-law.

We were touched by many of the emails we received.  Between poor eyesight and poor lighting many people are struggling to see what they need to see.   Your compassion and consideration of others is heart-warming.

Thank you to everyone who shared their thoughtful wishes with us.  And thank you to ASF Lightware Solutions for sponsoring this give-away.  Visit their website for even more low-vision aids and to enter for a chance to win at other websites during November.

This handy little light hangs around your neck, is battery operated, and provides extra light just where you need it as you applique, read, or do other tasks requiring extra light.

A new, updated, model was just shipped to us!  Click here for more details and to buy yours now, $29.50.

PARTRIDGE & PEARS

2 Fabric Applique Quilt

A Partridge in a Pear Tree is the first gift in the poem "The 12 Days of Christmas".  A poem which many of us learned as a song.   The origin of the written poem dates back to 1780 Partridge - greenin England.  However, because the French red-legged partridge commonly perches in trees, and the English grey partridge typically does not, it is believed the poem originated earlier in France.

The poem may have been a memory game of the memories and forfeits type.  A leader says a verse, and all the players repeat the verse; the leader adds a line and each player must repeat the new line with all of the preceding ones.  The first person to make a mistake must forfeit, or pay a penalty.  Penalties were light, perhaps giving a kiss or sharing a sweet with the other players.*

Partridge - goldNancy designed this particular pattern to make a quilt that could be, but does not necessarily need to be, a Christmas holiday quilt.  Just by choosing different colors this quilt can be any bird in a tree, at any time of year!

Partridge & Pears, 24" x 36".  Normally this pattern sells for $12.00, for a limited time it is ON SALE for just $10.00.  Click here to get your pattern now.

We have a variety of Fabric Packs for you to make your Partridge & Pears quilt.  Click here to see them.

TROPICAL FRUIT & NUT

Hawaiian Quilt Bounty

Tropical Fruit & NutWhen we give thanks at this time of year we always celebrate the bounty of the fall harvest.  Although, the fruits and nuts in this Hawaiian pohopoho-style quilt are likely to bloom and present their bounty at varying times of the year.

Top row:  Ohelo Berry and Macadamia Nut

Middle row:  Pineapple & Coconut and Lilikoi

Bottom row:  Lychee and Mokihana

Being in the middle of the vast Pacific Ocean, Hawaii had a limited plant population when humans arrived.  Today we think of Hawaii as a lush, verdant island group with a huge variety of plants.  But most of those plants were brought to Hawaii aboard ships from all over the world.  Our quilt, Tropical Fruit & Nut, is a blend of endemic and introduced species.

 Lychee

Native to Hawaii are the Ohelo (Island of Hawaii) and Mokihana (Island of Kaua'i).  Macadamia is a native of Australia, Pineapple came to Hawaii from South America, as did the Lilikoi (or Passion Flower).  Even the Coconut Palm is believed to have been carried to the Hawaiian islands aboard voyaging Polynesian canoes.

On our last visit to Kaua'i, May 2010, we were thrilled to see this Lychee tree in full fruit on the grounds of the Grove Farm Homestead.  Introduced to Hawaii from southeast Asia, these are huge trees, with abundant, edible fruit.

TIP:  Use the individual blocks to make placemats and put two, three or four together for a tablerunner, or narrow wallhanging.

Of course, if you are brave, our patterns and fabric packs, or hand-dyed fabrics make great gifts, too!!

Gift Certificates always fit, never expire, and there are no fees.

TIP: Forward this email, using the green box at the left, to the Santas in your life (sweetheart, daughter, son, sister, brother, friend) and be surprised by what they select for you.  Or, print the list, mark what you need, or want, and let them do the rest!
