CYCLING, GOLFING & MORE!
ISSUE #19
Greetings!

It's summer, and a great time to enjoy a plethora of outdoor recreational activities. Certain sports, however, can worsen existing muscle imbalances in dental professionals.  Not to worry....you can still participate in and enjoy the activities you love by making some small ergonomic modifications and performing a few correctional exercises.

Enjoy the summer, and stay well,
Bethany Valachi, PT, MS, CEAS
Dental Ergonomic Consultant/Lecturer/Physical therapist
BICYCLING IN GOOD HEALTH
Biking Hit the road this summer....pain-free!!

What do dental professionals and cyclists have in common?  30 - 70% of them report neck, mid or low back pain!  Since cycling places demands on some of the same muscles that are prone to tightness & pain in dentistry, cyclists who work in dentistry can be far more predisposed to pain while biking than the general public.  Fortunately, with a few ergonomic modifications and specific exercises, you can continue the sport you love....in comfort!!

FEATURED EXERCISE VIDEO
The 'Pointer Dog'
Pointer Dog

I was once on a scuba diving trip and conversing with a dentist on the boat.  Of course, I had to ask him, "Do you ever experience pain when you practice?"  His response was an emphatic  "No.  Ever since I was in dental school, I've done the Pointer Dog exercise every day.  I've never had pain."    I smiled, as this confirmed my physical therapy knowledge of the importance of this exercise to the discipline of dentistry.  It targets more essential stabilizers in one exercise than any other exercise I know of.   Remember, the slower you perform this exercise, the more specific you make it to your occupation.
